Playing A-H, i chickened out of the sleswig war with denmark because earlier on I saw that denmark was allied with Russia. And at that time i had taken little care in my military and had been focusing on the economy. a loss of 50 prestige hurt.
Well a few years down the road, the Crimean War comes up. I had improved my military drastically. And since Russia was in a war with Ottoman empire, France, S-P and friends(Allied with ottomans), why can't i join in on the fun, wrestle with the russian bear. A russian bear who, with the entry of Great Britian into the fray, had 2 arms tied behind his back.
So i pull the two armies stationed in italy, one of 7 div. and the other of 5 to the russian border. I also have another army of 5 div in venetia, just in case the issue over italy comes up (forgot when that is supposed to happen, after the crimean war i guess) I use my army in hungary of 5 div.and and army in siebenburgen of 5 div to start the assault to keep the 8 or 9 scattered russian divs. on my border distracted.
As i began to form a war plan, i thought that any provinces I take is just going to make for a longer border to defend. I didn't want that, so i looked at St. Petersburg. Quite a ways away, I wasn't sure I would be able to make it before the russians got done with the ottomans, yet i decided to go for it. Initially I had planned on waiting for my 7 div army from italy before i began a major offensive, but since time was of the essence for me, I began my army of hungary with 5 divs marching towards St. Petersburg, using my Siebenburgen army following 1-2 provinces behind it to keep it from being cut off.
When my armies from Italy arrived, I used them to distract the larger russian armies that were forming (35000 was the largest i saw, and they were defending St. Petersburg. Of course good 'ol GB were using Sestavpol as their staging area for the invasion of great Russia). I kept my Hungarian Army marching and occupying, and my siebenburgen army fighting off the russian troops that would cut off my advancing army from supply.
A year and a half later from when I started the great march, I ended up in the province bordering St. Petersburg. my 50,000 strong army had whittled down to 28,000. There was an army of 35,000 garrisoned in St. Petersburg, so i risked getting cut off and pulling my army of Siebenburgen up to join with my hungarian army and assaulted St. Petersburg. By the time the siebenburgen army had joined up with the Hungarian Army, they were already cut off, I had to use my 7 div army from italy who was busy occupying Russian poland to clear a line of supply back to them and by that time, The russians had made peace with the ottomans and allies. So I assaulted St. Petersburg with a line of supply hoping that my army of Italy would clear the way quickly enough.
My army of Italy cleared a supply line just as my Hungarian/Siebenburgen combined army made it to St. Petersburg and began fighting. A small russian offensive on my southern border netted them 2 provinces, but it was no matter, After over 2 years of fighting, and a long and exhausting march through russia over 2 winters(i know winter isn't factored in-game) I took St. Petersburg. My Army of Hungary was at 18,000 and my army of siebenburgen was at 22,000. I ended up grabbing war indemnities and had to march my hun/sieb army back home through peaceful, but unfriendly territory (lost about another 5,000 on the march home. But when they reached Vienna, much celebrating and toasting was done in their honor(I had a beer) and they were offered a well deserved rest(i took a nap).
Anyways, same thing has probably happened to you, but it was just fun for me.
Those war indemninites from russia has made me rich. who needs territories when you can just fund your reforms through war! ha ha.
anyways, sorry this is so long, just thought I'd share it.
