Hearts of Iron 3 (Their Finest Hour AAR): ‘The March of the Machines’
Chapter Forty-Nine : January to March,1943

QLqfxhe.jpg

Who Invaded Who?

A few things happen that will change the whole course of the war. But many of them may have made things HARDER for France not better. First, a little overview of the political events that happened during the three months and some changes that happened to the French military.

On the 30th of January a new Infantry Division finally was deplored to the Middle East, to Beirut, under the direct command of the African HQ. The 3eme Division d'Infanterie Nord-Africaine is made up of three Infantry Brigades. 9,000 soldiers.

LnnA3io.jpg

On the 1st of February I changed the Civil Laws to Repression. It felt wrong to do so, as doing such a thing was what many Americans feared during our Cold War years. That we would slowly become our enemy. And now France, in a game, is slowly losing what makes it a Democracy. But I either win the war or die. I don't have much of a choice.

The Saigon HQ, along with much of the Armed Forces in Indochina, were wiped out around the 5th of February and the AI made a new Theatre HQ called Pondicherry - which had little to do as much of the French in Asia were all dead but for the 2nd Army HQ.

On the 11th of February the Soviet Union declared war on Germany. In doing so, by being the attacker, it basically declared war on the Axis.

6LyveDy.jpg

Japanese declared war on Communist China on the 20th of February and Sinkiang started to mobilize the day after, no doubt in reaction to this.

In March, on the 7th, Yugoslavia joined the Axis and, then on the 15th of March, joined the war against Germany's enemies.

On the 10th of March a Infantry Division in Africa was wiped out (many of their men captured) by an Italian offensive. This means the Ground Forces have only TWO Infantry Divisions on the planet by the end of March. One of which is the Gnorf's Desert Grunts made up of 10,000 veterans. Our best unit.

Underground Resistance Cells

Zx2Jq8B.jpg

During this period we gained a total of seven new cells. With the Soviet Declaration of War on the Germans I ordered the surviving Cells, thirty-one in total, to do nothing and build up strength. The plan is to have them rise all at the same time when they are all ready. In other words, when all bases are 100% they will be ordered to start spawning resistance fighters.

Tech. Advances

6xPHLYN.jpg

During this period was gained two advances. Heavy Cruiser Anti-Aircraft Armament (3) and Battlecruiser Anti-Aircraft Armament (4). Which would have been much more useful earlier.

Naval War/Sub Warfare

On the 27th January, fearing that the Saigon HQ was trapped and about to be wiped out, all remaining submarines in the Far East was assigned to the Naval Operations HQ in Africa.

There were no surface battles and the Japanese launched two Naval Strikes against our subs. As the subs left the region the Japanese aircraft (and warships) would have nobody to attack during the months of February and March. At least nobody French. There were not even any Ground Attacks. I assume their Air Force had bigger fish to bomb.

We sunk one enemy transport and the Japanese sunk five of ours. Once again the low numbers have to do with us losing our Far East provinces and our Navy withdrawing to Africa.

Air War

What Air War?

Ground War

There were twenty-nine Battles with the Italians and Japanese. We won ONE. We lost 920 French soldiers killed in action (likely more as many battles ended without a proper announcement) and we also lost another 13,732 plus men as they were captured and taken to prisoner of war camps. The Japanese and Italians lost a total of 749 troops killed in action. Once again they may have lost more as after battle reports sometimes failed to appear. Battles just ended as if one side or the other just gave up. Most likely my side.

The Total Loses for the war for the Germans/Italians/Japanese is around 92,582 men.

While the Total Loses for the French/Allies are 220,997 soldiers. I did not count those captured.

Spanish Front

9DjneCe.jpg

The Spanish are holding out still but they only have one major mainland city left and once that goes they will have to give up unless they go into exile. I assume they are getting a lot of help from their Allies and therefore the survival of the UK is important. If the UK falls the Germans will likely be able to cut off the Spanish pocket from the outside world and starve it to death.

African Front/Alger Foothold

aSssVfi.jpg

Africa goes back and forth and Alger seems to be in trapped in a bottle between German and Italian forces. Once again, if the UK falls this will change everything. The French units in Africa may be trapped in enemy territory and wiped out.

