TheMorea.jpg

In May of that year (1115), Athanasios recieved a sorrowful letter from Tobritza, his third daughter. Nikolaos, her husband, had recently fallen from his horse while the two of them were riding together, and he had been seriously injured. There had been nothing the doctors or physicians could do for him, except ease his pain, and so he had died, at the young age of 25.

Athansios shed a tear for his poor daughter. He remembered as thought it were yesterday, the day when she told him of her love for Nikolaos, and how Count Alexandros had refused, and he had had to threaten the stubborn old fool in order to get him to accept the marriage. But now Count Alexandros was dead, too.

Suddenly, Athansios threw himself back into his chair. Something had only just occurred to him. He was outliving everybody he loved. His father, his brothers, his sisters, his mother, his first wife, his eldest nephew, his mentor... who would be next? He began to cry.

After a while, Nest and Alexios entered his chambers, and saw him, lying on his bed, hiccupping. It was clear, he was dead drunk.

Nest ran over to her father and said, "Father, what's happened to you?"

The king tried to life his head, but couldn't, "Who the hell are--" hic "-- are you?"

Nest shook him, "I'm your daughter!"

"What dau--" hic "-- what daughter?"

Nest was now very angry with her father, he had never been so drunk before that he didn't recognize her. She took her hand and slapped him clean across the face. He rubbed his cheek and said, "That wasn't very nice..."

"FATHER! Snap out of it!"

Alexios put his arm on her shoulder, "Perhaps we should come back later..."

But Nest wouldn't go, "FATHER! PLEASE!"

Athansios seemed to be sobering up a little...

Nest asked, "What's wrong, father?"

The king pointed to his chest and said, with tears in his eyes, "It hurts..."

"What hurts?"

"My whole inside!"

"Why?"

"Everybody I care about is dying! I don't wanna outlive all my friends and family!"

"But Alexios and I are still here."

"But daddy's dead. And so's my mother, and my brothers, and my nephew, and..."

"Rest assured, father," said the princess as she hugged her father, "I have no intention of leaving you. Ever."

Alexios felt sorry for his father-in-law. He smiled and said, "Don't take this the wrong way, sire, but I plan to outlive you by many decades!"

Athansios then smiled. And for a few minutes, he seemed almost human again...
_______________

Indeed, the king was cheerful again. And in June, he became even happier, for his new queen, Kale, was pregnant with their first child, perhaps his first son...
_______________

In March of 1116, the trade of glassblowing made its way to Achaia, and the income of the province went up, as the Morea now had its first real trade good, glass.

A few days after the first glassblower's was opened, Queen Kale gave birth to a healthy young boy. Athansios named the lad Georgios, in honour of his illustrious father, and declared Prince Georgios his new heir.
Georgios.jpg

As if this wasn't enough good news, a month later, in April, Queen Kale was again pregnant.
_______________

In August, reinforced leather armour became the norm for the light-troops in the Morea, as opposed to their older, regular leather armour.
_______________

In November, Princess Nest gave birth to another son, and her and Alexios chose to give him a Welsh name, and so he was named Morgan. But the younger Alexios was still ill from the poison, and the couple prayed fervently for his recovery.
MorganDekanos.jpg

_______________

In January of 1117,Queen Kale gave birth to her and Athansios' second son, who was named Konstantinos, in honour of the late Emperor Konstantinos X, who had first created the Kingdom of the Morea and made Georgios I the first king.
Konstantinos.jpg

And again, in February, Queen Kale was pregnant!

Two boys and a third, with any luck on the way. Thisnew queen ismuch more to Athanasios' liking and puts Zoe's lessthan cometent sons further from the succession.

Now, he has a daughter to marry off again. I wonder whom he will chose?

If Zoe has her way, he won't outlive his friends and family. A crusade is just the thing to perk him up again.

Well, I suppose that as various people he cared about were dying it was time to procreate some more people to care about!

Something I ran into you might know or have already discounted:

Site up with the claim the Palaiologoi were from the House of David through Hillel.

Congrats on your popping out some new members ;) and here's to retaking Jerusalem in the near future,

That's a very interesting discovery, thanks for showing me that. However, I can't seem to find the real Georgios Palaeologus in that lineage at all. But I was told earlier that he was the ancestor of the royal Palaeologi. If that's true, shouldn't he be in that geneology? Any ideas as to why I can't find him?

Thanks for the congrats. However, I don't think the Palaeologi will be visiting Jerusalem any time soon. Sorry. :(

EDIT: However, based on this new information you have provided, we may be able to go there sooner than orginially anticipated... ;) I'll see if I can work it into the story somewhere. Though it may take a few more generations...

