I hear many people complain about the lacking interaction between the empire in Stellaris. They feel the empires are "empty" and "shallow". To counter this I suggest the following:

-IRL a citizen of eg. Austria knows alot about his neighbouring countries. He knows something about messy Italian politics, hungarian food and their hot chicks and about the might of german megacorporations. Most of his knowledge he gets from the medias.

-why not having a kind of "media" in Stellaris? Eg. in style like a news paper (please no animated roboters :)) which pops up every year once, which reports intersting events and general news from the galaxy and galactic neigbours? For example if an neighbouring empire purges some population or if their fleet kills an asteroid, this would definately be mentioned in media. Or if the neighbours have elections, colonizing new planets, tech breakthroughs, war outcomes, diplomatic efforts etc. Some of these news are already ingame (like founding a federation) but they are disorganized and sporadic at best.

-even better would be when my neighbours also get news from my empire and react to these. Eg the game creates opinion modifiers. For example when I purge a population, my pacifist neighbours will know it through their media and I can be sure to get a protest note and an opionion penalty with them. Or when my fleet kills a dangerous asteroid, I get a memo with congrats from my neighbour and maybe also +10 opionion for the next 10y.

i really like this. just about every civil aspect of the game can be greatly expanded upon with a mass media mechanic.

I can see the fun in this, but doing it right would need quite a bit of work. Generate some "news articles" based on events, wars and actions of your own and discovered empires phrased in a way that fits with the ethos and government of your empire.

Xenophiles will herald the purging of alien pops in your own or a neighbouring empire as genocide. Or an article about how the empire squashed the uprising of the seperatists. All displayed on a fancy holoscreen that matches the background of your chosen ethos. Have it generate these articles on the fly with a bit of prioritizing and have a pane you can open to see the Galactic News Network, don't have it pop up automatically so it doesn't interfer with those (weird) people who don't care about storytelling.

The problem is that, while a fun idea, this doesn't really add anything gameplay-wise and as such I doubt this will be anywhere near to a priority, considering the amount of effort that would go into creating this.

Like the newspapers in Victoria II which I ignore? Or Chirpy in Cities Skyline which I ignore and downloaded the mod to disable him the day it came out?

I don't know about Victoria II, but I think it would be kind of like Chirpy, but hopefully less obnoxious and intrusive. This should be a flavour-thing; A tab you can click open at any time for an update while you wait for your research to finish, for example. The thing with Chirpy in Cities: Skylines is that it displays issues that are already displayed by the "needs-clouds" over your buildings, right now there is no such thing in Stellaris except for a message pop-up.

If it's indeed media-like I would assume a declaration of war, for example, would stay on the "front page" longer and more prominently than your neighbours finding a mineral-rich asteroid.

But like I mentioned before, because this is such a flavour-thing, I doubt there's any priority for working on something like this right now.
Also, I think this topic should be in the "Suggestions" sub-forum.

I mean, it was done in Victoria 2 and rapidly filled up with stuff that was skipped. It MIGHT be worth reading if diplomatic incidents are fleshed out (which would give both variety and valuable information about the diplomatic situations) and maybe if anomalies were reported, but in general I think it would be a low priority sort of change.

The main issue is that it's mostly there for flavor, but flavor would have to be added elsewhere first anyways in order for it to be worth reading.

The whole idea is nice, but it needs this...

fanatic xenophobes dont join this galactic media, instead they should be able to create spy probes or something like that (not visually seen if devs want to) to spy on other empires and see whats going on, and a new mapmode for them so the player can know who is their enemy. So basically they dont get notifications every year (or month) unless they make this galactic spy agency, in addition to this they may be able to steal empire resources (new leader type) if they got the right tech, and others can counter this with different tech.

This makes xenophobes more then just a nerf and a "I am an asshole" sign strapped to your chest.

Maybe it comes online after someone researches robots. It could be the Galactic News Network. And the presenter could be a devilishly handsome gold robot with a head like a can who still reads the news off a piece of paper for some reason.

With a spotless 90's combover, a three-piece suit and turning to a different camera after every segment.

So even stronger AI crisis? Appearing EVERY empire once it comes online, and able to control one, if citizens are too attached with the media? Sounds good.

When the Robot Uprising happens, it's normally golden or blue eye becomes bright-red, the screen starts showing some distortion and it starts spouting pro-synth propeganda.

So your saying, if players pay attention enough, they might already know the Uprising is going to happen. Well you cant really do anything about it, because how is the event for stopping it going to trigger? If you look at a synth for 2 minutes or something?

So your saying, if players pay attention enough, they might already know the Uprising is going to happen. Well you cant really do anything about it, because how is the event for stopping it going to trigger? If you look at a synth for 2 minutes or something?

I wasn't actually suggesting it'd change anything about the Uprising, I was referring more to the possibility that, from the first event mentioning the uprising untill the point the uprising ceases to exist, the robot newsreader could change its tone and appearance.

The way media interacts with your empire could be meshed with your stance on individualism/collectivism. An individualistic empire would have independent media which influences elections and policy stances, whereas collectivistic empires have Pravda-like publications that push the official party line.
