Actualy, it seems like game imitate life. There was one french king, that was also king of poland, for short period of time.
Poland giving Henry Valois a deadline to return to the Commonwealth or have the office declared vacant is not really the same as him remaining the King of Poland.

Either that or you painting a big target on the backs of everyone upstream, but that's a really, really long term project.

Not really. The AI targets high-value nodes. If you collect in several places at once, you can make sure none of your nodes have too much trade passing through them, which means the AI is much more likely to leave you alone. Even in a human vs human situation, it's very difficult to build a pipeline back to Europe if your rival has put collection fleets all over it.

Not strange at all, in my Burgundy is stronk game they would occasionally send a trade fleet of over 80 ships and decimate my economy. The only recourse I had was to put an equally large fleet either in Boudreaux or London

Naturally I picked the second option.
I had that event as France, with my King being 63 years old (Charles VII) I chose the first option as I was Papal controller and such and thought it was good roleplaying.
He got an heir and died within a year. I had a regency council from 14 December 1576 to 1 May 1591 for Louis XI.

After loading a save I had lot's of problems with armies of size 0 being in weird places. They would always have a leader but no regiments and unable to disband or remove the leader. Moving them and merging them with existing armies would solve the problem.
