If standard foot platoons were a hazard in maps like Urban or Lowlands? (You know, where you'd expect to find them...) I'd be intrigued. But, well, the best ideas I can come up with are basically functioning as 'mobile weapons emplacements' which aren't dangerous except to already-damaged 'Mechs . . . and could be avoided once noticed.

Not to mention...What would happen to infantry on a Tropical Biome. I don't know if I'd trust those 'spore' fields and clouds.

You want a zombie apocolypse? Because that is how you get a zombie apocolypse.

I've seen The Last of Us, spores and people don't end well.

I'd love to have infantry less for combat effective value and more set dressing. While it'd be nice to give some MG/Flamer based mechs feel a little more useful as pest control, having people on the ground would make the urban maps in particular feel more lived in.

That said, i'm sure it would be a ridiculous amount of effort to implement for a "oh hey that looks neat" visual.
I'd definitely like to see infantry added to the game myself. Still, I have a hard time picturing an implementation that not only seems to me like it would be practical enough to get made, but also would have me wanting to control them myself. AI units are sufficient.

I feel like the Jager and Rifleman should fight it out for supremacy :)

I can help make that a reality... in another 19-Days! : )

Make it so #1!

The "modders can do it, why can't the devs?"

(I'm going to catch A LOT of flak for this but . . . )

While I don't mean any disrespect to the modders, I find it irksome that that's the "go to" for whenever something that someone wants, isn't in the core game. "well the modders can do it!!" Well, that's true. But if the modders were all that and a bag of chips, why haven't they created their own game instead of letting someone like HBS do all the heavy lifting and then they come sailing in for the "quick fixes"?

As mentioned, the modders can do stuff quicker than the developers of the game (this and any game that has mod support) because they don't have to answer to/fo the myriad of things the actual developers do.

Anyway . . .that's my issue with the whole "but modders!" thing . .

Mediocre Cookies? Yeah, same. Got some store bought peanut butter and MnM cookies from Meijer and they were hard as a rock, even after soaking it in milk. Not satisfying when its like biting into a rock.

Isn't that the worst?

Especially when the cookie(s) look so soft and moist and yummy. Then you bite into and break a tooth . . .

My sister and I were talking today about the time back in the day when she accidentally made sugar cookies with the (unlabelled) salt instead of the (unlabelled) sugar. They still looked and smelled excellent... and it took a moment after biting into one before the full effect hit.

(I believe that was in the middle of my mom's Costco kick, where she bought massive amounts of pretty much everything. Including salt and sugar... so we needed smaller containers for normal use rather than having the massive bags accessible.)

LOL Oh that's bad . . . that's really bad.

Reminds me of the time when I was a kid and got into my Grandma's baking cabinet. Thought I'd hit the motherload when I found this giant brick of chocolate* . . . Like the cookies, it took a minute or two for the full effect to set in.

*That would be "baking chocolate for all of you non-bakers out there. I didn't know there was a difference at the time either. And still wouldn't if not for that incident . . . Needless to say, she got a laugh and told me that's what i got for poking around where I shouldn't. :)

Masking tape and a sharpie works wonders. Half of my kitchen is labeled that way. :)

Since we’re talking cooking mistakes, my favorite was my little brother who rushed the instructions while making rice on his own the first time. He used a cup of salt instead of a tsp. It was literally a solid block in the bottom of the pan.

I won't share the whole grisly details, but there are two stories - one of which is not mine so I don't have all the details.

First, there was a time when my family had found a small spice store which sold blends of their own making for various types of seasoning. The baggies were marked, but the label-making unit they had used thermal printing. Which means it wears off long before the baggie gives out - so we moved some of them to baby food jars. I found out, by the way, their "steak seasoning" resembled their "spaghetti sauce seasoning". (I label my spice mixes now, and mix them myself.)

Second had to be another classic - mixing up cornstarch and flour.

My wife and I just got done with a spice reorg. We’re quite happy with it, as we have square spice tins with labels magneted to steel baking sheets to make carrying easier. We also have one home made spice blend that we forgot to label and are simply guessing what it is. It’s so easy to be lazy and not label something!

Second had to be another classic - mixing up cornstarch and flour.
I can make that work with gravy, but I can’t think of many other applications that would work out ok with that swap...

Yes I too would like to see Infantry in BATTLETECH.

But I would gladly embrace successive approximations toward the Goal of Infantry.

For example, we already have Turrets in BATTLETECH. A good variety of Turrets, multiple weapons load-outs and different levels of strength and durability.

What say a building (already in BATTLETECH) be turned into a “Turret-like” Structure by adding a number of Machine Guns, SRM-2’s and Infernos to it.

A further step could be a trench-like structure along a wood line that again includes Machine Guns, SRM-2’s, Infernos and given HEAVY METAL, perhaps even a Mech Mortar. : )

Such an approach would take advantage of existing features, all the while incrementally breathing Form, Function and Life into the idea of BATTLETECH Inffantry.

And then maybe one day many months/years from now we just might see BATTLETECH Infantry given some limited amount of agency and movement within the game. : )

that sounds like a good implementation, in my opinion.
The infantry could be totally hidden until you step into range of their weapons, and then a skyscraper starts shooting you in the back. Maybe get an early warning from Darius "They have infantry somewhere in X area, be careful"

Except we know how those early warnings often . . . aren't.

It's the game design, since his lines are sent after the trigger conditions are met. Sometimes those are good (later mission designs warning you there will be reinforcements, and to keep an eye out) and some are not ("That base has point defenses. Turrets, boss." After an LRM turret has opened up on you and is now visible.)
