The AI restored the Merovingians to the Francian throne. A title that had been taken over by Charlie before the game start, and only one Merovingian remained alive at game start (with a claim). Surprisingly often, the AI forms a faction to restore him to the throne.Could someone please explain? I'm missing what happened...

And with some console work you can then play as the merovingian King. And if you make Karlomans Kingdom (middle francia?) it then becomes Austrasia. The AI restored the Merovingians to the Francian throne. That's actually not that bizarre - the Pope hired on the Pecheneg company but didn't pay them, and they revolted. That used to be a common occurrence a few patches back.So this a thing in my game.