Well he could've been the brother of someone on those lines, but here's a different lineage I found from google that has Georgios but dead ends pretty quickly.

TheMorea.jpg

It was a chilly day in Achaia, thanks to the cold November winds. Supreme General Alexios Dekanos was training Prince Bartholomaios, who was freshly 16, and also Ipa of Persechen, son of Aba of Persechen. (Aba and his family were among the first Pechenegs to convert to Orthodox Christianity.)

Both boys were very good with a sword, but Ipa, who was a year older than Bartholomaios, showed more promise with his mind.

After they had taken their break for lunch, Alexios summoned them and said, "You two boys are getting better every day! Your training is almost complete. Is there anything in particular that you'd like to do before your training ends?"

Bartholomaios looked over at Ipa, then back at Alexios. He stroked his beard, which, like his father's, had grown very quickly, and he said, "Yeah... A sword fight."

Alexios raised an eyebrow, "A sword fight? But we've been practicing with swords all day."

Bartholomaios smiled, "I know, but Ipa and I have never dueled. I want to fight him. What do you say, Ipa?"

"I... I don't want to."

"Aw, c'mon! Why not? Ya scared?"

Ipa gulped a little, "Yes."

"Scared of what?"

"I'm scared that I might hurt you, my prince."

Bartholomaios smiled, "Ah, its no problem. People get hurt in sword fights all the time! Besides, we're going to be using wooden swords, the worst you could do to me is bruise me."

"Alright... I guess. If master Alexios says its okay."

Alexios threw his arms up in the air, "Hey, Bartholomaios is the prince, not me. As long as you guys use wooden swords like he said, there's not much I'm allowed to do to stop you guys."

"GREAT!" Shouted Bartholomaios, "I'll be right back!"

And sure enough, he was only gone for about a minute, before he returned with his two wooden swords, specially crafted to look like the sword Georgios I had used in his First Crusade. Bartholomaios tossed one to Ipa and said, "Let's do this!" And he swung at Ipa.

Ipa quickly parried, and proceeded to be on the defensive for a while, letting Bartholomaios attack, and parrying every single swing. As he parried, he slowly stepped backwards, until one point, where he suddenly broke left, which caught Bartholomaios off guard. The prince stumbled and Ipa put his sword to the prince's back, "I win."

Bartholomaios snickered, "Yeah, right!" And swung his sword around so that it struck Ipa's leg very hard. The Pecheneg let out a yell of pain, then took his leg and tripped the snickering prince. He kicked the wooden sword out of Bartholomaios' hand, put his right foot on the prince's chest, and his sword to the prince's neck, and said, "NOW, I win."

Bartholomaios sighed, "Yes, you win."

Then Ipa tossed away his sword, took his foot off the prince's chest, and offered his hand to help the prince up. Bartholomaios grabbed it and pulled, and soon Ipa was on the ground, face first. For a moment, Ipa didn't move, then he got up and glared at Bartholomaios. The prince was worried that he had done something stupid, and made his friend angry.

Then Ipa said, "Bartholomaios you... you..." then he burst out laughing, "you troublemaker you! That was the most fun I've had in a long time!"

Soon, Bartholomaios joined him in laughing. And Alexios smiled. For once, there was a happy, healthy, and friendly prince in the Morea.
BartholomaiosA.jpg

_______________

Soon thereafter, both Prince Bartholomaios and Ipa of Persechen were declared fit for army duty.

And within a few days, Queen Kale gave birth to her and Athanasios' first daughter, Arete.
Arete.jpg

In the end of November, a pagan priest in the Lower Don region preached revolt against Athanasios, but nothing came of it.

In January of the next year, 1118, Queen Kale was again pregnant.
_______________

It was a beautiful spring day in March, when Athanasios summoned his council.

All of the council members were present: Queen Kale, who was still able to attend council, being only two months pregnant; Spymistress Kyriakia Tryphillios; Supreme General Alexios Dekanos; Prince Bartholomaios; Steward/General Aba of Persechen; Aba's son, Captain Goar; and Princess Nest, the Royal Chancellor.

Athanasios announced to his council that he was intending to take over the Aegean islands.

Princess Nest rose and said, "Father, with all due respect, you have already taken land from the Prince of Euboea, the Island of Naxos, which you gave to General Dragos Kenchres, God rest him. To further provoke Prince Alexios would not be wise in the eyes of the world."

Athanasios sneered, "And since when have I cared what the world thought?"