KmdYw5O.jpg

Indochina Front

05Dkvgf.jpg

Totally one-sided. We lost it in the end. Well, at least our Capital in Beirut is safe. Nice beaches. Lots of sand to play with.

Soviet Front/Finland Front

9JTvp3H.jpg

While the Soviets are quickly gaining against the Fins they are losing ground to the Germans. Why did they declare war if they did not have the advantage? I thought the AI only declared war if it saw the numbers were to its advantage? I don't care if they mess up when I am playing Nationalist Spain but I need them to be effective now! Do something Stalin!

yHZwIsz.jpg

Soviet Far East/Communist Chinese Front

ZByWbFS.jpg

The Japanese are gaining ground on the Soviet Union AND Mongolia BUT the Communist Chinese are gaining ground on THEM! To me this was a sign that the Japanese might be having problems. Until I saw that the Japanese had taken the port of Vladivostok. Also the Pacific Theatre suggests otherwise.

Pacific Theatre

fQ2MA1z.jpg

While the Japanese and Americans play hot potato with the islands the Japanese forces have almost taken all of Borneo and are threatening to take all of New Guinea. They have captured a lot of important provinces from both Australia and New Zealand and unless stopped I foresee them taking both nations out.

U.K. Front

uaRMfgt.jpg

Not good as you can see. London fell around the 26th of February AFTER the USSR declared war on Germany. It was taken by the Italians (many of which are Germans in Italian uniforms) who now are marching towards Scotland. Some Americans units are appearing on the battlefields but too little and too late I fear.

In the end it all depends on two things. Can the UK survive? And can the Soviets win? And neither look good at this point. Will the French uprising help when it happens? Or will it just delay the Axis Victory? We will see next time.

Thanks for reading!
Great to have another update! You have returned to another traditionally worsening situation, but at least the Soviets finally joined in. The rest? :( Ah well, but it makes a good story

Very much so. Doubleplusbad.

Well, I love alternate history. It has to do with my love of Sci-Fi. Or...the BA in History I got so many years also. Or I am too lazy to intervene. :D

Italians invading the UK omgz!!!

Well, some are Germans in Italian uniforms. But yes, looks like the Italian AI is taking the whole 'Bring Back The Roman Empire' thing very seriously. Go figure.

:D

Those machines have had you marching to a different drum!

Now it was the British that designed the Centurion tank right at the end of the war. Perhaps some cosmic vibe leaked between OTL and this alternate one ...

Hey folks,

Worked my way slowly through April and May. About to start June. Just wanted to give you a tiny taste of what is happening. And why it may take me some time distilling a lot of information into the next chapter.

AwzaSg8.jpg

Buwahahahahaha!

And remember we must all pull together to fight for the freedom of France. And to do so, we are taking away all your freedoms.

And if you don't like it you can just talk to the President's new press secretary.
BPJyAJ6.jpg

He's new.

Hearts of Iron 3 (Their Finest Hour AAR): ‘The March of the Machines’
Chapter Fifty : April to June,1943

QZ2nFRh.jpg

Spring Time In The USSR

During this time period we have many interesting events. My first massive nation wide revolt. Never tried that before. But also one Front closes, one Front is reopened, and one Front is created. First, a little overview, talking about technology first and then the major events.

Tech. Advances

CtDG49B.jpg

We completed Civil Nuclear Research to the first level, allowing use to start building a Nuclear Reactor (and where would I put it?), and we also completed Battleship Anti-Aircraft Armament (3). I left Civil Nuclear Research on the list while adding Coal to Oil Conversion (2) and First Aid (3).

On the 1st of April I told all the Underground Resistance cells, all thirty-one of them, to rise up and break their yoke. It didn't work as planned. As you can see they lost in the end.

yVrS2ov.jpg

The Revolters (which isn't a word but the game uses it) and the Partisans came in two waves (as it only take 50% of the cell's manpower to produce a unit). So the first wave was on the 1st of April and the second was on the 2nd of April. Both were massive waves of units - we took Paris back on day one! After that units would be produced in ones and twos as cells tried their best to make more. The problem was that as units liberated provinces the cells would disappear. Also, the Germans found and destroyed two cells. One in Bordeaux and one in Dieppe. By the end of the French Rebellion I had one cell left in Cognac who was told to stop spawning and start spreading again.

