World Interlude 975

Interlude 975
Rhys sighed and lay down his quill, having finally finished the chapters on King Elis. It had been a long few days, still the chapters were written and so Rhys decided to head down the local tavern for a pint. However as he was leaving he was blocked in the doorway by the king’s arrogant idiotic son Arthur. Arthur in front of his father was a fawning man always agreeing with what he said, outside his company however he was an arrogant and cruel man and treated the lower classes and outsiders with distain. “Ah my lord what brings you to my chambers” “my father has sent me to examine your work on the maps of the year 975” Arthur replied his shrill voice dripping with contempt and arrogance. “Yes is this because the King cannot come himself, due to the fact that is currently hiding in his chambers ever fearful of the protesters outside the gates”? Arthur’s eyes bulged “how could you know about the protesters”? “Because everyone with a spec of intelligence knows that, Rhys replied it’s not every day a king incites a protest by insulting the beard of the town mayor”. “Word travels fast within these walls you idiotic twit”

“Silence Dwarf, screeched Arthur you will not call me names” Rhys goes to his desk, and retrieves his mace from beneath it and rounds on the prince. “AHHH NO PLEASE DON’T DENY ME THE CHANCE TO PROCREATE” screamed Arthur, “insult my height again and I will, now shall we look at the maps” “Yes, of course” the prince was sweating with fear.

The Isles are unified under two main powers, the Pendragons hold Wales, Ireland and Scotland and the house of Wessex holding virtually all England bar the duchy of Lancaster which is independent and the county of Lincoln which is under Pendragon control.

8u6qCHU.png

Moving to Scandinavia, Norway and Denmark has converted to Catholicism. As a result they are turning their sights to pagan Sweden and have been snatched land from the weakened nation. In Finland, the duchy of Finland has been formed and Rus still hold the Karelia duchy.

The lack of an image for Europe makes it difficult to say what is happening [1] but based on textual evidence from the period, West Francia is at war with Aquitaine, East Francia and Lotharingia are stable and the majority of the other kingdoms are at peace.

GEiEdCO.png

In Hispania the Muslims have gained much ground over Christian Rulers with only the Kingdom of Asturias remaining as a potential threat to the Muslims. Christian power is still weak though with a few scatted Christian countries in Spain aside from the kingdom of Asturias.

GQa8WGg.png

In Eastern Europe the Byzantines are at peace, and over the recent years have gained some more territory including Venice and parts of the Kingdom of Croatia. Bulgaria is holding its own as a kingdom despite being on the Emperors doorstep. Italy too is also unified and untroubled by internal strife.

wSuX1eT.png

Here also is a family tree of the Pendragons, though the members are not named.

“You have seen enough I trust my prince” muttered Rhys. “Yes that will do I will inform my father of your progress”, and with that he swept out of the room in a dramatic fashion. Rhys sighed shock his fist at the prince behind his back and went to get his pint.

[1] I tried cropping the Europe image but it always turned out messy, so I tried to describe the situation there in brief.

Sorry it took so long to get this out, schoolwork is the main reason for the Interludes lateness. As such I plan on only doing at least 1 chapter a week. The first Arthur II chapter will be out soon.

The Reign Of King Arthur II Pendragon Chapter I

CTQLVoW.png

Lived 920 - 984

King of Wales 975 - 984

King of Ireland 975 - 984

King of Scotland 975 - 984

Duke of Gwynedd 975 - 984

Duke Of Albany 949 - 984

Arthur’s reign is regarded with a mixture of hatred or acceptance by both his vassals and his successors. It was a reign full of ups and downs but first we need some background.

Arthur early life was befitting of a prince, he was tutored by his father and became skilled in the art of war, and on his coming of age, was given control over the dukedom of Albany and three of the four counties within said duchy bar Gowrie which remained under the control of his father. He was married to Aliyah Sajarid, a catholic woman from Hispania with a towering intellect. She had 4 children Marwenna, who died sickly in 957 at age 2. De Heuwant who died of slow fever in 955 at the age of 12. Hellawys who survived childhood and Lylr who is the current heir of Wales. Arthur also had a bastard by Ysabil Duchess of Moray, who was called Elis who started a cadet dynasty.

YHpM5LC.png

MZdqu6e.png

Arthur himself was infirm and sickly when he took the throne, yet hanged on long enough to leave his mark on history. Shortly after taking the throne he arranged for assassins to kill his first grandson Arthur, simply put he wished for his second son Meilyr who was married to a princess of England to take the throne. He was successful in slaying him but was found out and dammed a Kinslayer. Luckily for Arthur shortly after this, the current Pope Urban II granted a absolution for his Kinslaying, but his wider family still despised him.

VHxkdNk.png

X4fcx4I.png

qGBPqRW.png

In March 978 Arthur called for a grand tournament to be held to improve vassal relations. In truth this was one of the most violent tournemants of the period, with Elis the bastard getting his arm hacked off and the death of Roen Mach Finnachta from a blow to the head. But overall it was a good tournament with Casnar, Meurig, and Fargan Evans taking 1st second and 3rd place.

udIPlwN.png

Tragically following this in the year of 979 Arthur infirmity would turn to utter incapability and his son Lylr would become regent.

yFgmRhq.png

Two years would pass before a rebellion by Anglo Saxons in the county of Lincoln in 981. The retinue was combined with the Kings Welsh levies to amass a host of nearly 6000 men. The Welsh army engaged the rebels at Gainsborough near Lincoln. This is a significant battle as it was one of the first to be documented during this period along with the other battle in the rebellion the battle of St Cuthbert. Here is the account written by Owen, a monk and scholar during this period.

