Last Straw

The following is an excerpt from An Oral History of the Great World War: 1940-1980

EjR23sz.jpg

Major General James L. Day

"We absolutely knew what the communists were doing. For what other reason would they want those islands than for when they would inevitably declare war on us? They thought they were being sneaky about it, that we were buying their excuses. If we could've done something about it, we absolutely would've kicked their asses out of the Caribbean. But we couldn't. They had us outmanned and outgunned at every corner, with the Russians just east of Alaska, to the Canadians directly north of us, to German transport ships moving across the Atlantic, day in and day out. All we could do was gear up and hope to God that it was enough to hold the line. Congress made an effort in mid-June to get some allies. Jamaica declared independence on the 15th. On the 17th we got Guatemala to sign a treaty of mutual cooperation. It violated the agreement they signed when they took control of Belize, but Berlin didn't really seem to care, as there wasn't a single mention of it."

y94A0Rn.png
xhnbTRd.png

"We had been getting intel from some of our CIA boys in Berlin that some big and very sudden cabinet changes were being made by the German communist party. Foreign Minister Georg Derlinger and Minister of Security Arkadi Maslow were removed from their long time positions and they're duties taken over personally by Walter Ulbricht. We initially brushed it off as nonessential, but it would become very important later on, as those two men would never be seen again."

h7HyCTo.png
xmgxBuL.png

"The Antilles Naval Base had finished on the 16th. It's purpose being to 'protect Communist International interests in the region'. Those interests being the coast of Florida, of course. By August 4th, naval scouts were reporting a Comintern task force had garrisoned the island. English and German naval ships with French and German troops. But not just any troops. The full strength of the Spartakuskorps was reported to be on the island. Now, the official definition given to us of 'Communist International interests in the region' were the islands of St. Martin and Saba, which were currently in the hands of citizen militias. Civilians with rifles didn't exactly call for an army-sized contingent. When the news of that came in, Congress tried to ramp up the alliance efforts. They were willing to go so far as to renegotiate the lease on Guantanamo Bay with Cuba, but they weren't about to put themselves on the forefront of invasion. The socialist governments in Bolivia and Uruguay kept equal distance from us. The whole western hemisphere could clearly see what was about to go down, and they were all turning their heads and plugging their ears."

AKsYcPB.png
XOW3HkN.png

"Their Caribbean campaign began on the 6th of August. SK Leopard I MBT prototypes came ashore at St. Martin and unleashed themselves upon the unsuspecting populace. In ten days the island was subjected under the flag of the Soviet Union on the 16th. Intel on the 17th now reported that the Antilles Naval Base now housed English Special Air Service, GRU Spetsnaz, and French Commando Marines - not your usual type of soldiers."

FTyaSQT.png
z9JUqPb.png

"The German banner rose above Saba Island on the 22nd."

VvzYGFp.png

"We were sure that the taking of Saba Island would be the final step, and yet it wasn't. After that, everything just calmed down. Naval activity in the Caribbean began to slow down. The Navy would occasionally be brave enough to send a ship out into the Atlantic and spot a transport every so often on it's way to Nova Scotia. The same excuse was sent through neutral channels every time, that those were just advisors to oversee joint arctic training operations. It kept us on edge. The overworked factories in Detroit couldn't increase production anymore. Tanks and armaments were being put out as fast as possible. Drills were run 24/7. Command had predicted that Germany would do most of the heavy lifting like they always have. The US Army had more personnel than the German Army, and they were so far the only ones in the Comintern capable of being able to pull of an invasion. The size of their nuclear arsenal was unknown. They kept information of that caliber within the minds of a very select few, and attempting to reveal it was a good way to ensure that you and your family were never seen again. A conventional ground war could be winnable. September came along and the diplomatic channels fell silent. This lasted through October, November, December. The New Year 1961 came along and nothing was said. January came and left. We entered February and our seventh month at DEFCON 2. By March, the readiness level started to move down. Many of us were convinced that nothing was going to happen. At this point we all had big sighs of relief. That is, until the 12th. The day was progressing as normal, until the Pentagon got a frantic telegram from Korean Armed Forces Command. German helicopters were rapidly approaching the Yalu River. While sense of the situation was trying to be made, a second come from border troops in New York. German infantry had begun advancing over the St. Lawrence River under cover of artillery. Just as it began to sink in that we were under attack, coastal radar had picked up objects rapidly approaching the east coast and the air raid siren started. This entire time they were quietly moving troops into Canada, and now they were hitting us preemptively."

Hello friends! It has been a while since I have posted an update. That is due to a very unfortunate series of events which I will explain shortly. I am here to say that I never intended to abandon my AAR, and that I will be resuming very soon, and I hope that those of you who were following along will continue to due so.