Steward/General Aba rose and said, "Sire, more than just what the world thinks is this: The lands of the Pechenegs, my people, are mostly under Morean rule already, with a few weak and insignificant tribes left independent. Yet, my family is amongst the incredibly vast minority of Pechenegs which have accepted the One True Faith. Surely we should spend more time attempting to convert my brethren, so that all the Morean territory might be united by one Faith."

Athanasios replied, "Yes, yes, you make a good point. But the fact remains, the Aegean is a strategically important location. The more control we have over it, the more Emperor Michael will have to think before acting upon his insane father's crazy claims to my throne. I can't convert your brethren if I'm busy fighting the Roman Empire."

Aba bowed, "I see, sire. Very good."

And so the demand was sent to Prince Alexios of Euboea, that he either surrender the islands of Aegean, or suffer the consequences.

Before the end of the month, Prince Alexios' response came. The letter contained only two words, a quote from that most illustrious King Leonidas of Sparta, "Molon Labe" which means, "Come and take them".

Morean Euboea. It has a nice princely ring to it. The thought that Zoe might try to ensure one ofthe battles has fatal consequences for Athanasios has not entered my head.

Georgios is definitely the direct male ancestor of Mikhael VIII Palaeologus

The orders were sent immediately to mobilize for war against Euboea.

Athanasios would personally lead 900 men from the capital province of Achaia. Supreme Commander Alexios was sent to Epieros to take command of the 1200 men waiting there. Steward-General Aba of Persechen was sent to Abkhazia to take the 1600 men there and bring them to Euboea. Prince Bartholomaios and Captain Goar of Persechen were sent to Moldau, which was what the Pecheneg lands were collectively called, and together they would summon 1400 men from Belgorod and Olvia, and set sail for the island of Lesbos, which was the other main island of the Principality of Euboea.

As Alexios boarded the ship that would take him to his troops in Epieros, his wife, Princess Nest, came to say goodbye. She kissed him and said, "My love, we have another child on the way."

Alexios grinned, "You mean?"

"Yes, Alexios, I am pregnant again. Make sure you come home to see your new child."

Alexios kissed her, "I promise, I will return..."
_______________

It was three days until Athansios' fleet was to depart for Euboea. He was enjoying an early morning ride on his horse, when a messenger arrived.

Ipa of Persechen was the king's guard this morning. As he saw the messenger approach, he called, "Hail! Who are thee? And what business do you have?"

The messenger replied, "I am called Gregorios. I am a servant to the noble Prince of Kappadokia, Konstantinos Komnenos. I bear a message from him to the King of the Morea, Athanasios I."

Athansios said, "I am he. Speak."

Gregorios bowed and said, "Sire, my prince bade me tell you this, and I quote, 'Konstantinos, Prince of Kappadokia, to his most illustrious ally and defender, Athanasios, King of the Morea. Hail, noble lord. Word has reached my court of your war with the Principality of Euboea. I have for some time now held with him an alliance treaty, and this war forces me to choose between the two of you. Seeing as how you gave your word that if any man should attack me, you would come with all haste to defend my free lands, I did not have to ponder long which ally I would keep. My forces will depart for the island of Lesbos at once. I shall rid the inhabitants of the island of all their defenses, so that your armies may at once occupy the island. I remain ever your loyal friend and servant. God be with you.' Thus says my prince."

Athansios smiled, "Good. Tell him that his aid is much appreciated, and shall not soon be forgotten."

"At once, sire!"
_______________

It was late June, 1118, when the fleet of ships left the Morea and headed for Euboea. All in all, there were some 2,000 men under the command of King Athansios and Supreme-Commander Alexios. The troops from the outer provinces would arrive in Euboea and Lesbos later.

The journey to Euboea was a calm one. No storms and no encounters with the Euboean navy.

On July 7th, they landed on Euboea's southern shore.

It was dawn on the 8th, when the Euboean army was spotted. They numbered only about 600 men. Ipa of Persechen was sent, bearing a white flag of truce, to negotiate the surrender of the Euboeans.

As he entered their camp, the men looked at him with hate in their eyes. He wasn't sure what they hated more about him, the fact that he was a Pecheneg or the fact that he was wearing the Morean colours.

He was taken to Prince Alexios's tent, where he spoke with the prince personally.

After presenting Athansios' terms, which were uncharacteristically generous, he stared into the prince's eyes, and said, "What say you?"

Alexios said, "If I had any intention of surrendering, I would have done so upon your bastard king's first demand. Tell him that we will fight."

