• Crusader Kings III Available Now!

The realm rejoices as Paradox Interactive announces the launch of Crusader Kings III, the latest entry in the publisher’s grand strategy role-playing game franchise. Advisors may now jockey for positions of influence and adversaries should save their schemes for another day, because on this day Crusader Kings III can be purchased on Steam, the Paradox Store, and other major online retailers.

    Real Strategy Requires Cunning

This thread is more than 5 months old.

It is very likely that it does not need any further discussion and thus bumping it serves no purpose. If you feel it is necessary to make a new reply, you can still do so though.

Just in case...Assuming you have another Theater in central-Africa, you'll have to select that HQ and "Paint" all Africa wherever you have forces. You should be able to delete the Tunis Theater then.

Thanks! I will check to see that it is controlling nothing and try to disband it again.

I second markkur's motion:). And is there some trick to deleting unwanted theatre HQs? I've never been able to do it. Does deleting them (if you can) return any manpower to the pool?

Viva la Belle France! Hope you eventually get to enjoy one of those 'cold revenge' vichyssoise! :D Getting the US to do what you'd like can be very hard - best of luck :)

You can't delete a theatre HQ that has some territory left, that includes tiny islands in strange places. Once it controls no provinces, then you can delete it.

I must admit I expected Spain to have fallen by now, if there was any logic behind the AI that's where the US would be rushing it's troops to. Much easier to reinforce an existing front than launch a massive amphibious invasion. Alas I suspect that opportunity will be scorned.

Hope so too. I foresee a more likely outcome of the USSR owning all of Eurasia. The irony will be wasted on me. :p

Allies never do what I want them to do. So I assume they will invade a tiny Japanese island some place.

1. Of course. :D

2. Well, that is my fault. I didn't think about assigning some ground troops to Saigon HQ - if I had it may had used its new Transports to take some of its men out of Africa. That's on me. :(

Hearts of Iron 3 (Their Finest Hour AAR): ‘The March of the Machines’
Chapter Forty-Five : January to March,1942

Welcome to the New Year! 1942! When America will flood their cities with colorful war posters and pin-ups! But how did it do for us in our game? Well, let us do a overview and then get down to the gritty details.

Vxq2Oqi.jpg

First off, Saigon would be put in control of our remaining ground forces in Africa and the remaining Air Wing in the Mediterranean.

s2jugpq.jpg

Our Tech. advances also as we now have Light Artillery (3) and Nuclear Research. We started researching Isotope Separation, of course.

o705qZu.jpg

Also, our Underground Resistance Cells will become available to be deployed. One will be placed in Paris in January and another will be placed in Bordeaux in February. Both would be told to spread the resistance and Paris would do so in March, spreading into Vernon.

yOaTj5g.jpg

Norway, for one shiny moment, would have a huge revolt which would disappear by the Idles of March. A warning to me - I need to time our revolts carefully.

RUjpO0n.jpg

The French and English Navy is Defeated in the Battle for West Central Mediterranean Sea. The Italians will launch two Naval Strikes, causing little damage.

The REAL war at sea is happening under the sea. The Axis, mostly the Japan, sink thirty-four of our transports and thirteen escorts. While the French raiders and subs sink four transports, half Japanese and half Italian.

The conflict for Africa goes badly. Fifteen Battles, all defeats. The French/UK/Iraqi forces are pushed eastwards towards the Nile.

The Germans/Italians lose 348 soldiers while the Allies lose 912 soldiers m in these Battles.

So the total for the whole war is now:
Germans/Italians: 84,445
French/Allies: 207,592 (Majority of troops fighting and lost in Africa were likely Iraqi)

The Other Fronts

At the start of the turn the Philippines, Republican Spain, and Greece are all fighting and holding their own. Funny enough Greece is so unimpressed by the Italians that they think Japan is the greater threat.

As always, the Greek Front has little in the way of change.

zDfEWGk.jpg
yPQezOo.jpg

Qm7hISn.jpg

The Spanish Front, on the other hand, shows the Germans bursting through the Allies’ right flank.

mmzj6rq.jpg

qJN10kg.jpg

nUyX8ZU.jpg

It leaves Spain wide open to the German and Italian Divisions. I don’t see them holding on much longer. And I forgot all about placing a Objective Tag for the USA in Spain! Stupid me! But I figure it is likely they are too involved in the Pacific Theatre.

In the Pacific the New Zealanders, Australians, and Americans are nibbling at the Japanese Empire, taking an island here and there. The Japanese have reacted by taking some of the small islands, like Guam, and invading the Philippines. I assume there are Naval Battles going on that I can’t see.

lUhWEqf.jpg

But as long as the Americans are focused on the Japanese I am not sure they would even notice a Objective Tag. Still, that is on me. Stupid, stupid!

