The marriage with King Mordvinko is welcome news, close dynastic links with Vladimir can be nothing but good. On the other hand the absolute glut of murders while the boss was away is not good at all, that sort of thing can make a monarch look weak you know...

More land on the plains bodes ill for peace in the south. I know you have been trying go avoid leaving the forests but a buffer zone might be prudent if your vassals are simply going to expand there anyway.

Vladimir relations are improving, Mordvinko doesn't have the poor opinion of having been attacked and losing a wr to Nuyat, but remains a tributary. The marriage ties them even closer, and should help Nuyat's heirs later. The murders seem to continue whether Nuyat is home or not. It's more an issue of certain members of his Council not liking him very much, a risk in the the "...keep your enemies closer" approach.

Merya's vassals are growing stronger and continue trying to claim more land, pushing the borders in directions I would prefer not to go, which may lead to someone pushing back.

So a successful war, a fair few missed messages, and some domestic sorting out needed.

I think a war with Khazaria is coming sooner or later. This move by his vassal may provoke it sooner, but for Merya to continue to grew the Khazars must be tamed.

The Kardazid King of Estonia is protected, but there is definitely concerns being away too long and leaving his Council in charge. At the moment, Nuyat and his vassals have been nibbling away at those who broke free from Khazaria, not directly attacking the horde. But when Khazaria recovers, it will come looking for its lost territory.

I had to chuckle at Erdzivil 'the Whiner' being caught and released only to be caught again.
Kunyavka seems to have a strong enough character to rein in Vladimir, especially given King Mordvinko's laid-back nature.

Erdzivil lost two battles to Merya and paid two sizable ransoms, I was eager to free him again in hopes of fighting him a third time ;).

Kunyavka and Mordvinko seem well suited for each other.

933 – 938 Five Swift Years
933 – 938 Five Swift Years

The next 5 years went by swiftly, there were no major wars for Merya, but there were a number of border conflicts involving mainly Merya’s vassals, although King Nuyat did launch one war of conquest. There was also some raiding and counter-raiding, but most of the more interesting events occurred outside of Merya’s borders.

Nuyat’s vassals did much to expand Merya’s borders to the east. First Chief Nabtiko of Mezen, a vassal to the High Chief of Bjarmia subjugated the independent High Chief Sirtya of Zyriane, a fellow Nenets Chief. Not only did this bring Sirtya and his vassals in to Merya, it also freed the new High Chief Nabtiko of Zyriane from paying homage to the Voice of Merya, High Chief Sarak of Bjarmia, Nabtiko became one of King Nuyat’s more powerful direct vassals and High Chief Sarak was considerably weakened, which suited King Nuyat. High Chief Nabtiko would then forcibly vassalized Chief Veckhas of Kozhva, bringing him into Merya as well. But he wasn’t done yet, as Chief Andyamo of Vychegda, another independent Komi Chief, is the next to come under attack by High Chief Nabtiko of Zyriane.

Meanwhile, Nabtiko’s new vassal, Chief Vechkas of Kozhva, wasted no time and attacked his neighbor, Setyamka Yugra, and usurped the Chiefdom of Vel from her, making him Chief Vechkas of Kozhva and Vel under High Chief Nabtiko of Zyriane.

High Chief Brun II of Mochkava also pushed Merya’s borders further east after he first declared war against another independent Chief, Tyueykezhut, to subjugate Keltma. After he successfully forced Chief Tyueykezhut of Keltma to kneel and become a vassal to Mochkava, then High Chief Brun 'the Monster' launched the Muscovite conquest of Kudymkar against the Tengri High Chief Bator II of Perm, in an attempt to wrest that Komi village from its Pecheneg overlord. High Chief Brun 'the Monster' would win his war for Kudymkar and also oust the Tengri shaman from temple at Kirs, defeating High Chief Bator II of Perm.

Y6qKEQf.jpg

Some of King Nuyat’s other vassals were not as successful. High Chief Kako of Nidaros has launched the conquest of Eystridal, the capitol of Noregr against King Suni 'the Evil' of Noregr, this war would drag on for years with no resolution.

While in the south, High Chief Tylze of Tver tried to duplicate his success in the Liberation of Novosil by declaring the Liberation of Ryazan against Khagan Bugha of Bihorid. This time he failed, being completely routed by the Bihorid horde.

High Chief Alik 'of the Empty Pockets' of Kargopol was the most ambitious of Nuyat’s vassals as he attempted to subjugate King Ensio of Suomi. Nuyat was not happy to hear of his plan, knowing if Alik succeeded, it would pull Kargopol and all of its vassals out of Merya to join the Kingdom of Suomi. But Alik’s vision greatly exceeded his grasp and he was soundly defeated, but not before bringing sorrow to both Kings’ families, King Nuyat’s, as well as King Ensio’s.

Before that war started, Nuyat had seen two of his daughters wed. One daughter, Kunyavka, had gone to south to Vladimir to become Queen, marrying young King Mordvinko, who had come of age. His next daughter, Cherava, had gone north to Suomi to be married to King Ensio’s cousin, Asikko Karjalanien. The new couple would soon have a child, Nuyat’s grandson, Pentti Karjalainen. During the Alik’s war, the warriors of Kargopol had sacked the capitol of Suomi and captured several members of King Ensio’s extended family, including his cousin, Asikko Karjalainen, and Asikko’s newborn son. Nuyat’s son-in-law would die in High Chief Alik of Kargopol's dungeons and Nuyat's grandson, Pentti Karjalainen, would remain a prisoner in Kargopol until the war was over.

King Nuyat’s daughter, Cherava, a widow at 18, returned to Yaroslavl following word of her husband’s death to try and get Nuyat’s help to free her son. But Nuyat could not interfere directly, but strongly encouraged Alik to keep the boy safe and ransom him as soon as possible.

King Nuyat’s only war in this time period was the conquest of Latgale against the High Chief Vykantas of Krivichia, a follow up to the earlier war for Polotsk, completing his ambition to drive the Krivichians south of the Daugava River. Nuyat had called his tributary, young King Mordvinko of Vladimir, as well as the rest of his vassals, to arms. King Mordvinko was quick to pledge his support. The Krivichian villages of Latgale and Lukoml were captured after short sieges. There was a slight setback when Smolensk had fallen to Krivichians, but the attackers were caught before they could move on and were defeated in battle outside of Smolensk. Smolensk itself was freed by an assault on the enemy garrison. Allies to Krivichia tried to recapture Latgale, but King Nuyat led the Meryan army north to relieve siege. In the victorious Battle of Latgale, King Nuyat becomes known as an inspiring leader. Overall, the Meryan conquest of Latgale was overwhelming and terms were soon sent to High Chief Vykantas leading to King Nuyat of Merya usurping the Chiefdom of Latgale.

kDntsYC.jpg

The war is won, but Krivichia's decline would continue as High Chief Nameisis 'the Fox' of Smolensk, a vassal to Khazaria, has launched a war to to subjugate High Chief Vykantas. This victory did lead to Khagan Bugha Bihorid forming a defensive pact against King Nuyat which many pagan leaders joined. Because of this, Nuyat turned to raiding rather than conquest for the rest of this time period.

There was some internal conflict within Merya. Some of which was handled personally by the interested parties, such as the Samayid clan fighting among themselves. First Ngënoh Samayid, Chief of Pinega and grandson of the old High Chief of Velsk, killed his brother, Tatva, in single combat and claimed the Chiefdom of Velsk. But he, in turn was challenged by his other brother, Chief Yadne of Syrj. Chief Yadne wins the challenge and slays his own brother to claim both the Chiefdoms of Velsk and Pinega, reuniting all three lands once held by their father at the cost of two of his brothers’ lives.

bwgQr9E.jpg

Other conflicts led to revolts and wars. Count Terho Tšuudit of Zaozerye started a revolt to press for Orunza's claim on Veps against High Chief Tylmache 'Ironside'. Tylemache ‘Ironside’ was one of Nuyat’s commanders under War Chief Paksyut and was much more skilled at war than Chief Terho, so Terho Tšuudit would lose his revolt and be imprisoned by the High Chief of Veps.

