A week (more or less) have gone by, and as such I'd like to nominate an old gem from the HoI2 days, ca 10 years ago ( 
). This AAR was using the All the Russias mod, which IIRC was merged into the Kaiserreich mod later on? My memory on it is a bit fuzzy. In any case, this AAR follows Russia and her fate, lasted for 55 pages and ended after a whooping 85 updates. So there's reading to do! All updates are short, but not too short, and can be read even with the old graphics long gone. Without further ado, welcome @RossN and his The Bear in Winter AAR!

I've read many works by RossN but admit this is one that passed me by. I remember the work but was never one to delve too deeply into HoI AARs. Perhaps time to rectify that for at least this AAR.

I always felt bad about abandoning The Bear in Winter and I'm glad it is so fondly remembered. I loved the All the Russias mod, though I would have to route around extensively to find it. Russia has always fascinated me - my current Victoria 2 AAR is set in France but I very nearly went with Russia instead, and someday I might just do another AAR set there. I have a soft spot for HoI 2 as well (I never managed to get into the later games in the series sadly.)
What I tried to do with this AAR was to take advantage of the shorter timescale to introduce other factors like a bit of a narrative and character rather than 'pure' history book. That was a lot of fun and again is something I'd love to return to someday!
I remember that AAR, though sadly it seemed to be most active around the time of one of my nadirs in forum activity. I've always considered it a pleasure to follow and comment on your AARs, @RossN, all the way back to The Substance of Power. Let's hope that continues to be the case for a long time into the future as well
Congrats, RossN! I followed The Harp and the Crown, but was unaware of The Bear in Winter. It's been a while since I've had time to play Paradox games, but a couple weeks ago I bought HOI 4 and started playing a HOI 3 HPP scenario (yes, you read that right ).
On another note, @LordDurham I came across my copy of the Heroica anthology the other day, and I still need to get it to you for an autograph! In reading the contents I noticed I'm networked with a couple other of the authors, including Walter Rhein, who wrote a kind review of my fantasy novel when I published. I, too, gained the confidence to begin writing in the wider real world from my work here and the awesome feedback of AARLand Forumites!

My apologies for taking so long to get back here. I'm afraid real life and other activities delayed me a little, as I'm sure justifiably impatient long term readers of mine will have come to expect!
My choice for this thread was created by The_Guiscard in 2008, a writer who has not been active here in recent years unfortunately. That is especially a shame his unfinished Crusader Kings I AAR Furor Normannicus is so good. Like so many early AARs it no longer has working pictures, but this narrative tale of the intrigues, ambitions and treasons of the Southern Italian Normans is more than exciting enough to keep one's interest. In particular the writer showed great skill in character work, especially female characters who often disappear in even the best narrative AARs.
Anyway, even unfinished I think this AAR is well worth checking out whether as an older reader who fondly recalls it, or a new one interested in seeing a great example of the craft.

That was a fine work, no doubt! Congrats The_Guiscard. A well crafted narrative that I enjoyed a great deal!
Well, it's been a couple of weeks and so it seems time to honor another oldie but goodie. This time, however, I actually have two.
They both are of a piece and if my sources are correct, there may be a third in the making. But perhaps I speak too soon. For now, I give you:
History Park: Who Wants To Be Napoleon! and History Park: Here There Be Dragons by the great Director. These two works are part of a grand saga that this man has been writing for over a decade. If you want a down and dirty idea of what they may be about you may look to the fAARq and see the Reviews section but ultimately, they should be read and enjoyed.
Read the History Park series because that is where history comes alive!
