As mentioned in a previous publication from the Eutopia Ordnance Survey, we will publish not only an overview map of our country, but also province maps in a smaller scale. To finalize this serie the Ordnance Survey need help from out citizens, to point out errors, and provide information about name usage etc.

An extract from the main map of the provinces of Capital District (C.D.) and New Schleswig looks like this:

map_newschleswig_v1.jpg

(For a larger map see here).

What we need is:
- A name for the lake by Eutopia city. The Ordnance Survey has suggested Lake Orange (after the river), but welcome any corrections. We also need a name for the lake west of Gilford.
- Names for the minor rivers. The river Marmel is known, the others aren't. ()
- Names for the mountain ridge to the west.
- There are minor towns/ villages (pop <100000) missing! (I bet there is ;))

I suggest a small town on the border just south of Tabor and north of Phillipeville to be called Borderton.

The Lake near EUtopia city should be called Remnant Lake, to symbolise the ancient cultures once found there (and EUtopia1)

The lake west of Gilford shoud be called Meeting lake, because borders meet there, and it is where the settlers first met the natives of the area, the Qantachut.

The river next to Gilford isn't named? Try the Occidental Thames, or Oriental Mississippi.

Mountain range...The Stonies?

New Schleswig

Seeing as the province was settled heavily by Germans...

Cities:
- Asperg (after a town of the same name in Southern Germany)
- Offenburg (ditto)
- Rastatt (ditto)
- Paderborn (town in Northern Germany)
- Markirch (for the Amish settlement that was discussed a long time ago :); this, too, is an actual city in Germany, and of historical significance to the Amish))
- Weil im Feld (= Hamlet in the Field)
- Ingolfingen (= the place where Ingolf's people dwell; "-ingen" is a Southern German form)
- Neuweiler (= New Hamlet)
- Buchenberg (= Beech Mountain)
- Friedbach (originally Friedebach = Peace/Quietude Brook)
- Entenfurt (= Ducks' Ford)
- Appelhain (= Apple Grove; "Appel" is a Northern German term for apple)

Rivers:
- Sicker (= Trickle)
- Trüb (= Cloudy)
- Blau (= Blue)
- Zausel (= old buffer; based on some local legends about the Man of the River ;))
- Hecker (named after the famous 1848 revolutionary)
- Herwegh (named after the famous 19th century radical poet)

Mountain ridge:
- Alemannians (after the ancient Southern German tribal federation)
- Westerberge (= Western Mountains)
- Dämmerberge (= Dusk Mountains)
- Kauzgebirge (= Screech Owl Mountains)

Capital Disctrict lake

- Lake Roberval (after the 16th century French explorer - I think we could fit a stint in Eutopia into his bio quite nicely :))
- Lake Brule (17th century French explorer; could have had a stop-over in Eutopia as well)
- Lake de Monts (ditto)

Edit: typo/more accurate translation :)

In regards to the lake to the west of Gilford, I suggest the name "Lake Conley' or 'Conley Lake'. This works well with the rivers name, (Conder) and honour the great english explorer, who may have come to EUtopia for a while?;)

I think it is a sad state of affaires when our most esteemed citizens do not know the basics of their fine Eutopian history... :p

Lake Roberval is closer than you think to reality: the town of Roberval is settled near Lac Saint-Jean in Québec.

Étienne Brûlé is rather a poor choice, as he was clearly an explorer of North America (where he lived, became adopted by Natives, etc) and not a high seas explorer such as Verazzano or Cartier, for instance. Verazano is perhaps a better choice.

Ditto for Pierre du Gua de Monts, clearly interested mostly in the fur trade...

Some places could be named after the expeditions - or leaders - of the XVIth - XVIIth century: Lake Thévet (Histoire de la France Antartique), Lake Villegaignon, Lake Coligny, Lake Richelieu, etc. They could also be named for the first inhabitants (a bit like we have here IRL): Lac-aux-Basques, Lac-aux-Malouins, etc

I don't see how any of my suggestions conflict with Eutopia's history, to be honest. :) As to the explorers I mentioned: I'm quite aware that the three of them were active in North America; the point I was trying to make is that we could quite easily adjust their bio to include a fictitious stint in Eutopia. I believe I said as much. ;) Of course, the alternative is to simply invent a couple of Eutopian explorers...

Sorry, I poorly expressed myself. Étienne Brûlé and Pierre du Gua de Monts were not, properly speaking, explorers, as one could define them using EU game parameters. They did not set out on voyages of exploration, etc. Their presence in North America was solely due to their connection with the fur trade, Brûlé because he was captured by Natives, du Gua because he obtained the monopoly there and, as I have noticed (perhaps wrongly), EUtopia does not seem to be a "fur trade" venture. I just found it doubtful that those two would have go out of their way to visit Eutopia for no other reason than exploring, while other explorers, Cartier, Verazano, Giovanni Caboto, are less tied to a particular place (i.e. Canada) and more with the idea of "exploring".

But, hey, it's just me ! :)

Ah, I get it. Thanks for the clarification. :)