In the end, did this help France? Well, yes. At the height of the rebellion France had over 30 plus IC! It allowed us to produce a new Infantry Division. It also took a few airbases away from the Axis Air Forces and forced the Axis powers to turn their attention onto France. I am not sure how much this helped the other Fronts but I think it helped a little (see Air War).

We also held Paris till the 10th of May when we had to move to the new Capital Lyon. Sadly, this province was close to the Italian advance and was soon being fought over. In fact a few Corps and HQ units were shattered and reformed in Beirut. So the Capital had to be moved to Dijon on the 24th of May. By the end of May, on the 31st, Beirut was the Capital of France again.

By the 7th of June the last province was captured by the Germans and the last Freedom Fighters were wiped out.

The cost? There were two hundred twenty-two Ground Battles in which our civilians won forty-nine of them. Not a lot but please remember that this are citizens with hunting rifles and home-made bombs. They only were able to kill 462 enemy soldiers but remember that these were not just Germans and Italians. There were soldiers from the minor powers also, from Eastern Europe, soldiers who could have been fighting against the Soviet bear. Bulgaria and Yugoslavia both had Divisions in France.

MTFAgYO.jpg

Remember Us

But let us bow our head in prayer for those 8,006 French Heroes who died in the ground combat. And they were not the only ones (see Air War).

What else happened during this time period? Well, there is a few things that happened outside of France.

Romania joined the Axis on the 14th of April and joined in the war on the 28th of April. None of their units showed up to fight the French as they became busy with the USSR.

On the 20th of June Portugal refused to give Italy Transit Rights but changed its mind on the 28th of June.

We got a new Infantry Division on the 22nd of May, the 2eme Division d’Infantereie, but had to wait till Beirut was the Capital again (on the 31st of May) otherwise it would have been deployed in France and that would have been suicide.

Air War

The African HQ sent the 4e Groupe de Bombardement to Paris, France, to help the rebellion. They were to have two Air Battles on the way there, which they won, but failed their one Ground Attack, being attacked twice by German Air Units. So two Victories and two Defeats. After that, having lost half their pilots and planes, they spent the rest of their time bouncing around available airbases in France till they were brought back to Beirut on the 29th of May.

7NvyYEZ.jpg

The Germans launched eighty-three Ground Attacks, killing 15,103 civilians, while the Italians launched thirty-five Ground Attacks, killing another 3,248 civilians.

Those are Air Units tied up fighting in France. Air Units that could have been bombing enemy units in the UK, Spain, or Russia.

That means, that for the three months, the Axis lost a total of 462 soldiers. While the French people lost over 26,357 citizens. All of them people rising up - school teachers, engineers, teenagers, mothers, fathers, postmen, milk maids - civilians each and every one.

That makes the TOTAL Loses for the war at:

Axis: 93,044 Soldiers

French/Allies: 247,354 Citizens

Revolts

The French were not the only ones in revolt. In Southern Spain two groups of Spanish Freedom Fighters, backed by the US, rose up on the 4th of April. By the 15th they were encircled, by the 25th they had been wiped out, and by the 30th all provinces were occupied by the Italians again.

On the 22nd of June two units of Freedom Fighters rose up in Belgium. They were still going strong by the end of June but I don’t have much hope. Europe is now full of combat hardened Axis units - soldiers use to the grim job of pulling down freedom with knife and rifle.

Navy/Sub Warfare

On the 3rd of April I gave all surface ships to African HQ, on the hopes it would use the Transport Unit to take the new Division from Beirut and into the African Front to join the Grunts. As of the end of June it was still deploying the ships to the Middle East.

We sank no enemy shipping but did lose seven cargo ships and two escorts.

Ground War

You already know what happened in France, so let us go over the other Fronts.