Far to the north, Yavlad 'the Monster' Hasabid of Jamtland is leading the Trondish Revolt against High Chief Kako of Nidaros to press Chief Yadne's claim to Nidaros, while Kako’s war against Noregr continued.

And in High Chief of Tver’s recently liberated lands of Novosil, Kundaç, a Khazar warrior led a peasant revolt. King Nuyat personally led the Merry Men south to deal with the Khazar rebels, defeating them at the Battle of Novosil and quickly ending the Tengri peasant revolt.

But after dealing with the peasant revolt, King Nuyat lead the Merry Men west to raid with two of his commanders, Robin and Koshel. They would first head to into Selija on the south bank of the Daugava River, after Selija was looted and pillaged they crossed the river and attacked Jersika, the capitol of the High Chief of Latgale. Many prisoners were captured at Jersika, including High Chieftess Ausra of Latgale and other family members of High Chief Gedere.

As Nuyat and Merry Men moved north to Talava, they are already sending initial ransoms demands for the prisoners. Ausra is quickly ransomed as are Steikint Vidins, the 8-year old brother to the Chief of Selija and kinsman to the High Chief, and Traidens Vidins, a bastard of the ruling clan.

Elin Toki, the wife of a Latgale courtier, and Asiya bint Khaireddin of the Ikarosid, a Bedoin Sunni concubine, were also captured by Nuyat's raiders. High Chief Gedere of Latgale refuses to ransom either of them. Elin is released to make her own way home, but Nuyat is captivated by Asiya, her exotic coloring and long black hair, so different than anyone he had ever met. Nuyat recruits her, freeing her from prison and offering her a place in Yaroslavl. He then asks if she will become his concubine. He could have forced her when she was a prisoner, but he wanted it to be her choice. She accepts, but as a stranger in a strange land, she may have seen little alternative.

5010uMR.jpg

Talava falls to the Meryan raiders, and then they move west to Riga, Noregr's lone foothold on southern Baltic coast. Riga soon falls in siege to the raiders and Ledurga is looted next. While raiding the temple of Ledurga in Riga, a strange, intricate key is found. Nuyat recognizes that it is made from the same metal as the mysterious chest that has been sitting in Merya’s treasury vault for over 135 years, brought back by Viryay ‘Stonefist’ after one of his raids. The chest has resisted all attempts over the years to open it, but now Nuyat may have found the means to finally learn its secrets.

After Riga, the raiders then headed north into Livland. Livland is part of the Kingdom of Saxony which was fighting off the Crusade in the west at the time. So Livland falls to Meryan raiders with little resistance. Further north is the Kardazid Kingdom of Estonia, so Nuyat ends the raid and heads back to Yaroslavl. The first thing Nuyat does when he finally returns to Yaroslavl, is to head to the treasury to test the strange key. He finds that the key fits in the lock and but as he turns it, a horrible screeching noise is heard and the key and lock both crack and crumble to dust…but the lid pops open. After a hundred and thirty-five years of speculation and greed, Nuyat is the first to behold the vast treasures inside…the treasures of some ancient child. The chest is filled with old toys and useless baubles and trinkets of little value, the impenetrable chest itself would have been worth far more than its contents, if the lock and key had not been destroyed, leaving the chest impossible to close again. Disgusted, Nuyat drags the broken chest and its contents from the treasury and places it in the nursery for his young son Nishkepaz to play with.

g50yTxC.jpg

Using loot from the raids and ransoms, the market town in Yaroslavl will be upgraded. It will take a year. The war camp at Uglich will also be upgraded and that will take almost two years.

While Nuyat’s vassals made war, and he conquered a piece of Krivichia and raided his western neighbors, life continued in Merya, the good and the bad.

W67Tc7c.jpg

Inyava Muromid came of age in Yaroslavl and was married to her betrothed, the young Chief Puresh of Izborsk. But that was another tragic tale, as Parush would soon succumb to cancer, and his younger brother Andyamo of Man would become the new Chief of Izborsk. The 17-year old Chief Andyamo of Izborsk was betrothed to the sister of his brother’s widow, Mazava Muromid, one of Nuyat’s wards. When Mazava Muromid comes of age, she is married to Chief Andyamo of Izborsk and goes to comfort her grieving sister.

nFJYBrT.jpg

Chief Kinyak of Kholm, the last surviving child of King Erziya 'the Bold' died of the Great Pox at the age of 70. His surviving sons split his lands and titles. 13-year old Tul inherits the Chiefdom of Rusa and 25-year old Viryay becomes Chief of Kholm and Borovichi.

Dergun of Udine comes of age, a skilled tactician, naturally strong, and is married Atpälha Ngayid, daughter of the High Chief of Velsk. Queen Anava's bastard son Kezhedey Meryavid from her affair with late Chief Malyy of Hlynov (bushy beards must come from her side of family, as Kezhedey closely resembles his half-brother Parush) is married to Yiltïs Toghan kyzy of the Kiliçli clan.

bQYngzm.jpg

In other happy news, his daughter Tetyava ‘the Merry’ and her husband continue to make babies, first a daughter, named Tetyava after her mother, and then a son named Varaka. And Commander Robin and his wife Marion finally have a child, a son who they name Nuyaksha.

Nuyat’s healer Tyushten diagnoses Nuyat’s first concubine Tada Tobyid as having the Great Pox. As Nuyat had been away raiding for over a year, he knows he had not been the one to give it to her, so Tada is set aside and then married off to High Chief Kako of Nidaros. He accepts despite her affliction, or because it was not mentioned.

Nuyat also begins to plan for the future for his sons. He grants his eldest son Parush the Chiefdom of Mari and then the High Chiefdom of Mari (After a 100 years under the Kingdom of Merya, the High Chiefdom of Mari is no longer considered part of the Kingdom of Volga Bulgaria, but has become a de jure part of Merya). Parush becomes High Chief Parush II of Mari (the first High Chief Parush was the legendary Hero, Parush 'the Great Bear', the friend and companion of Viryay 'Stonefist'). King Nuyat officially nominates his son Parush as the next King of Merya. The nomination shakes up the succession, as High Chief Brun ‘the Monster’ of Mochkava is no longer heir, but not as Nuyat had planned as neither is Parush. Chief Dobrinya of Ryazan has suddenly become the new heir to the Kingdom of Merya.

HkDDgjV.jpg

And once again Nuyat finds himself having to fill positions on his Council as a couple more members are murdered. First Chief Saksa of Mordva is murdered by unknown killer, his 2-year old son Viryas Pure is new Chief of Mordva, with his mother as regent and his newborn brother, Vechkas Pure, as his heir. So Merya once again needs a new Steward. Out of the leading candidates, High Chief Nuyaksha of Murom is chosen to join the Council. He is a good choice as he is still loyal and grateful for Nuyat granting him the High Chiefdom of Murom.

uvyM7JR.jpg

BgTMrQC.jpg

The second murder is spymaster Kichay of Kerzhenets. Chief Kichay was murdered on the orders of Chief Tutyra 'the Quarreller’ of Bezichy of the old Mordvin Tyushten clan. Chief Tutyra of Bezichy is a vassal to High Chief of Veps. Why he had Kichay killed is unclear, but Nuyat assumed Kichay had uncovered some plot Tutyra had been hatching, most likely against his liege. Chief Kichay’s kinsman, Inzhay Varakid, is the new Chief of Kerzhenets. Chief Inzhay of Kerzhenets is also heir to Gorodets, a village in Vladimir. While many of Nuyat’s vassals would like a place on the Council of Merya, they are wary of the dangerous and often fatal role of spymaster. In the end, Nuyat is forced to turn to a foreign-born courtier, Ozgul Bihorid, as the new Spymaster, she is the wife of one of Nuyat’s courtiers, Deryab Roslavsky.

