OK, long story short: I put EUIV in observe mode and went to do other things. When I came back I started touring the world and of all the bizarre things that had happened in my absence (Scotland owning England, Byzantium owning Balkans, Mamluks owning Ottomans, Hungary being Orthodox) the most crazy one was Japan. It's 1516 and Europeans havent set foot in Africa, neither have Japanese set foot in Europe. Bug? Or maybe it's coded in - I expect anything from this game now.

Did you check any later start date prior to starting that game? It's a running hypothesis that that may be the source of the weirdness.And I imagine that this might be one of the things that can trigger that bug:
