Not a history buff. Hate mirror matches.Three reasons:
1) I like asymmetrical balance. I like that the axis and allies are balanced off againt each other. It creates more interesting play. When the other guy's strength is your strenght, and the other guy's weakenss is your weakness, it's not very interesting IMO.
That's a valid argument against same division vs same division, but not things like Luftlande vs 17 Panzer. Sure, you can end up with the exact same unit fighting the exact same unit on a rare occurrence (seriously look how many identical units divisions share), but is that really a problem? I mean, panzer 335 vs panzer 335 isn't notably different than Panzer 335 vs Stuart.
3) There's just no need for it. The only case where it's useful is if one factions best deck is quite a bit better than the other factions best deck when looked at over the breadth of the 15 maps. The maps are very different, people have different playstles, I doubt we'll come to a "best deck" across all of them.
There absolutely is, and it has nothing to do with the competitive aspect. No mirror matches means you don't get to play as an axis division and experience fighting against cannon planes, flak 88, nebelwerfers, Panthers, Panzerschrecks, pak 88s... nor can you play an allied division and need to face massed .50 cals, jumbos, cromwells, Avres... That is fun being missed out on.
How do I deal with a Luftlande player using lots of Hs 129 as the 12 SS? How do I deal with an early game Avre as the 101st? How do I deal with a bunch of command stuarts as the 6th airborne? There are a ton of interesting interactions that people will not get to experience with mirror matches disabled.
It's giving up half of the game just because Pz4 vs Pz4 doesn't feel right.