Spanish Front

8tT9g2j.jpg

The Spanish were not helped by the French Revolt. They got cut in two by the Italians and crushed. Shame, the Republicans were putting up a good fight. So this Front is closed.

UK Front

14O2Ys0.jpg

Sometimes happened. Maybe the Italians put too many Divisions into Ireland. Maybe too many got pulled back for some reason. But the Brits pushed them back. Let us hope they can push them back even more.

In fact the UK landed some troops behind the Italians in Preston, right next to Liverpool, on the 1st of April. But this rear landing failed and was wiped out by 3rd of April - so I can’t see how it could have threatened the Italians that much.

Soviet Front/Finland Front

nkFNT2W.jpg

As you can see, the USSR is not winning but could still win it if, for example, the Americans decided to join in the war IN force. Of course, the US could be busy in the Pacific. And Finland is about to get completely wiped off the map.

GLPI9mV.jpg

Soviet Far East/Communist China Front

XskGjTN.jpg

The USSR is also not winning against the Japanese. And the Communist Chinese are being contained. On the other hand I am kind of surprised they have not been wiped out by the Japanese yet.

African Front/Alger Foothold

pidNvMr.jpg

The African Front seems frozen. On the other hand it looks like the Germans are pushing the UK back in Alger. Still, the British are tough nuts - so I prefer to take a wait-and-see with my tea-drinking Allies.

eEXC3Wq.jpg

Pacific Theatre

RWU21Gj.jpg

Outside of the Japanese and Americans still passing islands back and forth (the US took back Christmas Island), not much has changed in the bigger picture.

New Zealand Front

6QaqgoK.jpg

On the 2nd of April I realized that Japanese units were already invading the north island of New Zealand. In fact they had already taken half of it. By the 3rd of June the New Zealand Capital was moved to Christchurch. By the 9th of June the Japanese were landing in Blenheim, having crossed over from the north island.

Greek Front

hWXRmpO.jpg

The Greek Front has been reopened as the Italians decided to invade Crete on the 21st of June - no doubt wishing to end the Greeks once and for all. OR just having a surplus of Divisions to use from other Fronts they decided to use them. Either way, I wonder how long the Greeks will last?

And, just to show you what is left of the French Armed Forces:
qbCWkcF.jpg

So, thanks for reading. What will happen next time? Will the Fins and Greeks fall? Will New Zealand become part of the Japanese Empire? Will the UK be able to kick out the Italians? If the UK becomes a Puppet of the Axis what will happen in Africa? Will my Capital end up in South America? Will the food be too spicy for me? Will the women not be spicy enough?

Those infantry are sadly lacking any support units, doesn't that hurt them alot when fighting?

Sometimes. Remember most of the support units went to those units in Europe. On the other hand, at the start of the war, much of the Italian units they were fighting (in Africa) were militia so it was okay.

Now they are facing tanks and regular soldiers BUT do have support from the UK units (and sometimes air support from them also).

Keep fighting that good fight. Although doomed, the rebellion must still have been a bit of fun, having that much home soil under control for a while!

If the same scale of uprising could be staged during a proper invasion of France, it could be of major importance.

Yes - I was kind of hoping that the uprising would help the USSR by drawing away more units but it looks like the Axis has units in reserve and it did little to the big picture.

And it did help increase my industrial output for a month or two. Now we are back to normal which means we are back to barely keeping the armed forces on the field. And all your chocolate rations have been reduced to twenty grams. :D

Chapter Fifty-One : Beirut - Paris of the East

vo9TaSZ.jpg

Beirut - Capital Of France
Welcome to Beirut! The Capital of France and the home of the French government. A wonderful and very modern city with the many flavors of the Middle East.

FJoxmh0.jpg

Enjoy The Many Open Air Markets

People first started to settle into the area around the Middle Paleolithic and Upper Paleolithic, according to several archaeological sites discovered within the urban area of Beirut itself!

Of course we have come a long way from the Stone Age! First the Greeks, then the Romans brought such inventions as bath complexes, theaters, and such. Under the Romans its law school was widely known which is where the city likely gained its Latin Motto "Berytus Nutrix Legum". Which means "Beirut, mother of laws".

