Podcat confirmed that the game no longer has a Hard End Date, which has me thinking about Two things related to the game after WW2.
- you get a score screen 1948, but you can keep playing. I'v run a game to 1997 ;D

Both can be modded in but I would like to see official DLC for them.

1. Events and Decisions (Maybe even National Focuses) related to the wars after WW2 like Korea and Vietnam.
2. Expanded Tech Trees for the years after WW2 (Which may even be included in the above mentioned)

I'm excited for extended game even at Launch since it means not only do I have to think about getting through WW2 but also plans for running my country after, if Germany survives WW2 maybe I can use the post war years to rebuild and try again :p

Any one else excited for the possibilities of post '48 gameplay? (Mods or DLC)

Well,if someone makes a mod that covers atleast tech trees from 1948-2000(or around there) I would try it. And it would give time for some not so obvious scenarious to happen as you would have time to spare. Also it would give a change to play Third world war/Cold war(but you know how those heat up) scenarious without being stopped after 3 years.

All in all I really like the idea of not having Hard End Date.It would just feel dissapointing to have to stop there while game could be going fine.

The branching futures multiply enormously, particularly shaped by the nature and outcome of the conflicts during the intended timeframe. That is enormous work and responsibility, and one safest borne by modders and they bear the criticisms.

I'd say the biggest difficulty that will impact mods that go much past 1948 will be the impact of tech on the gameplay mechanics. Things like surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles change how air combat works, and long-range anti-ship missiles have a substantial impact on naval combat as well that will be tricky to shoehorn into combat resolution mechanics designed for guns, torpedoes, cannon and rockets. Same for the impact of radar, and the scanning/jamming/stealth competition that went on once it became a thing and cold war ASW.

Could still be cool, mind, and the lack of a hard end date leaves the game far more open for post-1948 DLC that might be able to help address this.

i love a soft end date (though the game over screen should be put off if WWII hasn't ended yet) it'll be interesting to see how a completely undefined cold war era will go. i remember how with HOI 3, it was just an endless buildup to the point that every country had titanic militaries and perma-tanked their economies.

yo @podcat, how'd the aforementioned 1997 run go? anything interesting? or was it too early in development for AIs?

I am pretty sure that there will be mods expanding the game in both ways. There is the pretty much unavoidable WW1 mod of course and i am sure that there will be plenty of mods extending the gameplay even further.

There is plenty of interesting scenarios and possibilities for mods i can think of right now. I am sure, or atleast hope, that the BlackICE guys are already eager to start working on it. :D

In my opinion everything related after 1948 which is too specific like the cold war, Vietnam and Korea doesn't make sense. This would only fit if WW2 Ends exactly like it did historically and to be honest, how often will this happen?

What would you do with cold war if Germany or Japan wins the war in 1945 or whenever? Or if Sovietunion looses and USA wins? Or the opposite?

I'd say because ships and planes are handled by regions and not by provinces in HoI4, one of the major problems of technological advanced post-WWII warfare is solved (shooting each other with missiles from tens of kilometres, only barely every having direct contact). You don't have problems with artificially short missile ranges, as all happens in very big regions anyway. So it will all be about Radar and Stealth and if you notice your enemy first, he will most likely be dead first, just like in reality. I don't really know much about Soviet or NATO attack plans in Europe, but the ground warfare in this era shouldn't differ too much from WW2.

I don't see why it couldn't work. It's mostly that all elements of the armies should get much...MUCH more expensive (in terms of production and supplies). And a lot better of course. This will leading to smaller but more powefull armies. Missiles and nukes will get more powerful and ranges of naval and airwarfare will increase.

As for a cold war kind of situation there already is a system in place in the form of world tension. The thing that's missing is espionage, covert ops and deception. I see a bright future for a DLC that covers those elements. You can do a lot with tech making all that stuff much better that's fun I think.

Keep in mind air combat is designed to be 1v1 or 2v1 at most, and based around a dogfighting approach. Once things had progressed to air-to-air missiles, it was often the side that had the longer-range missiles that won, and engagements could be much broader. HoI could handle unguided rockets I reckon, but doing 1v1 or 2v1 guided air-to-air missile warfare could get wonky pretty quick. I'm not suggesting it can't be shoehorned in, but that it'll be a 'best we can do with the mechanics' and would become moreso as the missiles got longer and longer ranged.

well, you can add enough branches in the NF tree to cover atleast some possibilities. For example, Germany and Japan getting in each others way with their imperial ambitions. Or the USA striking at the Soviet Union or vise versa.

As for a cold war kind of situation there already is a system in place in the form of world tension. The thing that's missing is espionage, covert ops and deception. I see a bright future for a DLC that covers those elements. You can do a lot with tech making all that stuff much better that's fun I think.
By 1960, you'd have enough armor and weapons to blanket Europe in them, and every single province in the world would be built up to it's maximum IC.

Not if the costs increase so much that it wouldn't be possible to sustain so much armour and/or troops. You do have a point concerning IC, however I think it could be solved by tech. The biggest problem however is population growth and urbanisation of remote areas. It's not an issue for a 10-15 year timespan but it will be for 20-30+ years.

IC for production, resources, supply demand and/or production. Also production times. I thought that was obvious. Basically IC costs...
There's no ongoing cost, so if all you did was make things more expensive, then you'd still have ridiculous stockpiles 10-15 years into the game. The production model of HoI works because war breaks out 2-3 years into the game, so things like money and civil rights (with regards to the ownership of property) aren't exactly important. The opposite is true of a cold war game - ownership of factories and money is incredibly important.

There's a reason the game ended in 1948. You can't expect a World War Two simulator to accurately model the Cold War, just like you can't expect EU4 to accurately depict modern day :D

One obvious problem is buried in the NF mechanic (which i do like!). The trees would have to be prolonged far into the future. Based on the basic time to get one (70 days IIRC), one could simply concentrate on one branch to get something really powerful fairly fast. Also the NFs chosen along might not fit to anything of the actual timeframe or the course of events on the map...

Well, you have a point here. But i think that HoI 4 is definitely no ww2 simulator.
/sarcasm on
PDox translated UKs invulnerability to SUB warfare of previous HoIs into making it absolutely self sustainant. Resources are absolutely not necessary to keep an island empire producing serious amounts of war materiel. We have also learned in the early WWWs that it's a no-brainer to industrialize the Egyptian deserts, making the Atlantic war the most nonsensible campaign in human history.
Lastly - and definitely not to be forgotten - even British ships cannot sail for any longer than 13 years without any cost. Thus the game is supposed to end then.