60AyAWQ.png

3IZq4Qz.png

The Battles of Gainsborough and St Cuthbert – a documented account by Owen the Monk - December 987

The battle of Gainsborough took place over several days in September 987 on a flat grassy plain near Lincoln. 5500 Welshman fought against roughly 3000 Anglo Saxon rebels. The welsh were lead by three dukes, the Duke of Moray Gilpatrick, held the left flank. Pwydion the Duke of Munster held the centre and Holmger the Duke of the Isles held the right flank. The Saxons were lead by peasantry unskilled in the art of war. In terms of Army composition the Saxon army was made up of a combination of light infantry, archers and light cavalry. The Welsh by contrast was made up of a wide mixture of unit types, with the largest types consisting of heavy infantry, archers and light cavalry which numbered at least over 1000 men. They also had command of 200 heavy cavalry armed with swords and lances, a rarity on the isles at the time.

The battle began with several archer volleys, the Saxon archers were outmatched due to the training and skill of the Welsh archers whose arrows inflicted 600 causalities at a loss of 71 of their own men. The Saxon infantry formed a shield wall and advanced with their light cavalry moving behind them in support. The infantry forces of the Welsh also formed a wall and moved to engage them. Both armies moved with caution across the plain, until the Saxons perhaps eager to break the Welsh as quickly as possible charged at them while still holding the shield wall.

The Saxons collided with the Welsh with a sound like thunder and an all-out melee began. It soon became apparent that the lightly armored Saxon infantry were losing ground, the well armed and armored welsh infantry were pushing them back with both skill and sheer numbers. The Saxon cavalry moved into help their comrades but were intercepted by the Welsh cavalry of the right flank led by Holmger. The mixture of heavy and light horsemen slammed into the side of the Saxon cavalry and inflicted sizable casualties before the Saxons fled. The rest of the army broke and fled but most were cut down by the Welsh cavalry, still a sizable number were able to flee the field.

Welsh loss that day stood at 179 men compared to the roughly 1900 men that the Saxons lost which was well over half of their army. The 800 or so Saxons fled but they were all slaughtered near St Cuthbert a month later in October ending the Lincoln Rebellion.

x19Ro4G.png

Arthur would die of his incapability in 984 at the age of 63, his son Lylr would become King and continue the Pendragon Legacy. Arthur's reign was regarded as mixed by both his vassals and the peasantry. Despite his Kinslaying he was effective at ruling and only experienced one rebellion during his reign. Had he come to power earlier perhaps he would have been able to surpass his father.

So 3 of the four kings I have played have ended up incapable. :) Anyway here is a chapter, Lylr is next so I will start his reign today. Also do you guys like the documented battle idea? I might throw them in every few chapters just to spice things up if the idea is well received . Comments and Criticisms are welcomed. I'll try and get the starting chapter of Lylr reign up today.

For a minute there, I thought your heir was named after a peninsula! :D Llŷr is a much more fitting name.

I enjoyed the battle description, so I'd happily see more in the future. It's always nice to see some fleshing out of the material the game gives you, and injecting life into the battle numbers is a great way of doing so.

As ever, I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing what the next king can accomplish.

I did not name him when I he was born (he was not in my court) and yes the name is much better. Cheers for the feedback on the battle description, I just wanted to flesh out my chapters a bit more. I'll try and play over the next few days but CK2 has gone a bit buggy and mixed up the Coa's for duchys and kingdoms. started a thread to try and fix it, but I might just start playing without it being fixed TBH still it is quite funny seeing the Wales CoA as the CoA for Cornwall. :)

I moved from Chenderit in September to Sibford near Banbury to do my A Levels. 10 grand a year but I get longer holidays and the teaching is so much better.

Aha a public school boy-I should have guessed lol :p

And yes the documented battle idea is great-spices up the story-well done!

Fantastic progress - and yes, I'm another fan of your battle description. I've been trying to do something similar in mine, and I very much enjoy the added details you've inserted as flavour.

At least you write well enough that you don't need a battle description. :) my writing is clunky at the best of times.

UPDATE (PLEASE READ)

So loading up the game after the death of Arthur II and now the map looks like this...

sc2yT9U.png

Yep the duchy and kingdom CoA's are messed up. I'll still play the save but people have told me on the bug forum there is no fix. :( and this is everywhere on the map. First major problem with CK2 in terms of bugs. (I have no idea how it occurred) if anyone know of a fix I would appreciate it. Not to mention the name of some Kingdoms are different along with some county names.

Just to be clear I have uninstalled CK2 and removed the folder from my documents but it did not work. I think something is wrong with the Wales divided mod but I do not know what and if it is not used to run the save the game will not work properly due to the mod adding counties and editing game files.

Thanks

Saxon

1. Did you accidentally update?

2. Do you have an autosave of the game?
