This makes perfect sense from a gameplay stance, although I imagine some players will complain when the maintenance costs of their ships goes up when they discover the boiler.

Actually, to be ideally historical, the land/navy maintenance slider should affect the pay that Solider POPs are getting, and hence Consciousness and Militancy. The 'neutral' value for maintenance should mean that Soldiers get about the same income as a Labourer does - if the wages of Labourers rise, then so should the wages of Soldiers. And if the Soldiers aren't paid enough, up rises their Consciousness and Militancy.

On the topic of maintainence sliders-these need an overhaul. I hated that it was 'all or nothing' on the level at which your ships were maintained in Vicky1-a big problem for large navy states.

Fleets should be able to be put 'in reserve'/have a reserve option, so you can keep your main fleet at full operational readiness and build up the reserves as needed.

Agreed.

And considering that HoI3 now has the ability to "upgrade" units from one type to another, it could be interesting to have the ability to modernize ships somewhat and turn old sail ships into hybrid steam-ships.

Yes, but fundamentally, it's not going to happen. ;-)

Why not? I mean I understand why you wouldn't want players to be able to fully upgrade a Man-O-War all the way up to a Dreadnought, but considering (as some have pointed out) the large gap in naval development in Vicky I it might be worth allowing Sail ships to upgrade to Early Steam Ships.

Of course as this is not HOI, I do imagine that indeed such a feature is probably not going to be implemented, but one can dream. :D

Does King have any word on the subject?

Slightly off-topic I realise, but reading this thread I do hope that Ticky will allow specific units/brigades to be placed, as opposed to doing it randomly, as in Europa Universalis III.

I'm sure it won't be the case, but I am wary of the idea of the Royal Navy consisting of twelve random frigates in 'London' and that's it.

that is exactly why it won't be in ;-)

My personal approach (which I may well try to mod in at some stage) is to make sure that the 1840s/50s 'early steam navy' techs improve the stats of ships-of-the-Line and Frigates to represent the impact of screw ships-of-the-line, steam frigates, and the like...
