The Reign of Meilyr Pendragon Chapter I
Lived 970 – 1011
King of Wales 988 – 1011
King of Ireland 988 – 1011
King of Scotland 988 – 1011
Duke of Albany 988 - 1011
Many did not expect Meilyr to come to the throne at such a young age, but the abrupt death of his father forced him onto the throne. Meilyr was equally skilled in both diplomacy and warfare, with some skill in stewardship. He was a man who embodied no negative traits, and would continue to take Wales from strength to strength during his reign.
A few days after he ascended to the throne, the marriage that his father had prepared came to fruition; Meilyr was married to Beorngyth the third child of the King of England. In truth this marriage was more for her weak claim on England then anything else but the marriage was not loveless and they did have children.
In March 989, Meilyr traveled to Rome on a pilgrimage. He was moved by the holy ground he walked on and became a Zealot bent on doing the work of God.
Two years would pass with peace within the three kingdoms; it was a time of peace and prosperity but also for building and consolidation. Many believed during this period that Meilyr was gearing for war with England, in truth the chances of him pressing the claim of his wife were slim to the fact it was a weak claim, as such he was preparing to conquer counties one by one.
In order to break the dullness of peace, Meilyr arranged for a grand hunt to be organised in Gwynedd. It took place over two months and allowed the King some respite from ruling, records from the period suggest that he slew many hares during the two months and faced down a boar with a spear and slew it without a scratch.
On the 9th November, one day after the hunt had ended Meilyr found out that his wife was pregnant and next year on the 10th June a son was born named Rhys. In the following year in May 993 Beorngyth was pregnant again and two months later a daughter was born named Gwen. With the birth of a son and daughter the reign of Meilyr was off to a fine start, but would he be able to begin pushing into England and form a empire, or would England maintain its independence…
Just a quick chapter to get the reign started, in truth pressing Beorngyth's claim will be difficult unless I am very lucky, so I will probably start taking over English counties through claims. Comments and criticism are welcomed.