So Ipa left the Euboean camp and delivered the message to Athansios.
_______________

So Athansios summoned a war council, to determine the strategy that should be used. Present with him were Supreme-Commander Alexios, Captain Romanus, Captain Mikhael, and young Ipa of Persechen. Captain Romanus was the commander of the infantry; he was tall, scarred, and had a dark complexion. His hair was also very curly. Captain Mikhael was the captain of the archers. He was short and baby-faced, but he was stern with his men, and his archers feared and respected him.

Supreme-Commander Alexios made the first suggestion. But being more of a warrior than a strategist, his wasn't the best idea. He said, "Sire, the Euboeans are weak and we outnumber them by more than three to one. Put the knight guard in the centre flank with the infantry on either side of them. The light cavalry will protect the archers, who will provide skirmishing cover."

Captains Romanus and Mikhael both agreed with this idea, and Athansios was about the accept it, when Ipa spoke up, "Sire, if I may..."

Romanus glared at the boy, "You forget your place, PECHENEG!"

"AND YOU FORGET YOURS!" Shouted Athanasios, "I DECIDE WHO IS AND IS NOT IN THEIR PLACE! UNDERSTAND!"

Romanus bowed, "Yes, sire. Forgive me."

"BE GLAD I DON'T HAVE YOU FLOGGED FOR YOUR INSOLENCE! Now, Ipa, what were you going to say?"

Ipa bowed, "Sire, when I was in the Euboean camp, I saw the men there. They may be outnumbered and outclassed, but in their hearts burns a fierce hatred of us. They will fight fiercely and to the death to defend their homes. They remember what happened to their brethren on the island of Naxos. We cannot hope to overpower them, for they will overpower us with their sheer passion."

Athanasios asked, "Then what do you propose we do?"

Ipa cleared his throat, "If one studies military history, one will find that the typical military strategy has been to put the strongest troops in the centre, with the weaker ones on the flanks. But if one looks at the Carthaginian General Hannibal, one will find and interesting strategy of his, with which he defeated a superior army of Romans at the battle of Cannae. Hannibal put his weaker troops in the centre, and his stronger ones on the flanks. The result was that as the battle progressed, his centre flank collapsed under the might of the Romans. But his infantry and cavalry on the flanks easily destroyed the weaker troops on the Roman flanks, and soon enveloped the Roman centre, killing every Roman in the centre. The result was about 10,000 deaths for the Romans, if my sources are correct, and among these were nearly half the senators of Rome."

Mikhael snorted, "And how does this long dead pagan general help us any?"

Ipa continued, "If we put the light infantry in the centre, with the heavy infantry on the right flank and the Knight-Guard on the left, we can destroy the Euboeans with minimal casualties."

Athanasios began to think, and Romanus said, "Sire! Surely you can't be seriously considering this proposal? I mean, are you really going to let a Pecheneg boy lecture you?"

Athanasios took the back of his hand and slapped Romanus hard across the face, "That 'boy' happens to be the son of one of my close friends, and among the first Pecheneg converts to Christianity. I wish that more of his people would follow his example! And you could learn alot from him, too. Now you are ordered not to speak again until after the battle. If his strategy ends up a disaster, perhaps I will reconsider trusting his word. But if his strategy is correct, you will be humbled, for I will make you his servant. Am I clear?"

Romanus nodded.

"I SAID AM I CLEAR?"

Alexios put his arm on Athanasios' shoulder, "You ordered him not to speak again until after the battle. He is obeying your word."

Athanasios snorted, "Hmph, well that's a nice change."
_______________

So it was decided that Ipa's plan would be used for the battle the following day.

Athanasios ordered all the men to get good sleep.

But Alexios couldn't sleep. He was up very late, pacing back and forth. Ipa had awakened to use the bathroom. And after he had relieved himself, he noticed Alexios pacing, and walked over to him. He put his arm on his mentor's shoulder and said, "Are you alright, sir?"

Alexios looked to see who was talking to him, "Oh, Ipa, its you. No, I'm not alright."

"What's wrong, sir?"

"I have a very bad feeling."

"About my strategy?"

"No, Ipa, not about your strategy. I think it is a very good plan. It should work. Especially as we have numerical advantage already. No, I have a different sort of bad feeling. Like something is going to happen to me. Or maybe did happen."

"What do you mean, sir?"

"I don't know what I mean. I just... have this feeling... that something bad will happen..."

Ipa smiled a little and said, "Sir, I will do everything in my power to protect you."

Alexios smiled back, "Thankyou, Ipa. I feel better already." But he was lying. He felt no better. He still had that haunting feeling...

