The New Religious Conversion Decisions

Does anyone know what the pre-requisites are for the new (I think they're new) Religious Conversion decisions to show up? Do you have to own a province of that religion or be a neighbor or ...?

I saw these while playing an Animist nation.

As a shia nation I moved capital to a sunni province and could then convert to sunni.

You just need a province with that religion, and to be non-tribal/primitive. You can then switch for a -4 stab hit, similar to how Tengri can adopt Vajrayana, except that you're switching into an actually good religion.

OK, there might be a bug then. I got the decision to convert to "Buddhism" I believe after I had conquered some Confucian provinces in the Canton area.

It's not a "bug", it's just a slightly confusing name for the decision. If a Pagan country owns a province with a religion in the Eastern group (all the Buddhisms + Shinto and Confucianism), the Convert to Buddhism decision becomes available. When you enact the decision, an event fires and you can choose a new religion from the Eastern group so long as you have a province with that religion. For some reason Mahayana isn't an option though. The decision should probably be renamed to "Convert to an Eastern Faith" or something.

So only pagans get this decision then? I later converted to Christianity but had no choice and had to start as Catholic - then converted to Reformed right away using the old method.

Only Pagans have access to that decision, yes. There's a similar decision to convert to a Christian religion too. You can even go Coptic.