For all that happened within Merya and around its perimeter, more was happening beyond the borders.

King Velmayka of Estonia has died, and another Kardazid has claimed the throne of the Estonian Kings. King Purysho Kardazid now rules Estonia. He has immediately began attacking King Suni 'the Evil' in the subjugation of Noregr.

To the west, Merya’s former enemy Lithuania continued to have troubles. King Rimantas 'the Butcher' of Lithuania died of an infected wound, leaving 11-year old Vizgirdas as King of Lithuania. The vultures were quick to gather around the wounded Lithuania, as it was soon under threat from five different attackers.

9RQQWrF.jpg

c4jF2fI.jpg

But Lithuania’s troubles were minor compared to the Kingdom of Saxony. All of Christianity was marching against the scattered Kingdom. Pope Callistus II has called for a Crusade for Saxony against King Alfr, the Norse King of Saxony. The Saxons had been pushed out of their traditional home 175 years ago, but in that time they had established new de jure boundaries in Scandinavia. Now the Christians were coming to take away their new homeland.

zy97AVY.jpg

King Alfr of Saxony did not last long against the Crusaders as Queen Sunnilda of Brittany was soon granted victory in the Crusade for Saxony by the Pope. Her kinsman, Sikard Varbertingi, a Lombard Catholic, is granted the captured lands as King Sikard 'the Protector' of Saxony. The former King, Alfr of Varde is left with only a four scattered holdings. After 175 years of living on the run, the af Aalborg clan's time may have finally run out.

Further west, the Holy Empire was going through a period of instability following the death of Emperor Ewin 'the Just', the first non-Karling Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. His successor, the new Holy Roman Emperor, from a Frankish dynasty, Emperor Autgari 'the Young' Baberberger died after less than 2 years ruling the Holy Roman Empire. There was no sign of foul play, death appeared natural. He was succeeded by Sicleard Vuodi, the Duke of Dauphine. Emperor Sicleard Vuodi of the Holy Roman Empire lasted less than 6 months, his death also appeared to be of natural causes. Now Wifredo Begonid, the Visogoth, is crowned as the new Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, already older than both his predecessors, but his people hope he will last longer. He does have one success early in his reign as he convinces Toste Kráka, the Norse King of Sjaelland to convert to Catholicism, earning him the nickname Emperor Wifredo 'the Missionary’ of the Holy Roman Empire. The conversion of Sjaelland along with the earlier fall of Saxony, left only the Kingdom of Noregr as champions of Odin and the other Germanic Gods, though a few followers remained as vassals to High Chief Kako of Nidaros in Merya.

YBjvxmF.jpg

v0Oka8E.jpg

But while the Catholics are gaining strength in the north, following the successful Crusade and Wifredo’s missionary work, they are losing ground far to the south. Badshah Hussayn 'the Tenacious' of the Umayyad Empire has crossed the length of the Mediterranean Sea to take back the City of Jerusalem from King Boleslaw, the former leader of the successful Children’s Crusade. Now, the Sheikdom of Jerusalem is back in Muslim hands after 19 years under Christian rule. King Boleslaw of Jerusalem's troubles are far from over, with one internal revolt and two other wars coming from his neighbors. But he soon is forced to abdicate by the leaders of the internal revolt, passing the rest of those troubles to his son Lucjan. The newly crowned Christian King Lucjan of Jerusalem is now under attack from Emir Idris of the Muzaffaraddin, as well as Prince Aghlab 'the Terrible' of the Abbasid Empire, Sheikh Adhid of Eilat, and Emir Musa of Trebizond, with his only aid coming from the Knights of Sardinia. Each of the different Muslim lords are making separate claims to Jerusalem lands and titles, should they win there will be little left of the Crusader Kingdom.

Well that is a disappointing end to the chest

The Crusading spirit in the Baltic is not a positive development for Merya, I think.

Hmmm, the Kargopol Finnish war is not great for our family loving Nuyat. He might still have an appetite for revenge if his grandson were to die.
Asiya seems nice enough but is certainly in an unenviable position. I wonder how far away and long ago she was first captured.
Dobrinya has the temperament of a king but seems rather lacking in the skills department. Though I'm sure the electors might warm to a content (and easy to manipulate) king.

I think I've completed the chest twice now, once was just dust from old books, and then this box of trinkets, maybe someday will get a bigger prize. The Catholics are slowly creeping eastward and will soon be on Merya's doorstep. But they will have some setbacks.

Luckily, the grandson is released unharmed, and Alik will soon be beyond the reach of any vengeance from Nuyat. Hard to say how long ago Asiya was taken, she is far from home and her parents are both dead, she does have a couple siblings, but it is doubtful she will ever see them again. But she will soon be tied to the Kardazid by blood and her children will have a chance to rise high.

Dobrinya is an ordinary man, if he becomes King he may have a chance to rise to the occasion, but he has no close family or allies, so he will be starting in a weak position.

939 – 943 Subjugation of Latgale and the Gift of Estonia
939 – 943 Subjugation of Latgale and the Gift of Estonia

Nuyat had not been home long, but his thoughts kept returning to Latgale, Not the recently conquered village of Latgale that he he stolen from Kirivichia, but the lands ruled by the so-called High Chief of Latgale, Gedere.

At the next Council meeting he broached the topic, “I have been thinking of pushing west and continuing to follow the Daugava River all the way to the Gulf of Riga.”

War Chief Paksyut added his thoughts. “The recent raids you led into High Chief Gedere’s territory have shown how poorly defended it is. We should have no problem defeating any warband he could raise against us.”

High Chief Sarak, spoke up, “High Chief Gedere’s lands don’t border the Gulf Riga.”

Nuyat sighed, “I know that, but they are the next step, then we will deal with who is left between us the coast. But I don’t want to waste years taking Gedere’s lands at a piece at a time, like we did to claim the villages of Polotsk and Latgale from Krivichia. I want to take all of High Chief Gedere’s lands all at once.”

Sarak frowned, “That could be dangerous, our neighbors may not take much notice of us occasionally claiming a village or two along our border as we have done in the past, but seizing all of Latgale at once will raise alarms. You will be seen as a would-be conqueror and they would fear they would be next. The work of High Chief Nabtiko and High Chief Brun pushing our borders to the east has already made some nervous. If you start a large-scale war, they will certainly turn against us.”

Nuyat shook his head, “This subjugation of Latgale would be a one-time thing, I wouldn’t be making a practice of it. If they do band together for defense, it will be after we succeed in Latgale, so it won’t matter. After that only Riga itself will stand in our way to the sea. And the Norse who hold it have few allies left.”

uoyNJdx.jpg

“Make plans to call our allies and vassals to war.”

Paksyut chuckled, “Your son-in-law, King Mordvinko, has recently joined the Followers of Otso. He’s hoping to make a name for himself as a Hero King much like King Erziya ‘the Bold’ or King Dergun ‘the Faceless’ of old. For now, he’s still just at the ‘Fledgling’ rank in the warrior society. So, I think young King Mordvinko will be quick to agree to help, it’ll be his first step on his way toward becoming a Hero.” He ended with a smirk.

Nuyat answered coldly, “He will join us us because it is his duty and obligation as our tributary, whatever his other motives or fantasies. Send word to him and the rest of my vassals.”