So, we end this Chapter with a feeling of helplessness and the need to have comfort food. Maybe Chinese? Thanks for reading! Join us in the next chapter!

PS: perhaps some Ban Mai in Saigon to ease the comfort food cravings?

US in Saigon? Little early in the history time line for that. :D But may be worth it...make the Japanese focus on more than one front. But also, you are right. I don't think I could feed them. They would have to capture some ports along the Chinese coast to bring in their own supplies. The Japanese have already taken Hong Kong - maybe the US could take that?

I'm not certain about the range between a Theater and Army-group but have you looked to see if you have a province in central Africa within range, so 1st AG's OOB could be Green for Go? :)

There is a Theatre HQ in South-West Africa but I am trying to get the Saigon HQ to pull the troops out of Africa and into the Far East. I assume the Japanese will invade Indochina sooner or later. Still, staying in Africa may be better in the long run for their survival. They have more room to retreat in. We will see what Saigon HQ does in the next chapter.

Hearts of Iron 3 (Their Finest Hour AAR): ‘The March of the Machines’
Chapter Forty-Six : April to June,1942

jyZTNy4.jpg

The Japanese Take The Philippines

Before we get into the details about each Front, let us go over a overview. First thing I did was give the USA two objectives. One was Hanoi, northern Indochina, on the hopes they will come to help me defend it against the Japanese. The other objective is Sevilla, the capital of Republican Spain, on the hopes they will send enough reinforcements into the Front to stop the Axis were advancing. They don't need to send much to take advantage of the terrain.

By the 4th of April I noticed the 4e Group de Bombardement (the Tactical Bombers) were now stationed in Hanoi. They would nothing for the next three months as the Saigon HQ would have nothing for them to attack.

On the 5th of April another Underground Resistance cell was ready to be deployed. I placed it in Strasbourg. I also noticed that the Italians and Germans in Africa have mostly disappeared leaving behind a lonely Italian Tank Division. I assume the Axis AIs had been pulled back to cover the ports along the African coast.

By the 7th I had decided that the Submarines would be more useful in the Far East and assigned half of them to the Saigon HQ.

On the 8th if April I also decided I needed a name change for the two HQs. So Beirut HQ was renamed the African HQ and the Saigon HQ was renamed the Asian HQ. The Dakar HQ, which I still can’t seem to disband because I can’t find that last province, was renamed Worthless HQ.

8SOalfi.jpg

On the 13th of April my first unit built since the Fall of France was auto-deployed to Hanoi, being assigned to the Asian HQ. It was redeployed to the port of Saigon - which makes sense as the Chinese protect the northern border of Indochina but our Navy would not be able to stop a Japanese invasion from the sea.

On the 28th of April the Bordeaux Underground Cell spread into Marmande.

By the 23rd of May I assigned all African Army units to the African HQ and all Navy units were assigned to the Asian HQ.

On the 4th of June a new Underground Call spread into St. Die from Strasbourg. On the 17th of June the Underground also spread into Versailles.

tqD9JEO.jpg

Technology wise we seemed pretty slow for the three months. We had Education advance to Level 3 while we also gained Light Artillery Level 4. We tossed Militia Anti-Tank Weapons (4) , Supply Production (5), plus a few other techs into the Research list. We don’t have enough points for what I want or what I need but I am going to try to get what I can get anyway.

iAuhKhu.jpg

Now, before getting into the Fronts, let us look at the War At Sea!

The Navy

First, the French Navy sunk ten convey ships and four escorts. About half Japanese and half Italian ships. We lost, mostly to the Japanese, twenty-four convey transports and twelve escorts.

In the Mediterranean the Germans have placed Naval Bombers in Africa and the result was that they carried out five Naval Strikes which did a ton of damage to my subs - sinking FOUR Flotille of Submarines. These subs were trying to leave the Mediterranean via the Strait of Gibraltar and some Flotille did escape. Good thing they did too.

a8gDhVu.jpg

The Italians only launched one Port Strike. I don’t think they have the range to hurt me at the moment.

In the Pacific it was just as horrible. The Japanese launched five Port Strikes and forty-one Naval Strikes, sometimes in support of their Navy during Naval Battles. As this Strikes were against weak, small, groups of French ships with no supplies or fuel just arriving on the scene after a long trip from the Mediterranean, the damage caused really hurt, forcing many ships to stay in port much of the time.

9SX6zDm.jpg

And the five Naval Battles we had in the Far East were against Japanese Aircraft Carriers. The French lost every one of them. And lost badly. The fifth Battle not screen captured was a defeat with no loses. Now let us talk of the Fronts.

