Greetings all,

I am sure quite a few of you are enjoying Hearts of Iron 2 as I speak. :D I do have a question though, before I might consider on purchasing the game. Is The Pacific War any good in Hearts of Iron 2?

In Hearts of Iron 1, I just could not get on with it at all. Not really too much island fighting and very few naval battles. I wonder, in Hearts of Iron 2, is it really like the true Pacific War experiance? I really want to have a nice few naval battles before preparing my long awaited, bloody invasion of The Pacific Islands and soon, Australia and Burma. ;) Also, will the artificial intelligence put much of a fight up for the islands aswell?

Anyway, I look forward to your replies.

I have just arrived form my first two hours of pacific fighting (The Japanese attacked me in November 1941)...and...there are battles everywhere! In the air and on the waves. So far I have sunk about 8 ships, and they have sunk about 10 of mine (mainly destroyers and a couple of CA.s). I was prepared...so they won´t be invading anything important. I hope (things overall doesn´t look so great for the allies if you look at the world map, and for some reason Germany seems to be leaving SU alone...dunno know what they are up to, but unless they start slugging it soon I wil have a hard time invading the continent).
Anyway...I have had a couple of neat carrier engagements (four of mine five of his) around the island of Guam al ready. I won both, but without sinking any carriers. If only I had put some naval bombers there!

If the AI puts up resistance for the islands...? Well...they have troops stationed there, and the naval AI is great! So I think I must wait a year or so before I can start doing some serious island hopping....

cant tell for sure but your fleet seem much more important this time around.
And you better make your fleet strong, in HOI1 there was really no need for that as you could win anyway.Naval combat are brutal and over very quickly, it seems fun but if you aint paying attention you might miss it ( i did :D ).

Well, the last problem is quite easy to solve - go to your message settings and set all reports about naval engagements to "display in a message box and pause". Presto! I use this neat little feature quite a lot, I don't want to miss a thing! :D

I managed to lose the entire Kriegsmarine in one battle!

it turns out that parking it in the Thames estuary when the RN has 3 carrier fleets nearby isn't such a good idea.

It started as a simple engagement with my fleet vs a small cruiser task force so i concentrated on on Poland. I checked a few game hrs later and found a large number of carrier aircraft buzzing around. and one sinking German cruiser.

Well, i've still got my U-boats!

Alright then, you've all convinced me. My brithday is January 23rd, so I might pre order the game around then. I do look forward to playing at last a "True" Pacific War, with alot of Naval and Air engagments, not too mention island hopping. ;)

Also, one more question. Are there many divisions based in either Singapore or Burma? In Hearts of Iron 1, as Japan, I could take both territories without firing a shot. :( Now, I want to be "Banzai" charging and fighting heavily for these countries. :D

That depends :)

One of the biggest battlescenarios we have is the "Southen Conquest" one. Where you play Japan, UK or USA during the first 9 months of Japanese expansion to take Philippines, Singapore, New Guinea etc.

I've had great fun playing that in co-op MP (1-3 on each nation) with the betas, with large naval campaigns, and island hopping.

As Japan, its all about attacking, and keeping up with a time-schedule to take out as much as possible before the mighty US warmachine deploys more and more resources.
As US/UK its not so much about stopping the Japanese, its more about slowing them down.

Thats quite the challenge versus the AI.. and even harder versus competent players..

And the great fun is that it can be played in about three to five hours...

Thankyou for the information there Johan, you have twisted my arm and I am going to pre order Hearts of Iron 2. :D It sounds great fun and I do like how you have set out "The Southern Conquests" scenario. Just how it happened historically, especially with Japan and it's time constraints. Plus, the amount of time you could be playing the scenario for.........marvellous. ;)