Nuyat’s vassals were called to war and only two refused, High Chief Kako of Nidaros and High Chief Nabtiko of Zyriane. Nuyat wasn’t sure if they refused due to the logistics of reaching Latgale, as they were the two furthest vassals from the planned war and it would take months for their levys to arrive, or if they had other reasons to defy him. King Mordvinko of course agreed, whether he did so out of obligation and duty as tributary, ally, and son-in-law, or as part of a quest to become a Hero, Nuyat just didn’t care.

High Chief Gedere of Latgale of course called in his own allies, but he couldn’t come close to matching Merya’s numbers.

jzEHkYs.jpg

While the first contingent of Meryan warriors moved toward the Latgale capitol at Jersika. Nuyat wrapped up things in Yaroslavl, before heading west to join the campaign. The work in Uglich to upgrade the war camp had been completed, and Nuyat left orders for additional upgrades to be made to the war camp in Yaroslavl and to the practice range in Uglich.

Also, by the time he left, his new concubine Asiya was pregnant.

XFMntVP.jpg

M1qZ7nd.jpg

Before Nuyat even arrived at the front, the first battle of the war had been fought outside the village of Latgale. The Battle of Latgale consisted of 6,000 Meryans versus 1,200 Latgalians. 67-year old Chief Vladislav of Toropets was leading Meryan army and performed heroicly in this first battle. He defeated enemy commander in personal combat in spectactular fashion, reportedly decapitating the man with a single blow. The Battle of Latgale was won with only 29 Meryan losses versus 400 casualties from Latgale. Chief Vladislav had then turned south and crossed the Daugava River following the rumors of the main Latgale army. Meanwhile, Nuyat led his contingent of Meryan warriors acoss the border and lay siege to the capitol of Jersika. Some of his vassals led their troops further north to lay siege to Talava.

Dbas9ly.jpg

By the time Jersika fell to Nuyat, Chief Vladislav had given up the chase and settled in to siege Selija. Once Selija and then Talava fell into his hands, Nuyat had control of his main goal, Latgale’s lands along both sides of the Daugava River. But the war was not over. High Chief Gedere still had control of his southern territories, lands Nuyat had little interest in, but need to conquer to get Gedere to surrender.

As he gathered his armies together to press south across Khazarian territory to reach Gedere’s southern holdings, Nuyat received some surprising news from the north. High Chief Tasulemb of Estonia, sometimes called the ‘Son of Tuoni', was a leader of a political faction in Estonia. This faction’s main goal was to overthrow their own King Purysho of Estonia and then offer the crown Nuyat. They wanted to place the King of Merya on the throne of Estonia, they felt Estonia was only safe when under Merya’s protection. And the word was that they had gone beyond mere talk and were now in open rebellion against King Purysho to make that happen. At this point, tied up in a war of his own, Nuyat could only wish them luck. He, also, learned, he had another daughter. Asiya had given birth to a girl, who she had named Badiat after her mother.

uyJEYaW.jpg

5I9OwUE.jpg

High Chief Gedere had sent an army north to try and free Jersika and the other villages. Before Nuyat could commit to pressing the war in the south, he needed to eliminate Latgale’s army. It was 5,000 men under the command of King Mordvinko that caught up to 3,500 of Gedere’s men near Latgale. Mordvinko’s victory in Second Battle of Latgale, did not end of war, but it now allowed Nuyat to send his warriors against Gedere’s extensive southern holdings.

The Meryan warbands followed the portage routes between the Daugava and the Dneiper Rivers across the Khazarian territory of Vitebsk and soon lay siege to Gedere’s vassal villages at Orsha and Drutsk. Once Orsha and Drutsk were captured, the Meryans followed the Dneiper further south into Slutsk. When Slutsk and the temple at Gomel fell to the Meryans, High Chief Gedere had had enough, and conceded defeat. The Meryan-Latgalian Subjugation War was over as High Chief Gedere bent the knee as a vassal of King Nuyat of Merya.

High Chief Sarak, the Voice of Merya, was quickly proven right, less than a week after Nuyat’s victory, Khagan Iltäbär of Ashina formed a defensive pact against King Nuyat. Pagans, whether Tengri, Romuva, Slavic, Norse, or even his fellow Suomenusko, were invited to join the pact to defend against Meryan aggression. The new King Sikard of Saxony would soon form a Christian defensive pact of his own against Merya, but as it only consisted of just two Kings, King Sikard of Saxony and King Msciwoj of Poland, it did not worry Nuyat as he had no intention of attacking either one.

UKuNpvU.jpg

Before Nuyat dismisses his army, he sends messengers north to check on the situation in Estonia. They find King Purysho of Estonia still defending against the rebellion of High Chief Tasulemb ‘Son of Tuoni' of Estonia who has not waivered in his commitment to place King Nuyat of Merya on the throne of Estonia. King Nuyat quickly decides to support High Chief Tasulemb in his revolt and Tasulemb eagerly accepts King Nuyat's aid. It seems although the pagan defensive pact against Merya had quickly become large and powerful, joining Tasulemb in his rebellion doesn't trigger it.

Nuyat’s vassals and tributary have no obligation to support Nuyat’s decision to join Tasulemb’s war and head for home, leaving only the Merry Men and Nuyat’s personal levys to join the war. They marched north into Pskov, which has remained loyal to King Purysho. Pskov fell quickly to a siege, and then they pushed north and encountered a small force of loyalists at Gdov, leading to the Battle of Gdov, well more of a skirmish. The victory in Battle of Gdov gave the Meryans complete access to eastern Estonia and they lay siege to Gdov.

King Nuyat took ill soon after the siege camp was established around Gdov and was carried back to Yaroslavl to recover, leaving the siege and war in the hands of Chief Vladislav. Tyushten, his court healer as well as Diviner thinks it is onset of slow fever. He has Nuyat fast for a week, to no effect. Nuyat condition grows worse, what had started as cramps has now led to worse as he becomes nauseous and begins vomiting violently. Tyushten amends his diagnosis to food poisoning. His remedy is unconventional, he prescribes no laughter. This actually seems to keep the vomiting under control, but then Nuyat develops a fever.

His concubine Asiya took on the task of nursing Nuyat through his illness. She had her own ideas on what may make Nuyat feel better. These methods proved only effective in distracting Nuyat from his suffering for a short time, but they do lead to Asiya becoming pregnant again.

i46B2LG.jpg

Other members of the court at Yaroslavl were already pregnant, as a daughter is soon born to Nuyat’s daughter Tetyava 'the Merry' and her husband, Briachislav, who they named Elyuvia. And a son is born to Semyava of Man and her lowborn husband, Putyayka, the boy is named Kezhedey of Man. Queen Anava's bastard son, Kezhedey, has his first child, a son he also names Kezhedey and takes the clan name Kezhedeyid for his new family.

The food poisoning or whatever malady it was, kept Nuyat confined to Yaroslavl for over six months. Nuyat wasn’t the only one to become sick, but his son, Parush and his wife, as well as Chief Reko of Belo Ozero and others all suffered from cases of the flu, rather than from poisoning. Parush would soon recover, but Parush’s wife and Chief Reko would both die from the flu. Reko’s son Ahvo would become the new Chief of Belo Ozero.

While Nuyat convalesced in Yaroslavl, the rebellion in Estonia continued. Gdov would fall to Nuyat’s men, and they would move north into Ingria on the Gulf of Finland. The Merry Men broke off the siege of Ingria when they received world an Estonian army had arrived in Gdov hoping to free it from Merya. This led to the second Battle of Gdov, 1,900 Merry Men against 600 Estonians. Before the Battle ended, 700 rebels joined the battle leading to a crushing victory. The allies would lose only 17 men, while the Loyalists lost half their men and two of their commanders were captured, Tarva of Radicofani and Vilitõiv Ridala. The Merry Men returned north to resume their siege of Ingria while the rebels pursued the surviving Loyalists as they fled south.

