Nordheim of Bavaria

bavaria10665ts.jpg

Bavaria and her environs in December 26, 1066 (Demense - Dark Green, Vassals - Light Green, Holy Roman Empire - Green; although I doubt you needed that)

Before this begins, I'm just dedicating my first post for a little introduction. Indeed, my aim is to follow the Crusades, and carve out my own little kingdom, not in Jerusalem, but in Egypt. And surely, not only the story of its birth, but its story up until the era of EUII, until which point, I would intend to continue. The idea is to follow its history, and hopefully enter into quite a bit of the other Crusader states, such as Jerusalem, for dominance over the states.

Anyway, I may or may not making this one of AARs where the gamefiles are edited, if only for the story, such as taking the numerous plots of land where the Kingdom of Jerusalem is, and putting them under one control, just to make things more interesting, however, I will avoid aiding myself.

I must say, however, I do think this, my third (or second, depending on how you count it) CK AAR could be a bit difficult, considering managing to take the provinces needed could be difficult.

Anyway, settings are:

Aggressiveness: Coward
Difficulty: Normal

Anyway, I shall get started soon...

Alright, sorry about the delay. Got caught in an experimental game as someone else. ;)

Anyway, time for a little more intro.

ottovonnordheim5kk.jpg

Otto von Nordheim was part of a family of Saxon counts of Nordheim, but rose to become Duke of Bavaria from Agnes d'Aquitaine, wife of the like Emperor Heinrich III. His achievements thus far included taking part in the Empire's goverment during the minority of Heinrich IV, a successful expidition into Hungary in 1063, and the involvment to settle a papal schism. However, over time, he would be known for founding a family to create one of the most important Crusader states.

His wife was Richenza von Bonngau, daughter of the late Duke of Swabia, Otto II, who was himself grandson, through his own mother, of the Emperor Otto II.

His wife bore him with six wonderful children, three boys and three girls, one of whom, Ethelinde, was married to an Italian courtier, Guelph Welf, the eldest son of Azzo d'Este, Duke of Milano. The boys, in order of age, were Heinrich, Siegfried, and Kuno, while the remaining daughters, in age, were, Ida and Mechthild.

With three boys, dividing his lands amongst them would be very difficult, something which would later prove very fateful to one of his boys.

For now, Otto had to get to the task of assembling his court. His son in law, Guelph Welf, a man proud like Otto himself, but also lustful and zealous, was a very good warrior, and Otto made him his marshal, a great privalege indeed.

guelphwelf5sm.jpg

Emma von Andechs, a rather arbitrary and shelfish human being, was given the honor of handling Otto's finances.

emmavonandechs1an.jpg

Otto needed someone to handle court intrigue, a job he gave to his eldest daughter, Ethelinde.

ethelindevonnordheim9ky.jpg

Finally, for his chancellor, he choose a member of the nobility, Eckhard von Eselsberg.

eckhardvoneselsberg8ri.jpg

Well, now it was time for some more interesting thing, so lets so.

I once played a game w/ roughly the same premise--taking a German ducal dynasty (in my case, the Rheinfelden of Swabia) and trying to form an independent crusader state in the Holy Land. Sadly, I never finished that game (though I did take Jerusalem), nor did I try to make an AAR of it. It'll be interesting to see what kind of luck you have :)

Yep, I do hope this goes a lot better than my Georgia one. The only thing is the first years are going to be rather boring, since there won't be any Crusading. Anyway, lets see how this goes.

The von Nordheim Family Tree

During the year 1067, Otto had been preoccupied with affairs in Bavaria. The construction of various pieces of infrastructure had begun during this time, with the construction of forestries opening up the vast woodlands at the foot of the beautiful Bavarian Alps to begin to be used.

However, Otto, a normally proud man, was not proud with his children. His eldest son, destined to be a great warrior, was not to be one, as he developed into nothing more than petty follower, cowardly and trusting of others. His daughter, Ethelinde, had learned nothing in the court, and amounted to nothing more than a amatuerish pettifogger, taking delight in the art of diplomacy, but being mediocore with it. This would be quite detrimental to her skill as spy master, but Otto was forced to accept the situation.

Unfortantly for Otto, life would not improve much. during the winter of 1069, his second son, Siegfried, suffered a very nasty fall while playing outside the family castle, and his condition worsended, becoming ill in the process. Thankfully, during the summer months, a miracle worker came, offering to heal the Duke's next hope for a successful son, but Otto refused, taking his faith in God (actually, the thing appeared out of nowhere, and I accidently selected it  ), and Siegfried indeed made a miraculous recovery from his debilitating accident earlier that year.

bavaria423fz.jpg

Otto's Forestries in Winter

However, fate is never so kind, and his third son, Kuno, became ill with a terrible cough and fever during April, Otto was left to hope his son wouldn't die. During his illness, Kuno abandon his modesty and instead became zealous, indeed, a hater of heathens.

