My first go at an AAR for a loooong time. Only third started game with HOI2 (never played HOI) so experienced players might see some strange decisions made in this game.. anyway it's been going ok so far.

Any questions, comments etc. pls feel free to post.

The Pericles Dossier: An Argentinian AAR.

Rio de Janeiro, Ultimo July 1942:

The old leather covering the seemingly comfy office chair protested loudly as the large bulk of Mr Filinto Muller forced itself into the seat.

His left hand was nervously fidgeting his horn rimmed spectacles, his right about to crush the handset of the desk telephone it was enthusiasticly gripping.

Muller’s imposing head rapidly bobbed up and down as he heard the news from the other end of the line. He was grinning madly at what he heard.

If someone was to walk into the office of Brazil’s Minister of Intelligence this afternoon one look at the Minister would probably have elicited questions on whether he had won big in the state lottery, or perhaps become a happy grand father on this very afternoon, or maybe even whether he had a new mistres lined up for the coming evening.

Not that many just walked into this office.. Mr Muller didn’t encourage visitors.

- “Are you sure?” He croaked into the battered headset. “Bastards! He bloody did it, didn’t he!.. I never would have dared ho.. is P. OK by the way? Aha.. I’ll have my people take care of his return at once. Hmm..yes, yes.. sure.. and congratulations to you as well Colonel!”

He hung off the phone and leaned back to renewed protests from the chair. P. had to be rewarded of course.. but how? 6 years of active duty.. Brazil’s tiny intelligence community had never known such an agent.

His eyes fell on Pericles’ dossier which lay open on his desk. The clear type write from Crypto filled the reports, dilligently de-coded over all these years.

Those pompous Argentinians never even saw it coming! Muller laughed quietly to himself as he picked up the earliest report.

Have made contact with local operative. Safe location set up by GH will do nicely. Expect to start digging shortly.

Following occupation of Asuncion First army expected to mop up remaining Par forces. Intercepted docs from MoD to State Dept confirms annexation of Paraguay is imminent.

Arg State Dept ignores Chilean protests to border build-up. Spokesperson labels them ‘paranoid ramblings of socialist vermin’. Chilean ambassador departs BA in protest.

Very interesting AAR so far :)

BTW, did you mean that US cancelled a trade deal with you after you annexed Uruguay? I wonder if the two events might have been connected somehow.
 
Catching, let's see how you handle the Andes crossing.

It's interesting to see how does the Chilenean AI behaves. In HOI 1 they would concentrate all their forces in Santiago and the Northemost province (their only two VPs provinces) to stop an anexation/puppeting but with the new diplomatic system now they seek to avoid a tragic peace deal...

I don't think the two were related. The AI seems reconsider its ongoing deals hour by hour. (Which can be annoying as they offer, cancel, offer, cancel very frequently.) My early industry would be bleeding without US resources though, so I shouldn't complain, but I much prefer the one-time deals to the agreements.

(BTW: Since you're Argentinian, do you know who/what the Estaban de Luca research team was historically. All I can find googling is a poet by the same name.. but I doubt its based on him! :D )

As Control no doubt is aware Arg now at war with Chile.

One new cavalry division has reportedly been dispatched to S Arg to aid with war effort.

NOTE: Arg Cav forces believed to be under massive reorganisation.
(Early Cavalry Division researched)

Fighting reported along full Arg-Chilean border. Arg forces have seized Antofagasta and Santiago is under heavy attack by First army.

According to General Staff member one Arg mountain corps was dislogded from its position at San Carlos de Bariloche and have been forced to retreat.

ADDITIONAL ARMY MOVEMENT NOTES FOR END OF PERIOD (MID to END DEC):

First Army heading S after fall of Santiago, Puerto Montt expected to be hit soon.

Chilean forces unsucessfully try to break through Arg lines at Sarmiento. Arg forces preparing for counterattack in region.

National Radio has interview with new Garrison Commander at Antofagasta who proudly tells reporters he shall stay vigilant and protect Arg interests there for as long as God intends it.

Newly acquired reports from MoD suggests all Arg garrison troops are to be attached Police units and that the Minister of Security has insisted on having one in each occupied territory.

Arg election results have put radical leader Ortiz in power, General Justo has stepped down peacefully. Ref questions from State dept in latest transmission:

- It is not believed that this will have any change in the conduct of the Chilean war. Ortiz have stated his full and unwavering support for the armed forces.
- Ortiz’ administration not expected to make any advances to our Gov’t. Brazil not on President’s agenda at this time.