Finally, King Nuyat was free from the food poisoning and was recovering rapidly. He found himself possessed of a restless energy and was soon wandering throughout his home at odd hours. In one of these nightly forays he stumbles on Chief Panay of Romny dallying with his daughter Anava. Chief Panay wisely flees home to Romny and Nuyat immediately arranges a marriage for his young daughter to Chief Wayngachiof Hålogaland. Kings, such as Hakon of Noregr had sought her hand, but now Anava is sent off to be the wife of a lowly Chief, on the outskirts of the Kingdom.

On the southern borders, raiders from Khazaria are looting and pillaging. Orsha and Drutsk, two of Nuyat’s newest territories are being raided is Novosil. Nuyat cares little for the troubles of the Lettigallians in Prsha and Drutsk or the Khazar peasants in Novosil, none are his direct vassals. High Chief Gedere of Latgale and High Chief Tylze of Tver would need to protect their vassals, Nuyat was already making plans to rejoin the war in Estonia.

The practice range upgrades are finished in Uglich. Nuyat instructs his steward, High Chief Nuyaksha of Murom, to immediately begin construction of Camouflaged Outposts in Uglich. But before he can get started High Chief Nuyasksha died of stress. His son Nuyaksha becomes the new High Chief of Murom. King Nuyat looks at his options for a replacement on the Council and reluctantly deides to make High Chief Brun 'the Monster' of Mochkava the new Steward. He has little liking for Brun, but he is one of Nuyat’s most powerful vassals, especially with the new lands he has acquired in the east.

The current heir to Merya, Chief Dobrinya of Ryazan, comes to Yaroslavl and offers Nuyat a donation to the Meryan war chest in exchange for a favor. Nuyat doesn’t trust him, he knows that Dobrinya knows that Nuyat doesn’t support him as the next King. Owing that man a favor would only be working against his own son in some way. Ozgul Bihorid, Nuyat’s spymaster, agrees with Nuyat and promises to keep an eye on Dobrinya. She also mentions that High Chief Alik of Kargopol has been showing support for some of the factions in Merya. She thinks he can be discouraged from joining factions with some subtle threats. Nuyat agrees, he has not forgotten Alik’s treatment of Nuyat’s late son-in-law and grandson, who was returned safely to Suomi. High Chief Alik is quick to ask for forgiveness and pledge to stay out of factions. The threats may have been too effective. High Chief Alik of Karogpol is soon dead, when his heart gives out. His kinsman Sarak becomes the new High Chief of Kargopol.

Word came that Ingria had fallen to the Merry Men and they were moving west to Kalevan. Nuyat was eager to rejoin them, but he delayed his departure to await the birth of his latest child. A short time later, a son was born to Nuyat and Asiya bint Khaireddin. Nuyathad originally thought to call the boy Tul, but was persuaded by Asiya to name the boy after her father Khaireddin. The baby greatly favored his mother’s looks. A son was also born to one of Nuyat’s commanders, Koshel Koshelid and his wife Nuyanza of Udine, who they named Naruchad. Nuyanza had a tough pregnancy as she was 45 years old when the boy was born.

Once they were sure that both the mothers and babies were healthy, Nuyat and Koshel headed west to rejoin the Merry Men at Kalevan. With them went Nuyat’s bastard son, Çortah Kardazid. Çortah had just come of age, a tough soldier, strong, stout, diligent, kind and deceptively quick. People would see his barrel chest and wide build and assume he was fat, but it was actually all muscle. If not for his gentle nature, he would be a fierce warrior. Çortah barely had time to get acquainted with his new bride, Kalli kohta Sakala, an Estonia girl, before Nuyat dragged him off to his first war. Nuyat also took War Chief Paksyut’s latest find, another warrior promoted from the ranks named Tyushtya.

The small war party arrived just as Kalevan falls to the siege, Nuyat tells the Merry Men to leave the Suomenusko temple near Kalevan untouched, and they march south Läänemaa. Läänemaa does not hold out long and soon falls in siege. Again, Nuyat orders the Suomenusko temple at Livs spared, if he was to become King of Estonia, he wanted the local shamen on his side, not turning the peasants against him.

The High Chief of Sakala is the only loyalist who lands and armies remain intact. After a brief skirmish in Alempois, the Merry Men catch up with the main warband of Sakala in Livland. The Merry Men quickly defeat the Sakalans, breaking the last loyalist army.

AG6zgNl.jpg

Soon King Nuyat of Merya receives word from High Chief Tasulemb, Purysho has abdicated in favor of Nuyat though he will remain free and remain Chief of Kalevan and Läänemaa. Estonia Revolt is over, Tasulemb won. Tasulemb formally offers Nuyat the Estonian throne and swears allegiance as his vassal.

With Nuyat’s crowning as King of Estonia, he nows rules over a vast stretch of land from the Baltic Sea to the Ural Mountains, a land of rivers, forests, tundra, steppe and plains, as well as the fjords of the Norwegian coast. But Nuyat was not satisfied. He still has his sights set on his original target of Riga, at the mouth of the Daugava River, and he does not yet rule all of Estonia, as Liivimaa and the holy island of Saaremaa are held by others. But to claim any of those he will need to face the defensive pacts that are growing even stronger, as they react to the news that Merya has claimed Estonia as well as Latgale.

Estonia secured is surely a strategic good - with it under Merya's sway it won't as easily fall to the Catholics. Some peace now might be needed.

I wonder if the bouts of disease might be a sign from above to not meddle in Estonian affairs, we will have to see what the new kingdom will bring.
Merya is an impressive powerhouse and, without crusades any time soon, I can't see anything stopping it.

The Catholics are certainly attempting to make inroads into the neightborhood, but it hasn't been smooth sailing for them. as you will see shortly. Nuyat has a few more things he wants before he thinks of peace.

Yes, the first two Kings were Heroes in the Followers of Otso, but Virdyan and Nuyat were not even members. Virdyan was blackballed from the warrior society by the Hero King Dergun, for murdering Dergun's younger brother. Despite that Virdyan was a very good warrior with a very high combat number. Nuyat's upbringing, living in squalor from a young, he didn't have a sponsor to get into the Followers, and by the time I came to control him, he was already in his 30's, he had a military education, and decent grasp of military, but he wasn't a strong individual fighter.

Nuyat continued to have success, so overall the Gods seem pleased.

There has been three Crusades already, the Karling victory for Croatia, the Children's Crusade for Jerusalem, and Brittany's victory against Norse Saxony, but Merya hasn't had much direct conflict with Christians yet.

A mighty empire indeed. The true test will be standing up to the Christ cultists and their nailed god.

Merya has grown, and will expand a little further under Nuyat's watch, it will have it's first war with Christians (other than an internal revolt against a Catholic vassal), but it is not against a Christian powerhouse.

Hail Nuyat, the Conqueror.

Nuyat doesn't control the right territories to create one of the "traditional" de jure Empires, or the prestige to create a custom one. The holy island of Saaremaa is one of the next targets Nuyat is considering.