It was also in 1071 than Heinrich came of age, a point at which a wife was found for him to be married in a few years.

heinrichvonnordheim8xe.jpg

Ah, the son, if only he learned not to trust people, and also not to be such a coward... tisk... tisk...

Indeed, after he came of age, Heinrich attempted to make his father make him spy master. Otto refused this, and Heinrich made numerous more attempts to try to take the position from his sister, after which Otto and Heinrich got into an argument, and Heinrich was temporarily kicked out of the household, becoming very stressed.

Oddly enough, just the low expectations for Heinrich, he turned out to become quite a brilliant strategist, creating devious plans and strategies that almost always win the day, and thus, Otto rewarded his son by allowing him to be marshal of Bavaria. Indeed, this proved to be good for the young man, and he soon grew out of his stress.

Ida becomes rather mischevious, developing into a character who is known for her cruelty and energy, however, her main fault is heir recklessness, a good thing she will not become a general. She is later, upon reaching her majority, married to the Duke's general.

by 1075 both Siegfried and Kuno have reached their majority, and are 17 and 16, respectively. After several marriage attempts by Otto fall apart due to various reasons on his part, he finally marries of his eldest son, Heinrich, to Judita Premyslid, the eldest daughter of the Duke of Bohemia, Vratislav Premyslid. Otto then gives the region of Oberbayern to his son, entrusting him with the region, while allowing Guelph Welf to become the Duchy's marshal once again.

Oddly enough, by Feburary of the year, Bohemia becomes an independant, so, now Otto's daughter in law is the eldest daughter of a King. ;)

Kuno, the youngest son, become's a rather fanatical priest, being detached from the world. Otto does think it could be his chronic illness that is behind his apparently madness in theology. However, at the same time, Siegfriend excels at the art of intrigue, and becomes an illusive shadow. This makes him very good in the various arts of politics and diplomacy, and an alright general. Time to find this promising young man a promising young wife.

siegfriedvonnordheim5lm.jpg

If only he could grow up and stop being stressed, but then again, to be among lesser men...
and...

kunovonnordheim9pd.jpg

Apparently, two miracle workers couldn't cure his poor kid.

Well now, its 1078, and I'm taking a break for the night. Later.

Thankfully just the parental upbringing icon. I probably would've mentioned him becoming a leper, heh.

Oh, thanks. I'm still rather new to the whole AAR thing so its a tad bit difficult for me to flesh out a well written one, hence why I must choose so otherworldy concepts. ;)

Anyway, don't worry, I can't wait for Siegfried I, King of Egypt, either.

Incidentally, if you want the "updated" .bmp w/ the Parental Upbringing (and other traits):

I think we're using (roughly) the same graphics mod, so I don't think it changes too much else. Just save it as "traits.bmp" in your Interface folder. (Imageshack has this annoying habit of renaming images...)

During the last months of 1078 and during early 1079, a synod of ecclesiatics and layman of the Roman Catholic Church is held in Trento, and Gregory VII called for a Holy Crusade to recapture Jerusalem from the heathen Muslims. Indeed, now would be a great time, with the once great Fatimid kingdom having broken down and shrunken to merely Egypt.

egyptandlevantin1079xs1.jpg

Egypt and Levant in Feburary 1079

At a similar momemt of time, Otto marries he second son, Siegfried, who has, upon the news of a Crusader, been clamouring to go, a Norwegian wife, the youngest daughter of the King of Norway, Ingegerd Haraldsottir Yngling.

ingegerdharaldsottirynglingsy5.jpg

Meanwhile, Mechthild, who has been taught be scholers, becomes a critical one herself, becoming a rather skeptical and suspicious character.

It is in 1080 when the popularity of a Crusade in Bavaria forces Otto to reluctantly go and retake Jerusalem. However, while on the way to Jerusalem, in the city of Venice, some events occured in which the course of the Crusade would change, and the Bavarians and Germans, led by Otto would shift to Egypt.

Unfortantly, on the way to Egypt, during the trip in the Adriatic, Otto was thrown overboard by some stormy weather, and died, making the great general Siegfried the new leader.

The Crusaders land near Alexandria in January 1081, beginning the siege of this port city. On May 17th, the tired and starving Crusaders actually managed to sieze the city from the Fatimids, initiating a sack which lasted for some time. Heinrich made Alexandria his base of operations for the Crusade to take Jerusalem.

1099jerusalem.jpg

Capture of Cairo from the Fatimids

After the capture of Alexandria, Heinrich turns southward for the Fatimid stronghold of Cairo, hoping to take that city to break the Fatimids and turn the Crusade in Egypt into nothing more than consoliditing the realm. It was well known that Heinrich had all the intentions of going home to Bavaria after this, but Siegfried, who inherited very little from his father's death, was more than happy to be a Crusader King.