The Spanish Front

First off I noticed many of the Spanish Divisions were in fact English, New Zealanders and Aussies in Republican uniforms. I also noticed, on the Axis side, that a large amount of Hungarian Divisions were not fighting on the battle lines.

p3TZhQM.jpg

As you can see on the 15th of April image the Allies have counter-attacked. It looks like the units selected to break into the Spanish right flank were taken from the Axis’s Center, making it weaker. But there is a danger that the Axis units will cut off the Allies’ advance before the Allies can cut off the Axis’s advance.

Xruf85T.jpg

By the 15th of May the Axis have turned the Allies’ Counter Attack into a Pocket, cutting it off from supplies. You can also see one of my Submarine packs trying to escape the German Naval Bombers

1QXnKF7.jpg

A German Tiger In Spain
By the 28th of May I remove the Objective Tag from Sevilla which is occupied by the Italians. Bringing in the Americans now would be terrible - they would have to fight dug-in defenders using a few ports to bring in all their supplies. All the advantages would belong to the Axis.

On the 5th of June, for some reason, the 43rd Indian Division leaves Gibraltar to try to retake the province of Velez-Malaga from the Italians. Funny enough all the Italian Divisions in Southern Spain seem to be German soldiers in Italian uniforms. Always, the Germans pretending to be Italians notice this and by the 12th of June march into Gibraltar without a shot being fired in defense. The Strait of Gibraltar is now blocked to French and Allied shipping.

By the 15th of June it is clear that Spain will not be able to hold off for much longer.

The Greek Front

QgbKYfi.jpg

I finally just decided to use one image - the screen shots all look the same. The Greeks are holding out still. I can only assume that the conflicts in Spain and Africa has delayed them being crushed by the Axis powers.

The African Front

There are three Ground Battles between the Allies forces and the lone Italian Tank Division left behind to hold them back.

AGuumKg.jpg
hmbJn0R.jpg

The Allies win two of them and lose one of them. The amount of soldiers lost are impressive when you realize the damage is being delivered from only on Tank Division.

QplN0x0.jpg

The Italians lost 2,681 soldiers while the French and their Allies lost 4,277.

Yet, the Italian Division would start to withdraw westwards with great speed after the last battle in late June. In doing so it is giving up a bunch of provinces to the advancing French, British, and Iraqi units. The only thing I can think of is that one Division can’t lose almost three thousand soldiers and still survive future battles. So I think the Italian AI is pulling it back to join other units or to get replaced by fresh units. Either way, the Allies are taking advantage.

So the total for the whole war is now:
Germans/Italians: 87,126
French/Allies: 211,869

But there is another front we will talk about in which the French don’t even have a hand in!

The Battle For The Philippines And The Far East

The forces in the Philippines fighting the Japanese were a mixed of local soldiers and American troops.

025Pw2u.jpg
PojU0Cg.jpg

Highlighting some of the stacks showed me that both General MacArthur AND General Eisenhower were present on the main island.

fcdR4dy.jpg

Sadly, this would not help the defenders, as in the end the Japanese would slowly cut them down and take the capital, claiming the Philippines by the 16th of June.

Another event that happened in the Far East was the Japanese landing Marines into Teluk Anson on the 14th of June. This meant they were endangering not just Singapore but the whole of Malaya. The Marines would be followed by more Divisions. I assume they did this because Singapore was too hard to hit from the sea.

3x4qCTa.jpg

So, the French Navy is in bad shape, our Army is doing better, and our Air Force is...resting. The rest of the planet is going down hill. Either way, after recording this session I had Indian food. Hmmm....

Thanks for reading! Hope you join me in the next chapter. What will happen next? Alien invasion? The Soviet Union will DO something? The Americans DO something?

The rest? Yikes ! This is starting to look like the dark before the end, rather than the dawn :(. Or the beginning of the end <stop>.

Whatever - a few well-placed French insults might turn the tide

I think it will take more then insults to turn the tide. The Japanese seem to be doing pretty well. I assume their Battleships and Cruisers are in battles with the Americans and UK because I have not seen them. Still, they don't seem interested in Indochina and the Allies have taken some islands from them so the fight in the Pacific is not as one-sided as it looks.

I'd wish you luck, but as it's all out of your control it's a bit of an odd one. It doesn't look good, but who knows, maybe the German AI will screw it up badly.

Hearts of Iron 3 (Their Finest Hour AAR): ‘The March of the Machines’
Chapter Forty-Seven : July to September,1942

Waiting For News

Welcome to Chapter Forty-Seven of this AAR of Their Finest Hour! The French Navy is spread out and trying to recover from the battles with the Imperial Japanese Navy, the French Army in Africa is putting up a fight, and our Air Force, if a hundred aircraft can be called such, is gathering dust in a lone airbase in Indochina. The Japanese has taken the Philippines and seem to be going after Singapore next while their European partners are about to deliver the final death blow to the Republic of Spain after closing off the Strait of Gibraltar. And Greece...well, Greece is still Greece last we saw.