943-945 Collecting the Missing Pieces

Nuyat took a a break after the claiming Estonia to travel to Mari to attend the wedding of his son, Parush. High Chief Parush of Mari’s first wife, Vardo Aslany chyzg, had died of the flu leaving him with three young children. Now, less than a year later, he was taking a new bride. Nuyat had been surprised to learn who his new daughter-in-law would be. Parush was marrying Atpälha 'the Heavenly' of the Samayids. Marrying into the Samayid Clan was an astute political move, as the Samayids held the High Chiefdoms of Nidaros as well as Bjarmia. But this particular Samayid was Parush’s first cousin, King Nuyat’s niece. Atpälha 'the Heavenly' was the daughter of Nuyat’s sister, Sanal’ka, who had been the concubine of the previous High Chief of Bjarmia. Sanal’ka herself had died a couple years earlier from a bad heart. So Nuyat found himself at the wedding representing both the bride and the groom, as both of Atpälha’s parents were dead, and her other uncles were not quite welcome. Nuyat’s older half-brother, Syrka, was still in Kostroma, suffering from the Great Pox and no longer completely sane, and his other half-brother, Chief Kichay of Naro-Fominsk, was under a cloud as a tribal kinslayer and murderer (Of course Nuyat was also a kinslayer and murderer, but he had not been caught). Nuyat being the bride’s uncle as well as her King made him a closer relative than any of her Samayid cousins.

GvxccXi.jpg

At the wedding reception, Nuyat wished the bride and groom good health and long life and also, as a wedding present, Nuyat transferred the vassalage of Chief Inzhay of Kerzhenets to the High Chiefdom of Mari. He also used the opportunity to announce the upcoming marriage of another of his sons. Nishkepaz had just come of age and a marriage had been arranged between him and Yrsa of Palenke, a gifted young woman from Vanema, she had been born a Lithuanian, but raised by the Norse and yet still followed the Romuvan gods. She had caught young Nishkepaz’s eye and he had begged his father to allow him to marry her. Nuyat had indulged him even though she had no prospects, other than a weak claim on Vanema.

As soon as Nuyat returned to Yaroslavl, he put the Council to work on seeing the three territories he desired brought into Merya. First there was Liivimaa, or Livland as it was currently called, an independent holding, one of the scattered Norse lands left over after the bulk of Saxony was claimed by the Catholic Crusade. It would have been an easy target except it had joined massive pagan defensive pact against King Nuyat. Nuyat wasn’t ready to be attacked on all sides to defeat a single Chief, so he set that idea aside for now.

hQGHnim.jpg

Next was Riga, at the mouth of the Daugava River, a part of the Kingdom of Noregr. It was Noregr’s one foothold on the eastern shore of the Baltic. Noregr had a new King, Hakon ‘the Chaste’, as King Suni ‘the Evil’, the previous King, had been killed by Kostislava ‘the Ruthless’ a warrior in the Sons of Perun. She had faced off with him in single combat during a battle against the Swedish and killed him in front of his whole army. Now King Hakon was continuing to fight the war with Sweden. So, this might be an opportune time to conquer Riga. Except there was the same issue, King Hakon of Noregr was also a member of the pagan defensive pact against King Nuyat.

7wRIRtN.jpg

Finally, the Council turned to Saaremaa, which was called Osel by its current ruler, King Dan of Lithuania. Young King Vizgirdas of Lithuania had been deposed by Dan af Austergautland, a Norse warrior who had crowned himself King of Lithuania, at the start of the new year. The Lithuania Dan had conquered was not what it once was, it was now nothing but a scattering of territory along the Baltic coast. King Dan ruled his new Kingdom from Osel, a Norse ruler over an unhappy Lithuanian population. But of greatest interest to Nuyat, was the newly crowned King had not yet joined the defensive pact created to thwart Nuyat’s ambitions.

King Nuyat wasted no time and called his allies to war in the conquest of Saaremaa, before King Dan realized his danger and sought the protection of the Pact. All his vassals agreed to join the fight except two of the most recently acquired ones, High Chief Gedere of Latgale and High Chief Nuyat of Pskov. Of course, his son-in-law, King Mordvinko of Vladimir, the would-be Hero, also pledged his support.

XDUopl4.jpg

Chief Vladislav once again was placed in command o the initial Meryan attack which embarked from Laanemaa and sailed across the Gulf of Riga to Osel. A small Lithuanian force tried to stop them from landing, but they overwhelmend by the larger Meryan warband at Dagő. High Chief Karijotas of Yatvingia was captured in the battle, a Lithuanian fighting for the Norse King. The surviving Lithuanians escaped in boats and fled south to Tukums, held by the independent High Chief of Livonia. The Meryans remained on Osel, laying siege to the main village. Also, a substantial ransom was arranged to free High Chief Karijotas.

psUBXNp.jpg

By midsommar, Osel has been captured and the Meryans lay siege to the Odin’s temple at Dagő, a temple that profanes the holy place that should be dedicated to the Suomenusko Gods. Dagő falls in less than a month, all of the holy island is controlled by the Meryans. Now they just need to hunt down King Dan and make him see his resistance is futile.

The Meryans cross the mouth of the Gulf of Riga and land in Tukums, there they meet the Lithuanian army led once again by the recently ransomed High Chief Karijotas and another Lithuanian Chief, there is no sign of the Norse King Dan. The Lithuanians are defeated with minimal losses to Merya and flee further south. Chief Vladislav leads the Meryans to Vanema where a host of Meryan vassals join him. With close to 10,000 under his command, Vladislav wastes no times and takes Vanema in a quick assault.

ByvoA5Q.jpg

South of Vanema, the large Meryan host, meets the last remnants of the Lithuanian troops and kills half of them in the Battle of Zemaitja. King Dan meekly accepts Nuyat’s demands, and turns over the Osel, now called Saaremaa to Nuyat. Nuyat’s first act is to drive the Godi Dyre from Odin’s temple at Dagő, and rededicate as the Temple of Hiiumaa, dedicated to Akka. Litava Kyldysin, a Khanty priestess, is put in charge of the reborn temple.

HSIRQrV.jpg

The Gods appear to be pleased with Nuyat’s liberation of Saaremaa for they have provided him with a gift. As the war for Saaremaa had been winding down, King Hakon ‘the Chaste’ of Noregr had been converted to the Catholic faith by emissaries sent by Emperor Wifredo ‘the Missionary’ of the Holy Roman Empire. Hakon led a great ritual and announced to the world that all of Noregr had forsaken Odin and the rest of the Aesir and had embraced the White Christ. Unfortunaltey for Hakon, he was wrong. His people had not forsaken the Old Gods and immediately launched a war against ‘the Great Norwegian Conversion’, led by a Chieftain named Tyke ‘the Usurper’ Dovre. Emperor Wifredo didn’t lift a finger to help his new brother in Christ (Maybe he had planned to, but he died and Duke Peter of Baden was elevated as the new German Kaiser of the Holy Roman Empire).

fIHJx6y.jpg

5MUFvPm.jpg

KUHKyB1.jpg

King Hakon had to withdraw from the pagan defensive pact and quickly join the Christian Defensive pact, but his new defensive pact consisted of just Poland and now Noregr. King Dan of Lithuania belatedly took Hakon’s place in the pagan defensive pact against King Nuyat, but obviously much too late. Meanwhile, 5-year old Hjalmar af Aalborg was now the Chief of Livland. His regents had kept Livland in the defensive pact against King Nuyat. But it didn’t matter, in less than a month after Hakon’s conversion and withdrawal from the pagan defensive pact, it suddenly collapsed, dropping from over 20 members to down to one, and now both Livland and Riga were unprotected.

King Nuyat was not one to refuse gifts from the Gods. So, he moved against both Livland and Noregr at the same time, deciding it made sense to mobilize his vassals and levys for both wars at once rather than fight them singley and drag everything out. He didn’t expect either to hold out long. He even offered Chief Hjalmar a chance to accept vassalization first, but Livland’s regents refused the offer.

SGPXrms.jpg

Merya’s vassals and King Mordvinko were called to arms for both wars. Four vassals refused, High Chief Nuyat of Pskov, High Chief Nabtiko 'the Mule' of Zyriane, High Chief Gedere 'the Drunkard' of Latgale, and High Chief Tasulemb 'Son of Tuoni' of Estonia.

