For some reason when I broke through it it really slowed down my game; much more so than when I invaded through the Low Countries. Very strange.

How easily have you penetrated it? In my current game, my forces easily penetrated it and have driven deep into France in the 4 months since I started the war.

Here's a screenshot of the advances Germany has made so far.

Pretty easy. Used TACs to destroy infra, then on interdiction. I put a wing of four doing days and a wing of four doing nights with a night-flyer to maximize air without the stacking penalty (I think a wing of five maxes air power with the stacking penalty, but who cares). Assault with mostly infantry/art on the most surrounded squares with fortress buster leaders, avoiding as much river while maxing out the frontage. There's a province beside a VP province that is a good candidate.

The battle starts at really low numbers, like you are losing, but creeps up and you win.

That was my problem then, I was going to bust through the french line but it looked like I was losing so I just went through the low countries and took 'em from behind instead :p

Hmm, did not someone use the same tactisc before? Sometime in 1940? :D However in my game I am on the other side, trying to stop Germans in Netherland as France :)

I did some experimental work on the maginot line as germany the other week.

Turned out that the French moved a large bulk of their forces down from the belgian border to bolster the defense and then started massive counter attacks (that I barely managed to stop). The Dutch also attacked along the northern border and pressed to cut off wilhelmshaven. I had to employ my firebrigade and some paratroopers to cut the dutch off. They however managed to retreat with most of their divisions before I could close the gap.

I eventually managed to break through the maginot line, but it was NOT worth it in terms of time and resources spent.

I played on normal difficulty.

Maybe a probing attack around the southern end of Maginot - the furthest that the French forces would have to go - following up with the invasion of Benelux would have the greatest effect then? The French assume they're going the way they're expecting and react to such a move, then you punch through the Ardennes with your armoured spears and hey presto, you're taking control of northern France while the French Army re-organises in the south...by the time they react, you're in Paris, Calais, Dunkirk, Lille, Amiens and Belgium are yours and the French spirit is in collapse.

Never tried to breakthrough because of the low numbers when you start the attack. Used the standard way with breaking through the low lands, while binding several French divisions at the Maginot line so they couldn't support the defence in the north.

I remember that in HOI 2 the Maginot Line was, as should be, a very thick line of level 5 > land forts, which required an hard side-working with CAS tacs and bombers...if not properly encircled from north.

in HOI 3 the Maginot Line is a paper thin line of level 1 forts.....

actually, Torino in Italy and some provinces on the greek northern border are much more fortified.

Is this WAD?

There is a weird bug were forts sometimes show up as lvl 1 forts. Check the province at different times and it moves from level 1 to level 10 fort, then back again.

No idea if this is just an interface bug or it actually changes the level for combat calculation.

It was easy to punch through especially after French started panically repositioning their forces once they saw my tanks in Belgium but I had to leave parts of it behind me. For example de Gaulle fortified himself in Metz with 6 brigades so I chose to surround him and leave there for the rest of the war. Even bombed for a month and with no supplies he defended well and I wasn't able to chase him out despite constant harassment.

On another Thread it was mentioned that the differences shown were the variations in your Intelligence Reporting, not the real Fortification strength number. (You are the Enemy, remember? :p)

For the real fortification strength value you need to look in the Save Game file if you want to chea..t...er check! :D

This isn't true, but I'm guessing you didn't play Germany or France when you tried checking what level the forts where. All provinces are shown to have just one level of any improvement if they aren't in your line of sight ;)
The Maginot Line is a line of level 10 forts, not worth punching through, it costs much less to go around.

I went round the lowlands in one of my games as germany only to look back later and find that Hungry (my ally) had actually punched through the line.

In the french ai's defense it was pulling lots of units off the line to try to stop my lowlands invasion.
