Felt like base EUIII game to me, even the icons for buildings were same as Divine Wind. It may become something interesting after 8-10 DLCs...

Too many missions seem to just hand out cores like candy. Portugal should get trade and colonization missions. Austria should get diplomatic and imperial missions.

Claims, not cores. Big difference. Also, early Portugal should be trying to take Morroco at every opportunity. Portuguese insistence on fighting them is what screwed them over in 1580, when the king died in battle. That said, it shouldn't be easy. In the end, Portugal never managed to do more than take parts of the coast.

Also as Austria mercs are your Friend. Even with the HRE manpower bonus its depleting at an alarming rate so use them for the bazillion small annexing wars you´ll fight. You can afford them without problems. I had 20k mercs running around slapping down minors and still ran a surplus.

I loved the demo. Played as Portugal and Ottomans so far, was a bit confused as Portugal, colonised two provinces in Brazil, took the coast of Morocco and built some ships, that's pretty much it, felt like I wasn't making any progress to be honest... Ottomans on the other hand was a blast, got right into the swing of things. Was racing against the demo clock to annex Egypt, Integrate Crimea and eat the Balkans. Lots of fun.

Can anyone confirm that if you got the trade tab up you will hear a very annoying chatter/churning that is repeating ad infinitum?

To one you reach it by pressing your crest btw.

The only one I've enjoyed very much is the Ottomans. It's not the game's fault, really, I just don't think Venice is a good choice in 1492. Instantly, the Ottomans and Mamluks started making claims on my lands. All I got to do was annex Rhodes and Ragusa. Any big countries I wanted to ally with already had too many relations to ally with me, and Poland, Switzerland, and Bavaria ditched me when the Ottomans declared war on me.
Also, for some reason Dulkadir declared war on the Mamluks for a province owned by the Ottomans. Not really sure how or why, but that's a separate issue.
Anyways, Austria didn't seem too fun because it starts with 66 regiments in one province, so they dissolve almost instantly into a useless pile of soldiers.
I mean, really, if they hadn't been killed off by attrition, I could've probably beat the rebels...if they didn't declare independence almost instantly, anyways.

Played for 95 mins as Austria, conquered some land and vassalised west frisia, had a huge war with France, lost all my armies, bounced back with mercs after france was distracted by a war with spain, managed to take back all the land that France had previously won sieges on, then a 30k doomstack came along and wiped out my troops xD, then got peace by releasing Holland and giving Hainaut to France along with a big tribute. Man that sucked, because right before that i had let a pretender "Johann I Meinl" get the throne due to his good stats, and then had huge peasant revolts and not enough money or troops to deal with it xD, so i called it a day since i need to wait for the full game anyway.

Were all playing the demo, lets hear verdicts!

My take on it

-Looks polished
-Complex UI but better than EU3
-Siege system is awesome
-Diplomatic tree/system awesome
-Music...I hate to have to say it but so far I think the EU3 soundtrack is better. *****edited, ment the EU3 not EU****That said the music I heard when the game loaded was epic. I dont know how many tracks there are but I guess I'll get a more informed view of the music later. (havent played for that long)
-Graphics...it looks very nice but when zooming out... I dont know whats its called in English but perhaps some Scandinavians can translate "stiplede" lines(if you take a long line and cut it into pieces) makes it hard on the eyes to see clear regions. Also the colors are a bit too weak to see clearly when you zoom out. They all seam to be of the same shade.


To sum it up, its awesome and congratulations to Paradox on a GREAT game.

I think the equivalent word you are looking for is "stippled" . But I think the music is a lot better and agree with the rest of what you said.
Still, I hated Europa Universalis 3 with a passion, I think this game is a massive step up.

I just can't win as Venice. Ottomans have the bigger fleet and you get DOW'd by Austria and Ottomans at the same time. I suppose i cna try an improve relations on the Austrians and go above my naval forcelimit...

The Bad:

-- The one really glaring issue with the game is the map. I'm not a fan of the colors, and honestly feel its just a little too hilly. Definitely should be flatter. Not sure what I don't like about the colors, upon reflection, but I just feel they should be far more crisp, or at the very least a shade darker. Also, I feel the coasts are just a tad too smooth in a lot of places. Would have liked to see sharper coasts. That being said, I feel like province borders are ugly, as well, but I've been spoiled by Gigau's amazing map which I absolutely love. <3 Here's hoping his skills make a return to EUIV!

That being said, the map isn't too horrible. However, I will be jumping on the first map mod I see that makes terrain flatter (its cool that Sicily is portrayed as hilly, but it didn't need to be that high, IMO), adds provinces, and changes colors.

The map has already been flattened and cleaned up on 4chan and reddit, just wait for a great mod like SWMH, should be quick.

As for me, the descriptor text in the convert to islam decision is off . It looks like a great game, just wish it was a bit more plodding, my war against the Maya as Portugal was done in seconds.

Also, much as I was disappointed with MotE, it had an amazing combat system. Why get rid of theat?
Also, I dislike the little Spains everywhere all over the map, why not keep "Spanish North Africa" and that kind of labeling?

The 1492 start has some issues (as in Flanders Always Rebelling and can't annex them if I win) but the demo was great. I understand EUIV a lot better than EUIII despite the 200 hours I put on that one. Its smoother, more elegant but just as deep and complex. EUIV from this little glance is going to be the strategy game of the year hopefully.

One weird thing, all lakes are at sea level, and there is this one ugly spot in Peru, Lake Titicaca. A dive to ocean from high mountains is funny looking.

The emperor is automatically called if anyone from outside the empire attacks anyone in the empire. He's also called if anyone inside the empire attacks anyone inside the empire without a casus belli. Whether or not the emperor accepts the call his business, but -25% prestige (think it's 25%) and - Imperial Authority demands a pretty good reason why he's busy.

Right, just didn´t realize Venice is ouside the HRE. Messed that one up. Sorry for complaining.

Unable to access cheat menu (at least the way i knew in EU3) so i could release byzantium as ottomans and play them in the demo... I am not amused!

That said its gonna get some getting used to this new interface and where everything is.Its just as fun as EU3 but with some new toys to play with.

Though im a bit miffed that i cant get venice to join the HRE "Your nation is too large and the Emperor would never allow it?" come on! Thats lame... That will need moding out i believe else how else will we get France into the HRE?

For Austria, I just had to give local autonomy it sucked but it worked.

Although, playing as Portugal, something weird happened: my king died and somehow I lost Ceuta and Casablanca to Morocco. The French/English war ended at the same time and I thought France forced England to make me give these provinces back to Morocco but there was no log about the peace deal.

Any idea what happened?

Just out of curiousity, has it been stated whether this game follow the EU expansion model or the CK2 DLC model?