3mrugQp.jpg

The Perfect Place For A Government-In-Exile

In the Middle Ages the city was passed on to Arab control where, for a brief period, it became the center for trade.

The Ottomans conquered Syria, including present-day Lebanon, but the region had a history of rebellion. By the second half of the 19th Century the city's powerful families were developing close ties with European powers, particularly France. European interests in Lebanese silk and other exports made it a major port. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, following World War One, Lebanon was placed under French Mandate.

Now Beirut is a very modern city, with a mixture old and new standing side-by-side.

Enjoy Many Tourist Spots

Tourist are welcome to enjoy the many museums, the wonderful shopping, thousands of years of history, and, of course, the local Lebanese cuisine. Welcome to the Paris of the East. Visit for the history and stay for the flavor!

Chapter Fifty-Two : July to September,1943

DMhK1Dt.jpg

New Zealand's Bob Semple - Its A Tank

Welcome to Chapter Fifty-Two! Let us start with a overview of this period, as we normally do, right? Right!

First, Persia joined the Axis on the 4th of July and I noticed that by the 20th of July it had already taken the province of Esenguly from the Soviet Union. It was invading the USSR? A day later it joined German in war with the nations of the Allies.

Finland falls on the 15th of July to the Soviet Union right when I started to take screenshots for the Front screenshots for the 15th of July. So one less Front to worry about.

fjo3jGH.jpg

On the 18th of July I noticed some German-occupied provinces of Norway were becoming Soviet-occupied provinces of Norway. It was happening VERY slowly but it was happening. I wondered if the Germans even had anybody trying to defend those territories? Did they even care?

On the 25th of July the Soviet Union gained Transit Rights from Afghanistan. This will, no doubt, allow them to hit Persia from the Eastern flank. If they have the men for such an attack.

A minor event happened on the 8th of August when Portugal granted Transit Rights to Germany. I am not sure why - maybe to keep on the Axis's good side?

On the 11th of August the Italians started moving down the coastline of Western Africa, grabbing French provinces and provinces from the Allies. This would become a problem as the African HQ decided, around the 20th of August, to try to send the 3eme Infantry Division to Dakar, Africa. Right in the pathway of the advancing Italians.

siX655j.jpg

Italian Tank Crew Resting

By the 29th of August the Italians had taken Dakar and the Transport ended up going right back to Beirut. Where it dropped off the 3eme and picked up the 2eme and took them to Bur Said, dropping them off into the African Front. Which was somewhat okay - it was using the Transports in a way which I had hoped it would. Then it ran into trouble (see Navy/Sub Warfare).

At this point I decided to move all active units to the African HQ and disbanding the Sub Operations HQ. The Italians were absorbing provinces left and right in Africa, forcing French and British ships to rebase themselves elsewhere.

Which was STUPID. Because now the African HQ would start to panic, having the WHOLE planet to protect with only a hand full of units. It would send the 3eme to Africa (again) and this time have it land in Boke and THEN start marching over land to Douala - thousands of miles away. In fact, the Transports passed Douala (and its port) to get to Boke. So this makes no sense. As the Italians are to the NORTH and it is marching EAST.

On the 31st of August I adjusted some of the convey routes to try to keep some of my ships out of the Pacific (see Navy/Sub Warfare) due to the Japanese sinking a lot of our cargo ships. The AI adjusted it again when I was not looking.

And then there was also the horrible lose of the Grunts! On the 21st of September the Germans crossed the Suez and took a province that Gnorf's Desert Grunts were retreating into. 9,000 hardened veterans were captured!

On the 23rd of September Italy finally conquered Greece - not sure how after all this time. A day later the USSR declared Great Patriotic War. So they are not doing so well.

D9LZywz.jpg

Research was very slow. But I did do one thing - I was able to share with the USA our Civil Nuclear Research. So if we can build a reactor in a few decades they should be able to build one within a few months. I hope.

Underground Resistance Cells

YjbdVX5.jpg

With the founding of a brand new Cell and the creation of two others by budding we now have a total of FOUR! Glory to the French Rebellion!

The rebellion in Belgium was wiped out before the 15th of July so I didn’t even bother with a screenshot.