Before we start let me state that the Province of St. Pierre et Miquelon was the one province that I could not find that made Worthless HQ so hard to disband. A small French island near St John's, Canada. Just in case future AAR players have issues with the French HQs.

Where to start? Let's try a basic overview of the three months. First the French Resistance is growing as by the end of this time period we have seven new Underground Cells in France. We have eight but lost one.

64k3QUA.jpg

Also Technology marches on, somewhat, even as the world collapses around us.

JIBYDF4.jpg

1st of August my Asian HQ was wiped out and Saigon HQ was reborn. At that point I realized that Worthless HQ might be useful as Naval Operations and is put in charge of the surface ships.

On the 8th of September Romania started to mobilize their armed forces. Not sure who they plan to go to war with. The Axis or the Communists. Guess it don't rightly matter to me, being as it really will not help me either way.

The Naval War

Y7gO97P.jpg
tTVacD9.jpg

For the French Navy much of the fighting happened in the Far East against the Japanese Navy. Four surface Naval Battles which seemed to do very little to slow down the Japanese forces in the Pacific happened off the coast of South East Asia. Much of the ships, having been handed over to newly renamed Naval Operations, started to head to Africa - see the Indochina Front.

The French lost twenty-six transports and five escorts while the Axis, mostly the Japanese, lost seven transports to the French submarines.

The Air War

kBNO7Gw.jpg

The one Tactical Wing launched a Naval Strike against Japanese ships off the coast of Haiphong - see the Indochina Front.

The Japanese launched two Ground Attacks, in which they killed 306 French soldiers, eight Port Strikes, and twenty-four Naval Strikes.

Neither the German Air Force or the Italian Air Force attacked us. I can only assume they were busy in Spain, Greece, or elsewhere.

The Ground War

Let us start with the most important Ground Front of the conflict, at least from the French point of view.

The Indochina Front

Indochina became a Front on the 14th of July when the Japanese started landing troops on the beaches of Haiphong - which the French aircraft tried to stop. A day later the Japanese Marines were marching through the province of Haiphong and spreading out to the inland provinces. By the 21st of July the Japanese Divisions were moving into Hanoi and had forced the French to move their Capital to Saigon.

Su05Z5R.jpg
afXz9fX.jpg

Amazingly the Japanese forces would move very slowly duing August and September, covering very little ground, and only being able to wipe out the Asian HQ unit during that period of time (which I have pointed out was replaced by the freshly created Saigon HQ). Of course, I would later realize that they were pretty spread out and did not see Saigon as a important target. Let us talk about them being spread out all over the...

The Pacific Theatre

The Pacific Theatre was amazing to watch. I noticed that the Japanese not only had Midway Island but have captured many of the American islands all the way to Christmas Island. I can only guess at why they failed to take Hawaii.

VffXzYU.jpg

The Japanese and Allies seem to enjoy fighting over Medan and the other islands. But much of what the Japanese gain they seem to keep. I can only assume the Japanese are too busy with the Dutch, the UK, the USA, and the others to worry about Indochina. The Japanese even invaded New Guinea on the 14th of July.

The Spanish Front

The 15th of July showed me that Spain was really just a matter of time before it died. In fact the small pocket of UK soldiers, wearing Spanish uniforms, was wiped out on the 3rd of August.

GFHKVTM.jpg

B6nGVML.jpg
ayt0Y2a.jpg

By the 15th of August the only Spanish units still fighting were in the Northwest. It still existed by the end of September but to be honest I don't think it would last that long.

The Greek Front

Sadly, the Greek Front would change around the 15th of September as the Axis finally made a go for Athens. By the 17th Athens was in the hands of the Axis and by the 23rd of September mainland Greece was totally under control of the Axis.

bJcZvJT.jpg
wVJcBTy.jpg

W9hFSNK.jpg

The African Front

The African Front would move back and forth as the Axis and Allies fought over the sand dunes and salt plains. The only interesting event would be the UK landing troops in, what I would call a foothold, the province of Alger.

9rkgqUq.jpg

vw3ysgC.jpg

By the end of the three months the Axis forces had lost 1,679 Soldiers while France had lost 2,645 Soldiers in the African and Indochina Fronts.

So the total for the whole war is now:
Germans/Italians: 88,805
French/Allies: 214,514

So that is what has happened for the last three months. Some events were bad, some events were shiny, and a lot of the events will have no impact on France at all. But thanks for reading and let us see what is in store for France in the future. See you next chapter!
