Why do Venetians always end up marrying black characters and ending up black? I always see it in my games. And why do the Irish always end up marrying people from Spain?

For the first, there's two explanations. First, merchant republics have a random event where a member of one of the five families falls in love with an exotic woman (North African trader's daughter, I guess?) and marries her. Second, IIRC Abyssinia is within diplomatic range of Venice so it could be a political marriage.

For the latter, blame holy wars. I found a black, culturally Anglo-Saxon, religously Germanic courtier in York one time. No idea how the Germanic part got into it, but he was apparently the son of an Abyssinian count who got booted by the Muhallabids.

But the Irish start marrying people from Spain even before holy wars begin. It's like they're hardcoded to prefer Spanish wives over all others.