Navy/Sub Warfare

There was the Battle of the Nile Delta in which we WON! But it was between Transports so I doubt anybody was able to hurt each other. Did they use machine guns?

0lcsGtl.jpg

cGuSVjJ.jpg

We lost ten cargo ships and one escort while the Axis lost no shipping from us. Much of this was due to the Japanese hitting conveys going to French islands in the Pacific.

Air War

What Air War?

Ground War

This was horrible! The UK Divisions would start a Battle and then withdraw leaving behind the French Divisions to fight against three to four times their own number. There were eleven Ground Battles in which we won two.

The Total Loses for the Time Period were:

German/Italians Lost : 3,363 Soldiers

French/Allies Lost : 5,407 Soldiers (PLUS the 9,000 Grunts Captured!)

This makes the TOTALS for the Whole War:

Axis Lost : 96,407 Soldiers

French/Allies Lost : 252,761 Soldiers and Civilians

Greek Front

Ow2FrEq.jpg

The Greeks either wiped out the Italians or somehow forced them into the sea. Then the Greeks surrendered on the 23rd of September.

African Front/Alger Foothold

I06px5N.jpg

We seem to be losing on both Fronts. The Germans are pushing the UK in the Alger Foothold and the Italians are gaining ground quickly on the African Front. They, in fact, were crossing the Suez by the end of September.

UK Front

5LAdalE.jpg

Is this even a Front anymore? If the UK lose another 10 Victory Points they will be defeated. The Alger Foothold and the African Front hold more then enough points to push the UK over the edge and give the Axis the Victory.

Soviet Front

vBbY2WE.jpg

Germans On The Soviet Front

ZIA1lCM.jpg

It looks like the Marshes are slowing down the Axis advance but elsewhere along the Front the USSR is being pushed back.

Soviet Far East/Communist China Front
The Japanese seem to be doing well here. In fact I am wondering if they somehow have gotten more Manpower or something.

XgvGRSi.jpg

Pacific Theatre

xJTHoxx.jpg

I noticed on the 5th of July that the Americans were taking some islands from the Japanese with three Airborne Brigades (a Division). Now those soldiers were stuck on the island province of Ambon without a airbase. Of course the Americans could pick them up, in Japanese waters, with transports as their is a port. But why didn’t they use that Division to counter-invade New Zealand?

New Zealand Front

GRQeraH.jpg

As you can see, New Zealand was doomed. The Japanese overran the Capital on the 23rd of July, forcing the New Zealanders to switch it to Dunedin - I think. There was a HQ unit in the province - so I could not see the red dot. I can't even figure out why the Japanese have not conquered them yet.

Persian Front

yfi5ouP.jpg

On the 1st of August I noticed Persia was invading the USSR. At the very same time the USSR AND IRAQ was invading the Persians. Seems the USSR found a nation they could finally handle - besides Finland. And then the UK, with Allies, came in from India.

Australian Front

9DmhVsF.jpg

On the 18th of August the Australian Front came into existence when the Japanese Marines landed in Sydney. A new Front is born. They have forced the Land-Down-Under to switch their Capital city twice. Yet it LOOKS like the Australians have enough units arriving to maybe hold them and, maybe, push them back.

Well, it looks like either we will live in a world controlled by the Axis OR the USA will save us all by blasting everything till it glows. Luckily, much of New France is not within Europe or Asia, so we should survive the Nuclear Fallout.

Thanks for watching! Will the UK survive? Will the New Zealand survive? Will Communist China survive? Will anybody survive if the US develops Atomic Bombs? And if they do will they use them properly? Doubt it. At least I can enjoy good food while safe in Beirut! See you next time!

Well Italy pulled another "of their textbook landings" in the center of Crete.

Looks like the World "may" be turning into the largest stalemate-salad I've yet seen.:)

Oh...and the NZ tank? Looks like they had not received the message about "sloping-sides".

1. Well, the Italians won in the end

2. My HoI3 game always end up in some kind of stalemate when I play past the Victory Ending.

4. The NZ Tank is thought of being one of the worst tanks of World War Two.
