Idea slots and technology slots. I find this quite a curious thing, actually. Idea slots encourage players to personalise their nations, which is good, but it leads to a paradoxical situation: I want to focus on trade, so I pick diplomatic ideas that require diplomatic MP. Thus, to advance my ideas, I need diplomatic MP, and that means that I can't spend them on diplomatic technology. I'm not really playing a militaristic game though, so I have loads of military MP, and spend that on military technology. Thus I, as a trading nation, end up with poor trade technology - but better military technology than a country that does lots of fighting and has military ideas! This really does seem like a backwards situation to me, and I think that it's because EU4 has money/economics and MP the wrong way round, if you see what I mean.

This is completely true. I think technology should come back to being dependant on money. Or maybe a mix of both... I don't really know

Appart from that and some other small problems, the game is AWESOME!!! (just so you know)

I still don't see how 90% of the game is built around the power currency and you have hardly any control on how much you gain that. Why do we get computer-assigned monarchs when they're making or breaking our game?

Do we get to have random monarchs at least? Some countries are doomed as the game progresses otherwise.

Monarchs are random, though I have to agree I am a bit leery about how much impact random chance has. I guess over a full game it will all average out and the player just has the make the best use of the good ones and mitigate the bad ones. We'll just have to see how it plays.

Ah, I love the demo. Great job Paradox! I never played an EU title before, but with my HoI and CK experience I figured I'd just jump in, and it went... okay. Love the different feel of the game so far. I also did the tutorial and that helped me understand a few things better (e.g. how to increase your trade power). I'm still unclear on lots of things though:

What trade nodes should I place my merchants at? The ones nearest to Venice (playing as venice) or the most valuable ones?
Where can I see a list of a country's owned provinces? As a CKII player I really need this list :D
What is a personal union, how does that work? How does claiming someone else's throne work, how big has the difference in prestige to be? Can that happen to the player?
Exploration was explained pretty sparsely, but I'll have to play the demo a bit more I think.

Also I'm not sure how to expand as venice when all around me the HRE lies whose emperor is looking at my provinces longingly...

Looking forward to get my preorder in a few days!

I played Portugal and had a blast. I think the choices we have to make are much more important. We wont really see it too much over the course of 22 years, but I think I made a huge boo boo taking over 4 provinces in Morocco as they too so long and were so expensive to fricking core! Im sure I would have seen me fall 2 tech levels behind europe in admin at least.

Music is amazing, love the new AI. My only concern is that colinazation seems to be very strong as an alternative to conquering. No over extension, easy to core, easy to place in one trade area at a whim. Whereas war is now expensive in terms of the monarch points it drains.

I agree. The problem with big ticket tech costs is that they are delayed gratification. You have to deliberately skip a lot of cool stuff now to tech up.

Also from my whole 30mins of play I agree that you seem to have very little to spend mil points on, but then again I was getting it slower. I had tons of diplo points to spend on tech and quite a lot of admin points but that went on cores, stability etc....

Enjoying it so far, getting owned as Venice. Seems a lot more fun and complex than it did in the videos/streams, which is a good thing :)
Agreed. Turks got my but kicked in Mediterranean and the Balkans.

I will like to wait for the actual game release to make comments on a game features, good and bad sides. But overall, demo is great, and I think the whole game will be a true awesomeness. Great job, PDS.

I thought of this when I was watching quill18's videos and it does seem as though it might be a weakness in the design. You end up with a lot of points in areas you're not interested in pursuing. You haven't quite convinced me it's related to money, though.

But I'll reserve judgement until the full game comes out.

c...c..cant wait !! really looking forward to it :)

im new to the Eu series so the random monarchs dont bother me. i like random elements. especially in games like this
but i agree with the idea/technology points thing. it could be a design flaw that you need to spend the points on ideas and techs alike. but i want to try out the full game before judging

I don't know, how becomes Spain, because needs parts of Aragon. But begins as a leader of personal union with Aragon.

Creating Spain should require Castile and Aragon be in union, or one of the two not exist and the other holding certain provinces. In the former case, creating Spain should annex/inherit the lesser union country. Having them co-exist is silly.

By the way, how do you get France to make peace? I got dragged into the Breton War of Independence and am now the alliance leader, but no matter what I offer them (Calais, Hainaut, giving up some of my claims, etc.) they refuse, even if it's well over 100 warscore. I also don't get why the war is called that, when the war goal seems to be France taking back Calais. Brittany don't seem to be involved whatsoever.

The Castile Spanish decision likely has to do with having Aragon as a vassal, I'd imagine (have x provinces controlled or controlled by vassal).

Just did a Portugal game right to the end. I'm loving this iteration of the series. Still can't figure out trade too well, not sure where my light ships are best used, whether to concentrate them, or anything. The DD and the tooltips only implied to me that it makes the node more attractive if it's safer, so I used two in Africa in the hopes that Cape trade would become more valuable this way (compared to Sinai trade). I don't know what the results were. Most of my light fleet was protecting trade in Seville. Once again, I have no idea how that would have gone if I put my fleets elsewhere, concentrated them all on Kongo (as opposed to one in Mauretania and one in Ivory Coast), or anything like that, but I like the idea that these might be valid strategies and it's very stimulating to learn this and try new things.

My Ottoman game had been peaceful, but this one wasn't. I noticed that when two allies go to war, you still have to refuse one of them after you accept from the other; I thought that was weird. Had to lose 3 stability to attack England with Spain, and then another -25 prestige because I guess England still wanted me in the war. I conquered Kongo, that was the only war I started. But I did end up at war quite a few times, and even lost all of my armies to a Spanish stack early on and watched them carpet my provinces. Why is it that I can refuse to negotiate under the war leader? Does this mean that if peace is made, I'll still be at war? Or is it just like an 'easy-mode' button?

I like it. Even the music, shockingly enough. (I can be really picky about that.)

Really enjoying the demo so far, although having trouble finding time to play it between getting my CK2 conversion game ready and life! I quite like the map/colours, but I guess that's all down to personal preference. I found the tutorial to be quite good and I really appreciate the 'hints' mode. Can't comment on much until I get more time with it, at which point the game will probably be released. Also, excellent music!
