The top left of the lower screen says he has westernized.
No it's not. That's my technology screen, as in, The Hansa. It's showing how many years ahead of time the tech is and how much it would cost with a bunch of tech cost reductions that Russia doesn't get.

If Russia had westernized, the Eastern Tech symbol in the top part would be different, right?

Non western tech groups can also store more Monarch points, 20% more in the case of eastern. So whilst it would have cost more than 999 points for him, he could also store more points (the same proportion). Considering he has a 6-6-6 ruler, it is not that surprising that he has kept up in tech.

Yeah, and as Russia, he's probably got the funds to hire high-level advisors as well. With some careful management and a bit of luck, it's possible for almost any country (short of sub-saharan/new world) to keep up in tech with the west. For example, in my recent Ayutthaya campaign, I managed to keep military tech parity with the western world up through the 1500s, despite being in the chinese tech group. Of course, my admin and diplo techs were (and still are) much further behind, but military tech is all that really matters in the end, and it's the easiest to keep saved up, too. Heck, in my Najd campaign I was actually forced to buy tech 6-8 years ahead of time for a little while because my MMP were maxed out and I didn't have any other real use for the points.

Balooshistan too op plz nerf!!

I note I had nothing to do with it, except conquering the Uzbeks, maybe.
Baluchistan had been really OP in this game, gobbling down the Timurids and north of India, vassalizing Khorasan and the Mughals, allying Ottomans and even Ming. They managed not to be conquered by Spain who only took a few provinces from them.
I use to see a strong Baluchistan at least once in every game. But this one beats them all!

The Iberians are as expansive as usual, France is very strong and so is Sweden. I just piled on because, you know, an excuse to go take land off Russia. Castile, France, and Sweden are all sieging the European half of Russia, and Portugal is a bit suicidal, they're landing in Great Britain. Don't anyone mess with Japan though, Russia has 60K troops there (and Castile has a fleet keeping them there). The whole situation is hilarious considering how much of a thorn in my side Russia has been. :p

Edit: Here is a screenshot of my view of the war. As you can see a lot of the Europeans are missing. As an added bonus, I present "Turki Billah". My original two diplomats have this name, and now I have a general with the same name. Either this is the "John Smith" of the Najd world or it's the "Clark Kent" of the Najd world, there's just no other way!

Let's just call him "Alexander".

Which will mean that he's already been elected thus "Alexander Sextus". Then who's the Cardinal? Wait, no! It can't be...

This just happened to my Jihad run. More of a "utterly enraging screenshot" than a strange one, but the world must know. Things were going great; managed to keep the ottomans from fighting me, just finished westernizing, making lots of progress. Then I got a regency, but my heir wasn't so bad (3-4-3 or something) and I needed time to pay off loans and stuff anyway. Then portugal attacked my african colonies and I got stackwiped. Then this event happened...

4Gpb7I8.png

The kicker? This new guy is only 21 years old.

Well, that was a fun run.

Well, that was a fun run.

That happened to me just before my heir came of age. It's not game over!

Sadly there's no way to get one of the cardinals elected as new pope.
In this case it might be a good a thing. ;)

Spain has finally conquered Iberia
Finally an EU3 throwback in EU4! :D
