They should really improve the interplay between the society and holy order branches of the Hashashin.

Maybe you weren't the intended target? Maybe it wasn't the hashashin? Perhaps both? Plenty of explanations here.
A few things from my indo-norse run
Amalfi apparently has a sunni berber patrician, who decided to conquer Rome.
The shia caliphs kept declaring war on me, even though they never had even 1000 soldiers.
Two mercenary states here. Catalan band has held northern Italy and Sardinia for about two centuries now, while France apparently has had very bad luck with mercenaries (again!) and is held by Navarres Band. Also pictured: Independent aztec Paris.
Or, as my kingdom was in northern India, actually getting to me.

It's ironic how there can be no crusade to reclaim Rome since the top liege of Amalfi is Christian. And I'm impressed by those mercenary states.
In my last game I tried out what happens if you set the strength of provincial revolts to 4x strength (with other words: 8K angry peasants). Hilarity ensued.
First we have a Cathar uprising in roughly the right place, though several centuries early. That was pretty cool.
Next we have a Waldensian uprising that split Mercia in half. And yes, that's viking England. Hlafdan Whiteshirt was king until a few months ago.
And last but not least we have the man who kicked the pope out of Rome. I'm guessing the peasants didn't like being taxed. In any case, the Papacy is now landless.

I was the King of Abyssinia. My realm was not so large, but I had guided my people well and helped defend against the threats on both sides. In a kingdom so small and isolated, there aren't a lot of genuine friends to be made, so one ought to cherish those one finds.
So it was no surprise that I took it hard when my dear friend, the Duke of (...I forget) passed on. Rueful and scattered were the thoughts in my popup message. "I always thought I would be the first to go," ruminated the grief-stricken king. "Never again will I hear his jolly laugh..."
"Say," thought the player behind the screen. "I wonder how he died, anyhow."
So I checked.

How true to life. In many cases ones with depression work hard to make others laugh instead. Example: Robin Williams.

I had to post it. This guy (a single tribal chief of Lubeck) was able to smash down whole Saxony in one war.
Looks like he was the leader of a peasant revolt before that. He probably used his revolt troops + tribal army in a subjugation war. If someone attacked him he could've also had some devout defenders on hand or whatever they're called.

What is it about Azerbaijan? It's part of K of Persia, but the Georgians and Armenians just can't resist going for it, and that's when the Sunni Caliphate takes notice of all those Christians camped out to the north. Well in many of my Byzantine games that's how it goes anyway.
