I agree since it often leads to having kings of England with the Frankish culture, since Robert de Normandie's (the heir of William the Conquerer) often gets sons with Frankish culture.

Don't spam please.

I believe Normandy was turned Frankish in some beta patch and I think we had a reason for doing so.

EDIT: Oh yes, aug 15th beta.

Where can the rationale be found?

The scenario people changed it because the majority of the populace was Frankish (french), not Norman (viking). Apparently the culture is based on a simple majority of the people, not the rulers' culture.

Of course by that logic provinces like Boulogne and Liege should not be frankish, since francification of the dutch populace didn't begin until after the CK period.

Umm all normans were basically an offshot of franks. And who cares about there geneology? Im pretty sure everyone there considerd themself norman (unless they had just moved in) I mean...in that rational then all of england should be saxon and so on....

 It is? Ok then let's change my excample ;) all of Italy (naples etc) should be italian! Either way there's no point for putting a norman culture if normandy doesn't even get it. Ive read that the normans had no lasting effects to england except language and centrelization (as in no lasting culture) therefore if normandy doesn't get it...and england has no right either...then why is it even a culture  ?

Norman culture is to give us namelist including fancy names like Bohemund, Roger and Humbert, all in same list. In other words, the naming practices of Sicilian Normans weren't Italian or French and neither the English Normans used the more modern variants found in English list early on. So it all boils up to the most important thing about Cultures in CK, name lists.

Still think it's foolish not to have normandy...norman. That's like having india chinise etc. Were the naming practices in normandy...umm norman or predominantly frank?

The Normans in game terms are Frankicised Vikings, that's what they were at the point of the game's start, else they'd be Norweigian or Danish or something like that.

That would be an interesting thing to research, all in the interest of more historical CK, now wouldn't it? ;)

The problem is that the Normans were "French" in as much as the concept of the French nation existed, else kings of England wouldn't have been required to swear alliegance to the kings of France for owning them.

Normans were a type of French, same as Occitan was a type of French. And this problem would make researching the Frenchness of these areas difficult. What exactly do you mean by French?

If anything the Norman characters should be French and the Norman provinces should be Norman, beacause I suspect that the common people were less French than the aristocracy.

Looks like we're about to head down the "all provinces will be given icelandic culture in 1.06" path....

Didn't we have a huge culture discussion thread that effectively proved that regardless of what changes you make to the cultural setup in CK, at least 33% of the people will disagree vehemenetly with any particular province's suggestd new culture, 33% will be strongly in favour of it, and another 33% will want it to be something else altogether (and the remaining 1% want it to be icelandic). As I recall, that thread was a hotbed of dispute and arguments (and forced me to issue a number of official warnings) and was then eventuially sent off to the S&M forum (for once, that abbreviation seems oddly appropriate ;)) where some 14 months later it is still subject to cyclic crusades of special cultural interest groups.

I would urge people to leave the current culture setup mostly alone, and concentrate on mostly looking at changes to the spread/conversion thereof instead.

That is because there is no real discussion in that thread right now, not compared to how it was :)

There was rule that changes to the cultural setup could not be discussed in the public beta forum, I checked earlier this day the rules and saw that all those rules were gone.

Maybe it would a good idea to put that rule in to work again ?

Leave cultural setup to the players themselves in their own mod and keep the cultural setup in the official patch as it currently is.