The war for Livland was over in a matter of months. It took longer to gather the army than it did to actualy fight the war. The Livland’s small warband was brushed aside in the Battle of Talava and then the village of Liivimaa and the temple at Gaujiena were quickly captured. The regency council of Livland surrendered immediately and King Nuyat usurped both titles from young Hjalmar and his Godi at Gaujiena.

JimRH0h.jpg

With the war for Livland over, all the focus turned to Riga. Riga itself was captured quickly by Nuyat’s vassals. But in order to formally take control, Nuyat needed to get King Hakon to accept his loss, and Hakon was running from his own people as they refuted his conversion to Catholicism. Nuyat sent a warband north toward Eystridal, the capitol of Noregr. It would take them months to get there, but if they were able to take it before the Noregr rebellion was resolved, the war would be over and Riga would be part of Merya. But if Noregr settled its internal conflict and was united first, Nuyat’s war could then turn into a much longer, drawn out affair.

dFGXH2L.jpg

Chief Vladislav of Toropets led the Meryan warband east along the Estonian coast of the Gulf of Finland then made its way north into Swedish territory. Sweden has dealt with its own issues with the Christian God. King Cyzrzniech 'the Gouty ' of Sweden, a Catholic had become King of Sweden upon the death of his brother, the Polish King Sedzimir I, who had conquered Sweden from the Pomeranians. The presence of a Catholic King had led to war with Noregr before its own King was converted. But King Cyzrzniech 'the Gouty ' had died and his nephew, the new 12-year old King Sedzimir II was a Slavic pagan like his father before him. The Catholics in Sweden had suffered a major setback, but they were still tryng to gain control of the regency and the future of Sweden. As such, they were too distracted to challenge the Meryan army crossing their lands.

But the Meryans did meet some resistance, but not from the Swedes or from King Hakon, instead in Kakisalmi they came up against some pf the Norse rebels who were also fighting King Hakon against his attempt to make them Catholic. While they had the same enemy, it did not make them friends. If the rebellion ended first, Merya would need to fight these men, and the Meryans were trying to conquer part of Noregr, and the rebels saw them as invaders, so the two armies met in the Battle of Kakisalmi. The Meryans out numbered the Norse rebels two to one and defeated them soundly.

OTYnYwb.jpg

DFFYe3W.jpg

Chief Vladislav didn’t pursue the survivors, but instead headed west to the coast to find ships to take his men across the Sea of Åland, and bring them closer to Eystridal. Once they landed, they continued west into the mountains to reach the Noregr capitol. They arrived six months after the fall of Riga. Eystridal was held by the rebels, but Chief Vladislav wasted no time and quickly overwhelmed the small rebel garrisons holding the Eystridal and the temple of Elverum. With that, Merya controlled all of Noregr that had not revolted against its King. Hakon had no choice but to surrender Riga to King Nuyat. Eystridal was freed and left to the mercy of the Norse rebels. And Meryan levys first traveled north into Nidaros, to recuperate before they began their long march home.

yIWuqFK.jpg

1no2Sp1.jpg

When the Yaroslavl levys finaly returned from Nidaros, they brought Nuyat’s daughter, Anava, with them. Anava’s husband, Chief Wayngachiof of Hålogaland, had died attending to chamber business. While Wayngachi‘s two young children, Nuyat’s grandson Salinder Samayid, 2 years old, and newborn granddaughter Ilme Samayid, would remain in Hålogaland under the care of the new Chief Panay Samayid, Anava wanted to return to Yaroslavl, and took the opportunity to travel home under the protection of her father’s warband.

King Nuyat had achieved his goal, all three of the coastal territories in Estonia and at the mouth of the Daugava River were now part of Merya.

It does occur to me that with the various Baltic regions between Merya and the Christian powers becoming taken over just means the moment of a true conflict between the two is just getting closer and closer.

Dear me, Lithuania is quite pathetic by this point, it would be best to put it out of its misery.
Norway really picked the wrong moment to convert. Much better to embrace the Suomenusko gods and Merya.
I might be wrong, but it looks like Merya now owns three holy sites with two more being within reach. Has Nuyat's time finally come to craft a hammer against these Christians?

The buffer states between Merya and the Christians are all but gone, especially with Noregr and Sweden both trying to establish Catholic rulers. The northeastern corner of Europe will become soon be a choice between Suomenusko or Catholic.

A flury of new conquests! I hope the momentum does not stop there, it seems to be time to gather as much strength as possible.

Nuyat will become distracted from further conquest in the near future, but his vassals will continue to push the boundaries of Merya, in some cases even further than expected.

Lithuania has become very unstable and will change hands repeatedly. King Hakon certainly misjudged his people's devotion to the Old Gods and is feeling their displeasure.

Merya is on the cusp of bringing most of the Holy Sites under its control, but there is one major impediment to reformation, Nuyat himself.

946 – 950 A Good Witch
946 – 950 A Good Witch

After the intensity of five wars in five years, Nuyat turned to internal affairs. This was partly prompted by the fact that the conquest of Livland had led to a renewed commitment by his neighbors to the pagan defensive pact against him. But it was mainly had to do with the death of his wife, Anava Pure, the Queen of Merya.

Nuyat and Anava’s relationship had evolved into a polite truce since the incident 15 years ago that had led to the execution of Chief Malyy. But the Queen was still an important part of his life and the life of the six children they had conceived together, and her death at the age of 51 was still a shock, even though it was deemed natural causes. Her death caused Nuyat to begin looking more closely at the future in store for his children and to take steps to prepare for his own inevitable passing.

id4X4st.jpg

His oldest child Tetyava ‘the Merry’ was happily married with a passel of children running around Yaroslavl. He wasn’t sure what would happen to them when he was gone and someone else become King in Yaroslavl. Perhaps their future would be far to the south, if Nuyat had time to help his son-in-law Briachislav press his Volhynian claims against the Bulçir horde. But more likely their future would depend on Nuyat’s plans for his eldest son.

Nuyat had already granted Parush the High Chiefdom of Mari and then further added to his strength by transferring another Chief to him as vasssal. But he also was actively supporting Parush as the next in line of succession for the Throne of Merya. If his plan was successful, Parush would be able to protect the family as King. Currently, Parush wasn’t the frontrunner, so Nuyat needed to continue to spread his influence to raise further support for his son.

Nuyat’s three other daughters with Queen Anava had all been married off, but things had not turned out well for all of them. While Kunyavka was happily married and Queen of Vladimir, the two younger girls had faced tragedy. Cherava’s husband had died in the dungeons of Kargopol, and now Anava was returning home following the death of her own husband to dysentery. When they were ready, Nuyat would arrange new marriages that will hopefully provide them with a happier future.

That left Nuyat’s younger son with Anava, Nishkepaz, as well as his two young children, Baidat and Khaireddin, with Asiya, and his bastard son, Çortah, with Teken.

Nuyat would first look to dealing with the futures of his two adult sons, Çortah and Nishkepaz. Çortah as a bastard wasn’t entitled to any inheritance from Nuyat, and so Nuyat would need to provide for him before he died, or legitimize him to make him eligible to claim a portion of Nuyat’s holdings after he died. Nuyat did not intend to legitimize Çortah. Not only would the action displease his legitimate children, it would in away dishonor the memory of the wife he had just buried, if the first action he did after she was gone was to foreswear his betrayal of her.

Instead he turned to the new lands that he had added to Merya over the last five years to provide for his sons’ futures. Before he did that he had to deal with the Chiefdoms of Liivimaa and Riga, more specifically, the two associated temples that would need to be handed over to more spiritual leaders. In Liivimaa, Nuyat chose a distant cousin, Ashava Ryazan, the granddaughter of Sinyava ‘the Heavenly’, to become the Priestess of Guajiena. Ashava was an extraordinary woman, with beauty and wisdom and an extensive knowledge of the Gods. She was widowed, and her three children were all but grown, so she welcomed this new task.