TheMorea.jpg

July 9th dawned just like any other day. Well, it did so for everybody except Alexios Dekanos, Supreme Commander of the Armies of the Morea. He hadn't slept a wink last night.

Nevertheless, he knew his duty. He began organizing the men into their companies and getting everyone in position for the battle.

It was 10am when the battle lines were drawn. 2000 Moreans against 600 Euboeans. Commanding the Morean light infantry in the centre was Captain Romanus. On the right, at the head of the heavy infantry was Supreme Commander Alexios, with Ipa of Persechen at his side. On the left was King Athanasios, at the head of the Knight-Guard.

Athanasios rode out infront of his men and said, "Men! You know the plan! Obey your orders and we shall win the day with minimal casualties! And remember... kill every last enemy soldier! Let none escape! God be with you!"

And all the men shouted back, "And God be with you, sire!"

Athanasios returned to his position, and motioned for the command to march. There was a single blast of the horn, and the army began to march towards the enemy. Across the field, the enemy horn could be heard, and the Euboeans began to march as well.

As the two armies closed in on each other, Athanasios gave the next signal, and one long, loud blast was heard, followed by the king's cry, "CHARGE!" And the Morean army rushed the Euboeans.

The Knight-Guard slammed into the ranks of the Euboean right-flank. The Euboeans on that flank were mostly swordsmen, and were torn apart by the king and his guards.

The light infantry met in the centre with the Euboean heavy swordsmen.

And the Morean heavy infantry met with the Euboean left. This was the fiercest part of the battle. Supreme Commander Alexios swung about violently with his sword, killing one... two... three... four... five Euboeans within the first two minutes of combat.
Swordfight.jpg

Suddenly he felt a blow to his arm. He let out a cry of pain and then felt more pain as a hard shield smashed his head and sent him to the ground. The Euboean soldier raised his spear for the kill and began to thrust. But before he could strike Alexios, a blade cut his spear in two, and a foot kicked him to the ground. Before he could get a look at who had knocked him down, he was dead. Alexios got up and looked at his rescuer, it was Ipa! The Pecheneg put his hand on the Supreme Commander's shoulder and said, "I told you I wasn't going to let anything happen to you!" And they both smiled.

Meanwhile, the Euboean centre had pushed into the Morean centre. Many Moreans there had died, including Captain Romanus. But soon, the Euboean flanks were destroyed, and the Euboean centre surrounded. Within minutes, all 600 Euboeans were dead.
HeatOfBattle.jpg

Prince Alexios' body was nowhere to be found. Apparently, the ruler of Euboea had fled to his castle the night before the battle.

When the casualties had been counted, the number astounded everyone. Only 200 Moreans had lost their lives that day. About 140 of them had been in the centre, with the other 60 interspersed throughout the rest of the battle. The interesting thing was, the Moreans entered this battle with 3 times the Euboean numbers, and yet had suffered only 1/3 of the casualties that the Euboeans had suffered.
_______________

Within a few days of this victory, the castle was under siege.

Supreme Commander Alexios Dekanos was just beginning to feel like maybe he had worried invain, when a messenger arrived, on July 23rd. He bore a message from Princess Nest, for the eyes of Supreme Commander Alexios only.

Alexios read the letter, and when he had finished reading it, he dropped it to the ground. Everybody nearby could see that he was fighting back his tears.

Ipa came over to him and said, "What's wrong, sir?"

"This letter from my wife tells me that my son, Alexios, died from the poison on the 9th of July. That was the day that we fought the battle. Remember how I had felt that something bad was going to happen to me? Well, it did. My son died, and I wasn't there..."
_______________

Athanasios met with his Supreme Commander later that day and said, "Alexios, I want you to return home."

"Sire, I'm not sure I understand..."

"My friend, you must go home to grieve. Ipa told me what happened, and requested that I let you go home. I said I wouldn't have it any other way. You should visit your son's tomb, and comfort your wife, who is also my daughter. I wish that we could both be there to comfort her, but one of us must remain here to lead the siege. Since he was your son, you should go."

"But... but... who will help you command the army, sire?"

"Aba and Goar of Persechen will be here shortly. And until then Ipa will help me. Go home. That's an order."

Alexios bowed, "Thankyou, sire!"

But Athanasios corrected him, "That's 'Thankyou, father'. You are my son-in-law." And he smiled.

Alexios said, "Thankyou... father." And he left immediately for Achaia.

Victory was easy as I expected. But indeed news for Alexios were bad.

BTW: After this war it would be nice to see map of Morea.

If he wants to believe in a balance of things he has all the proof he needs, with co-incidences like that.