Anyway, here's what happened. I'll try to keep it brief so as not to bore you. Back in March, we left off with the declaration of war against the United States. Gameplay wise, the invasion and post war events were complete, and I was busy going through picking and cropping the screenshots, and thinking up the narrative that would go with it. This process was almost done, when my laptop suddenly started acting up. I couldn't tell you what was wrong with it exactly, but I would boot it up, sign in, and then it would completely freeze, with a popup saying something was wrong with Windows. So I eventually had to just do a system restore on it, which solved the issue. However, in my infinite wisdom I didn't make any backups of the screens or the saves, which were lost when I had to system restore. Not even the ones I had uploaded to my OneDrive were there anymore. After much effort to see if I would be able to salvage the situation, I eventually just threw my hands up in defeat and had to acknowledge that it was over. Some time in late May or early June - whenever the Windows 10 release date was announced - I decided to finally replace my overheating graphics card, allowing me to play PC games again. More time passes and I decide to play some Darkest Hour. I load up vanilla and lo and behold - there were the old saves. I had completely forgotten I had them when I had to move over to the laptop. Unfortunately, they really were old saves. The most recent one was immediately after the Arab War had concluded. It took awhile to go back through the updates and place everything back exactly where it was before, but I was able to do it and am now ready to invade America all over again.

Then Paradox decides to go and redo the website. Unfortunately for me (yet again), I had forgotten my password, which, also unfortunately for me (yet again), the site didn't recognize my email, not allowing me to recover it. I thought this was just an error and would come back again occasionally and try again. It would turn out that it wasn't an error at all, the system really didn't recognize my email. So I ended up looking foolish when I made a new account and it asked if I was Moskva and would like merge. But the long and over complicated process is behind me now, and I'm here to start once again. If you'll have me, of course.

To Victory!

SK Leopard I in New England
The first moves of the new war were not by the Comintern, but by the United States. Clearly anticipating the action, an American B52 had already taken off from Japan, loaded with nuclear bombs. Their target: the Chinese city of Shanghai, which was promptly destroyed on March 12th. Very shortly after the Shanghai attack did German ICBMs carrying warheads reach their targets at Newark and Boston in the United States.

2RKEdJs.png
QdDAsti.png

The second wave of ICBMs arrived within the hour to lay waste to the cities of Baltimore, Chicago, and the capital of Washington D.C. The American government was now forced to move to nearby Philadelphia on the 15th. Meanwhile, German and Canadian troops began their advance into New England and Michigan, already taking northern Maine and western New York.

d2g6VrN.png
7ZF1oxd.png

The Americans responded by sending their own bomb to Beijing, destroying the Chinese capital on the 16th. On the 19th, the first wave of Army Group "Teutonic" (AG-T), composed of German, Dutch, and Belgian divisions, led by Marschall Jollasse, set up in Miami, Florida, to open the second front.

JzwCPjh.png
mt1wRPt.png

The American capital was force to move once again on the 22nd, when German bombers destroyed Philadelphia. On April 1st, a division of Army Group "Wiking" (AG-W) entered the ruins of Boston, ahead of the rest of the front along New York.

Zkp8nG4.png
ZA31I1z.png

The second wave of AG-T arrived in Orlando, while the first group in Miami had defeated the Americans in Tampa on the 2nd. On the 9th, Tampa and Knoxville were taken, while French and English reinforcements arrived in Miami.

GJJgHYN.png
sTdKsNM.png

On the 29th, a series of riots occurred in they city of Bayreuth, Germany. The bombings that were being carried out in the United States somehow made it's way out to the general populace. Bayreuth in particular was strong in the Nazi ideology in the decade prior to the election the brought the KPD into power in 1933. A group calling itself the Braunhemd Armee took the opportunity to stir up outrage within the people of Bayreuth against the party and incited rioting. Crowds took to the streets to call for an end to the war and the destruction. While some were simply following the Brownshirt agitation, many were genuinely tired of watching Germans sent to die on foreign soil and used the moment to vent their frustrations. In China, the Korean front had made sizable gains into Manchuria. The Chinese were not handling the situation well, while Soviet divisions in Vladivostok gave very minuscule, if any, assistance.

zHXWpHh.png
eI7YHAb.png

On the New England front, German armor had taken Newark, cutting off New York City and allowing the main force out of Hartford to attack and eliminate the troops within it on May 1st. On the 6th, a bomber division dropped another bomb on Milwaukee to further damage the United State's industrial capacity, just ahead of the advance into Grand Rapids.

giQJZKJ.png
KRZnwmF.png

The Brownshirts had escaped Bayreuth on the 8th and moved into nearby Nuremburg. NVA air cavalry were right behind them, however, and quickly put an end to the insurrection. Whether or not the issue had been dealt with was not known, as the movement had no clear leader or command structure. For now it was assumed that they had moved back underground for the time being. At the same time, China was dealing with their own partisan problems. China's loss of cities and failures on the Korean front led to an armed group of citizens trying to force their way into Beijing to make the government pull China out of the war and the Comintern. The PLA weren't having it, and were hunkered down in the capital, determined to stop the rebels from reaching the Chairman.

FO9iUSV.png
93EJWWB.png

While AG-W was enjoying much success in the north, AG-T had reached it's point of overextension. The group had to rely on inferior Dutch supply lines. Supplies and reinforcements couldn't be brought in, and had until now only being achieving victory through it's outnumbering of anything in their way. They were now too severely undermanned to continue. Bringing in Polish reinforcements only gave a temporary solution to the problem. An American counterattack into Augusta on the 14th was successful, quickly followed by Macon on the 17th, and then Charleston on the 20th. The successful attack into Pensacola had to be halted and turned around. On the 23rd, the decision was made to call a retreat from Florida. All divisions in Savannah and Tallahassee were ordered back to Miami.