For the Temple of Ledurga in Riga, Nuyat turned to his longtime spiritual advisor and healer. Tyushten, the court diviner and healer of Merya, had served Nuyat as personal healer for close to twenty years and had served all of Merya as the Court Diviner for close to ten. Nuyat trusted him and decided to reward him, so Tyushten was elevated to the position of Shaman of Ledurga. He would still continue in his previous roles as well as taking on these new duties.

Nuyat decides Latgale and Estonia would provide land for his sons. Nuyat already holds the village of Latgale and plans to give it to his son, Çortah, but he wants to him more than just a Chiefdom. High Chief Gedere of Latgale refused to join in and support Nuyat in the last three wars, so Nuyat decides to punish him for that, as well as provide a suitable legacy for his son at the same time. Gedere still follows the Romuvan Gods, which allows Nuyat to revoke his land or titles without being seen as a tyrant, though the other Romuvan followers in Merya will not be happy. Gedere is also one of the most powerful vassals in Merya, as he brought all seven of his Lettigallian vassals into Merya with him. Nuyat decides revoking the High Chiefdom of Latgale from Gedere will serve multiple purposes. It will punish Gedere for refusing to support Nuyat in his wars, it will break up the strong unified Lettigallian bloc within Merya, and it will provide Nuyat with a higher title to bestow on his son. The only concern is, will Gedere accept the revocation peaceably? Or will he revolt?

But it turned out, High Chief Gedere hadn’t forgotten how easily Merya had rolled over him previously, and Merya had only grown stronger in the five years since. He meekly surrendered his higher title, though he still retained the Chiefdom or Jersika. Nuyat granted the Chiefdom and High Chiefdom of Latgale to his son, Çortah, make him liege to Chief Gedere of Jersika as well as two Gedere’s kinsmen, the Chiefs of Talava and Selija. The other five Lettigallian Chiefs became direct vassals to King Nuyat.

With High Chief Çortah of Latgale taken care of, Nuyat looked to his other son Nishkepaz. If he succeeded in his plan to make Parush the next King of Merya, his next eldest son Nishkepaz was in line to become the King of Estonia. In anticipation of that, Nuyat decided to grant him land in Estonia. Nuyat held the the recently acquired Chiefdoms of Saaremaa and Liivimaa, which he planned to grant to Nishkepaz, but he also wanted to grant him a High Chiefdom. He looked at the High Chiefdom of Estonia, currently held by High Chief Varjelemb II, the 5-year old son of the man who had led the revolt that had given Nuyat the Kingdom of Estonia. Varjelemb held the Chiefdom of Ladoga as well as the High Chiefdom of Estonia. Ladoga was not part of the High Chiefdom of Estonia, not even part of Kingdom of Estonia. Nuyat stripped the boy of the High Chiefdom and presented it, along Chiefdoms of Saaremaa and Liivimaa, to his son Nishkepaz.

Nishkepaz took his wife, Irsa ‘the Unfaithful’, and his newborn son, Paksyay, and moved to Liivimaa, as the new High Chief of Estonia. But Nishkepaz would have little time. Within 6 months, he would die of pneumonia, leaving his 1-year old son as the High Chief of Estonia.

While King Nuyat had been trying to take care of his children’s future, his siblings’ future had run out. His half brother Syrka finally succumbed to the great pox and died in Kostroma, his long unhappy life was over and he was finally at peace. His other half brother, Kichay, was also at peace, but not in a good way. His liege, High Chief Brun ‘the Monster’ had tried to revoke Naro-Fominsk, from Kichay, but he had refused and revolted. After almost two years of war, the revolt was over and Chief Kichay was in Brun ‘the Monster’s’ dungeon. There he would stay until his death. His son, Nuyat’s nephew, Deryab, would inherit the Chiefdom of Naro-Fominsk. Kichay had managed to preserve the title for his son and deny it to ‘the Monster’, but at a mortal cost.

King Nuyat was staggered by so much loss in such a short time, his wife, both his brothers and and one of his sons all gone two years. He had first turned to Asiya for comfort but she soon became pregnant and had little time or energy to care for Nuyat, so instead Nuyat disappeared for long stretches into the Forest, following rumors of a fabled White Bear.

While King Nuyat was gone on his prolonged hunting trip, High Chief Brun successfully liberated part of Perm from the Khagan of Bughid. Chief Vladislav of Toropets, the old warrior who had led the Meryans to victory in several of the recent wars, passed away, his son Kardaz became the new Chief of Toropets, and Nuyat’s daughter, Tetyava ‘the Merry’, arranged a betrothal between her oldest daughter, Megurka, and the new Chief of Toropets, after Megurka gave birth to a bastard son named Moksha. Local levys from Nuyat’s holdings in Luki and Polotsk were rallied by Commander Robin to put down an Illmeniian peasant revolt in Pskov. Commander Robin put down the revolt and discovered the cause was War Chief Paksyut extorting money from the peasants until they could give no more and saw no other choice other than revolt. Usually Paksyut’s long time ally on the Council, High Chief Sarak of Bjarmia, the Voice of Merya, would have helped him sweep the evidence of this corruption under the carpet, but High Chief Sarak passed away while the revolt was being waged, and War Chief Paksyut’s corruption was revealed. Paksyut was locked away, awaiting Nuyat’s return and judgement. And finally, Asiya gave birth to her third child, a daughter she named Rashida.

King Nuyat returned only a few weeks after the birth of his newest daughter, and he did not return alone. At his side came a young woman of striking beauty and keen wit who was also very pregnant. King Nuyat was visibly renewed with a gleam in his eye and bounce in his step that belied his 55 years. He was a man in love, though some say bewitched, by this Mastorava of the Wilds. There were rumors she had brewed magic love potions in her hut in the Forest and had ensnared him, some of the crazier theories even suggested, that she was the White Bear he had sought, transformed into into a girl in the Wilds. But others argued if Nuyat was truly bewitched, he would have made Mastorava his new Queen instead of just taking her as one of his concubines. Nuyat himself, said the White Bear was still out there, and he had not given up on it.

Whatever had happened deep in the Forest, it had done King Nuyat good and he was now back and ready to take up his duties. He first stripped Paksyut of his position as War Chief, and then found replacements for Paksyut and the late the High Chief Sarak. Another Sarak, High Chief Sarak of Kargopol was chosen as the new Voice of Merya and High Chief Tylemache 'Ironside' of Veps became the new War Chief.

Then Nuyat visited his son, Çortah, the High Chief of Latgale. Çortah had given Nuyat a new grandchild, Siyamka. With her birth, his son Çortah had founded a new dynasty, the Çortahid dynasty, which would also carry the bloodline of Erziya ‘the Bold’. When he returned, Nuyat arranged a second marriage for his daughter, Anava, to young Chief Yar of Hålogaland, this would allow her to return to Hålogaland and care for her two children she had left there following the death of her first husband.

Finally, Nuyat came to his Council and asked them to bring him up to date on the world outside of Merya.

A busy time preparing for a (hopefully) seamless succession. It's good to see the King's new concubine has put him in such high spirits. 55 is not to old for him to have many achievements waiting for him.

Pretty heavy series of domestic matters.

Of course perhaps she is a very clever witch who realises being Queen would arouse open hostility instead of just comment.

It's good to see Cortah get a good position despite his birth, he seems a good enough sort.
Unfortunate business in Estonia, first appearing as a tyrant to take a title from a child and then ending up with a child High Chief anyway.
Looking forward to the update on the outside world!