Intercepted reports from the front confirms Puerto Montt now firmly in the control of First army which is set to continue S soon. San Carlos de Bariloche retaken by Arg mountain troops supported by other frontside divisions.
Chilean defence forces said to be in chaos. Reports indicate they are out of supplies and that org levels are at a minimum. President Ortiz assures public war to be over soon.

My source at MoD has shared documents with me confirming Esteban de Luca have completed further improvements in Cavalry warfare.

Same docs reports artillery, armoured car and engineering brigades are being trained to complement armies in the field.

My friend at MoD is getting uneasy. Might have to terminate relationship soon unless we can find additional ways to put pressure on this man. Nevertheless, last meeting reveals Puerto Aisen now fallen to elements of First army.

Heavy fighting reported on Arg border to Santa Cruz, Arg cav. Forces said to be crossing the border.

Garrison troops have arrived in Santiago.

State Dept. ignores Chilean peace proposals. Talks of ‘Pacific Argentina’ very chic in Gov’t circles although no official news yet on Arg plans for conclusion of war.

Bulk of Arg forces now dug in along Bolivian border. President Ortiz has declined invitation to visit La Paz to discuss situation. Bolivian General states publicly that he ‘doesn’t trust Argentinians further than he can throw them’ and calls upon nation to remember Arg aggression against Bolivia a century ago.

Official Arg response is ‘shock and dismay at such vile accuastions’. State dept recalls its ambassador from La Paz.

Dinner with MoD source brings news of massive reorganisation of Arg armies in the field. Pressured him to bring me full overview of situation and expect to have these in time for next report.

Esteban de Luca said to be completing their studies of increased efficiency of Cavalry divisions.

FOREIGN: Arg’s ambassador to the US has warned President of Arg-US relations at ‘all time low’. London Embassy confirms same with respects to Britain. State Dept instructed to pursue a standing policy of improving relations with US and the UK.

MoD source has handed over extensive information regarding compostion of Arg forces and positions. These sent Rio by regular arrangements.

Buenos Aires ablaze with talk of revenge against Bolivia, all indicators point to imminent outbreak of war.

Not Argentinian but from Spain, but I have googled a lil bit myself -with the language advantage- just to tell you I have discovered that one of the arsenals in Buenos Aires was created in the late XIXth Century by such a Esteban de Luca...and then the arsenal was given the Esteban de Luca name.

Something more on Esteban de Luca, he created, with the help of Domingo Matheu a light weapon factory, so it seems to make a bit of sense to have such a tech team under his name.

wasted/effective/base ICs

Base is simply the number of factories you have. Effective is the actual number of IC you generate after bonuses from tech. ministers, and sliders are taken into account.

The bland furniture of the waiting room did nothing to soothe Muller’s rising temper. Thirty minutes of waiting! The President had a strange way of treating his closest associates.

Muller paced up and down the small, windowless room, seemingly unable to find peace. In one of his large hands, which were both folded behind his back, he held the report he was supposed to have started discussing with the President half an hour ago. Even before the boredom of waiting had taken its toll and led to him reading it four more times he knew the content by heart:

ON EXPANSIONIST POLICIES OF ARGENTINA
TO: Office of President Vargas – For the President’s personal attention.
From: Intelligence Services

Further to earlier reports on same subject it’s this office’s firm belief that Argentina’s belligerent actions over the last two years are forming a standing policy of aggression and warfare.

The attached details (see annex I through XII) points to a growing interest and fascination with conquest, military success and national growth through war within the Argentinian Government.

Further, it’s this office’s firm belief that these growing tendencies will result in a conflict with our two nations and that Brazil should make preparations to counter such a development.

- “ If you would just let me finish Sir.. He also says to go ahead with alternative three immediately.”

Muller’s surprise didn’t show, but he could feel his heart beating faster and heat rising to his head.

- “ Sonofa..you sure kid? You sure he said alternative three?”
- “ Oh yes Sir, he was quite specific about it.”

Maybe the old bastard had some balls after all Muller thought to himself. Smirking, he sent the clerk to get his car ready, put on his hat and left the room in a much better mood than he had entered it.

Following an earlier visit to Europe Armaments Minister said to be fascinated with tanks and have instructed the Esteban de Luca Arsenal to perform longtime studies of tank construction.

Peru’s sudden change in government not well received in BA. Ortiz said to ‘not allow anti-Argentinian reactionaries to occupy the Peruvian Government’. This could be the excuse they have been waiting for.

All arg offensive forces now on Peruvian border.

Air Force proudly unveiled new interceptors, the FMA LAe22-DL, at BA air show this month.