Capturing_Damiate.jpg

Capture of Alexandria by German Crusaders

In January of 1083, the Fatimid's were finished off, and although Heinrich planned to reach Jeruslamen, many of the German crusaders were too tired and threatened to munity. Instead of taking advantage of this success and taking Jerusalem, Heinrich left Egypt, handing control of it to his brother, Siegfried, who was made Count of Alexandria.

Time for the next chapture...

P.S. Any of you know how to edit the save file to change province owner? I was also to do for some province controller. Apparently, a few sieges were total from me, and, merely for the sake of the AAR, I'd like to switch a few things. Thanks. ;)

Will you make Siegfried into King of Egypt and change your country to his instead? It would be more "in-character" in my opinion as he won't be inheriting Bavaria half the Mediterranean away from Egypt.

Extend the family I say! :p

That was entirely my plan. I didn't want a silly situation with Bavaria being a vassal, so making Heinrich or one of his kin be King of Egypt would be silly. Siegfried I, Latin (or maybe German?) King of Egypt. :p

I just got to transfer control of a few pesky provinces owners by some of my various German friends so I got the 11 provinces needed to create the title. :(

Siegfried I (The First), King of Egypt

It was on January 11, 1083, after much of the weary Crusader army had left Alexandria for home, that Siegfried, made ruler of Egypt, proclaimed himself the King of Egypt, carving out of the first of the Crusader states.

Baldwin_I_of_Jerusalem.gif

Coronation of Siegfried I in the the castle of Alexandria

However, for all intents and purposes, the Kingdom of Jerusalem was inheritently rather unstable and very weak. Many of the warriors loyal to Siegfried died during the expidition, and the majority of the Germans left to go home. Indeed, at the time of his coronation, Siegfried was left with a total manpower of only 1400 men, quite small for the large Egypt.

Indeed, although Egypt's large popuation was a gift from her fertile lands in the Nile, it could also plague the new founded Nordheim dynasty, because an overthrow would be incredibly easy.

At the same time, Siegfried had no Christians neighbors to aid the Kingdom if it needed aid, save only for the Orthodox Byzantine Empire, which was seperated by sea. Thankfully for Siegfried though, the Crusading spirit was still high in Europe and although his brother's army was side tracked, now that a base of operations was set up in Egypt, Jerusalem could be more easily retaken, especially with the divided Emirates in the Levant. Siegfried's biggest external threat was almost probably the Emirate of Cyrenacia, which had conquered the Christian Kingdom of Nubia, enabling an attack from the south or the west, a situation which Siegfried would want to remedy as soon as possible.

kingdomofegyptandthelevantin1083rt1.jpg

The Kingdom of Egypt and the Muslim World in 1083

However, even with it's weaknesses, Siegfried hopes he strengthen Nordheim rule in Egypt for his successors. Firstly, he needed a loyal base, and began operations trying to recruit various peoples from the whole of Europe, with the aim to get a steady influx of Italians, French, Germans, and of course, those Norman adventurers. Egypt could be a very effective land for the feudal system in Europe, considering the Nile had some of the most fertile land in the world.

As for his religious policy, Siegfried would initially stay with strict religious toleration to avoid angering the large Muslim and Orthodox populations in the Kingdom, so that it would not topple before a loyal base could be erected. Indeed, he went to playing the Orthodox and Muslims against each other in order to weaken these two groups, although a slight preferance was given to the fellow Christians. However, while forceful conversion was to be avoided, peaceful mass scale conversions were to be encouraged.

As a result of Siegfried's policy, the clergy and nobility would be siginificantly strengthened at the expense of the peasants and merchant class, a temporary price to be paid for the stability of the realm.

Except for the fact that Alexandria was, at the moment, exposed on the western flank of his kingdom, the city was a logical choice. It had been in decline for quite some time, but Alexandria would now replace Cairo. Due to it's strategic location as a port city, Siegfried realized it would be a more logical place to rule, as manpower from Europe would flow into his city, and, in the event of something terrible, it would be from Alexandria that the family could flee by boat.

However, maybe most importantly, Siegfried needed a male heir. He'd been married to his Norwegian wife for four years, yet she failed to give him a single child. Not that their one of them was old, but Siegfried wanted to maintain the independance of the Egyptian Nordhiem line.

However, it must be remembered that Siegfried became King in an alien land at the young age of 24, and so, one might wonder how his policy will change over time.

Anyway, nice to see you've accomplished your goal of setting up a crusader state. Where to next?

Hehe, I guess I'm an idiot, being unable to mod it, ah, but whatever.

As for my goal, right now it's just establishing myself in Egypt. Cyrenacia looks very big and scary, and even though I'm Egypt, my manpower is pretty low, so, before I try anything big, I do intend to boost it quite a bit, hopefully by an order of magnitude. Anyway, you'll see as it progresses.

P.S. My next post might take some time, I've decided to try adding another dimension and creating myself some characters. ;)

... unfortantly, I can't seem to do so without making the game crash. :(
