Actually, I meant rather things like Breton Scotland and that wonderful Otto-free Anatolia. Byzzies stayed Orthodox. Kiev got Muslim though.
Could very well be a religious rebellion that got out of hand and then some reconquest.

I don't know I just never witnessed Byzantium surviving,let alone thriving like this. The best that happened in any of my games was a Sunni Greek Epirus holding most of Greece (usually even that would be a short lived state)

The great grey mass in Russia is Kazan. Egypt (!) is a monster. León and Catalunya exist and both have colonies (León is the Purple in the Caribbean and Catalunya has the two territories in S. America). Also, Kanem Bornu... I mean, the hell?! And Byzantium is winning a war against Qara Qoyunlu, so they might grow even MORE. Purple Phoenix ftw!

I once had a Sunni Byzantium that emerged from rebels in Sunni Bulgaria. Was quite funny, they became a vassal of Ottomans later and broke free, conquered into Anatolia, were beaten back by 3PM Ottomans, Mamluks and Candar and lost Greek territories to Crete and Naples. They were around until the mid-18th century, then the reinvigorated Ottomans finally conquered Constantinople. Their joy was short-lived though as I cleaned up the mess and took the city for my vassal Croatia a few years later. Still, it was quite memorable.

France got a PU over Scotland and integrated them. Same happened with Brittany in Ireland...
A bit later, Castille integrated León via PU and they are now the unquestionable biggest colonial power of the world.
Kazan wants to become Sunni Russia, so they are colonizing Siberia right now.

Notice Nevers and Wallachia as well.
I did notice those two. Rather annoying Wallachia isn't allowed to form Romania, because ERE still exists.

Short-lived Greek states (Sunni or Orthodox) are not uncommon. Epirus, Morea, Achaea, etc. Byzantium is usually dead and buried by 1500 I agree. I have had one game where it survived and the Ottomans didn't (rebellions plus Karaman and Candar kicking its backside). Otts having an unlikely unfortunate accident early is probably a precondition for its survival.

This world is incredible. One of the best I have ever seen in this game.
Let me rate the coolest stuff from it from place 10 to 1.
10) Finland alive by 1812 and together with Norway killing Sweden.
9) Persia and Egypt replace Ottomans and Timurids
8) Eastern empires of - out of all possible tags - Gwalior, Ava and Yi.
7) It is physically impossible for AI to clean up HRE better (except integrating it ofc)
6) Out of all Rus states possible, RYAZAN wins.
5) Badass Wallachia!
4) Total victory of Tatar hordes with this decent GH and incredible Kazan
