I can half live with my retinue general, even flanks being lowborns. Perhaps Captain of the Guard or Sergeant at Arms or something. But why even when I group my retinue into a single force does each segment still retain it's own freaking lowborn. It means once you get to a certain size you have a huge amount of random lowborn courtiers clogging up your court.

But why even when I group my retinue into a single force does each segment still retain it's own freaking lowborn. It means once you get to a certain size you have a huge amount of random lowborn courtiers clogging up your court.

And then near the end of the game you have to deal with all of them constantly wanting every single council position. Is it so bad that I want my marshal spreading tech rather than leading a random retinue in Anatolia? I'll take a different tact here. Maybe retinues shouldn't be capable of having a leader. This would give an incentive to make sure that you use the retinues to supplement levies rather than as a professional standing army. I usually try to refrain from calling any particular change 'game-breaking' since most of the time it's just an issue of getting used to the change.

This is a bit different. With the way I've observed retinues working (that the same amount is subtracted from your realm regardless of whether you're using your full retinue or not) there's no reason not to create the biggest retinue you can afford. If you do this late in the game it will literally make the game no fun at all to play. I was close to putting all of Rome back together, but I quit because literally every week and a half I was getting spammed with requests by my 'generals' to become members of the council. It was infuriating. Then when I actually did want to appoint a general you have to scroll through a bunch of soldiers who are already deployed somewhere else.

Is there a way to mod the game so that it doesn't demand that every retinue has a leader?

Maybe a knight class could be introduced (lower-than-baronial nobility). They would make good generals, and historically that sounds much more plausible. Lowborn generals could than be the exception (merc leaders etc.)

Introducing a knight class separate from the baron+ nobles and the lowborns would be a good idea.

So peasants? If this is true then they shouldn't really be in the game.

How would they go about getting into court? Court Musician?
Not peasants... burghers are commoners too, as are the administrators of lower level land holders.

I've long been arguing that one should not actually be given such a large selection of flank commanders at all. What the hell is nobility good for when any duke or king can have his lowborn sergeant lead an army of 15,000  Your baron, count and duke and vassals SHOULD rebel and torch your castle in protest, if you asked them to follow such such jumped-up two-bit jackanapes into battle.

I'm all in favor of restricting army and flank command to, say, the five or eight highest ranked nobles ACTUALLY PRESENT in that flank. As is, you can basically appoint anyone to any army leader position, regardless of where he actually is (i.e. when you select a commander for an army in Scotland you may even appoint a guy who is already commanding a regiment in Anatolia....) Army leader appointment is sooooooooo horribly wrong!!!!

this was a cut out feature.
or more accurately, it was discussed in the dev-diaries before the game came out, yet was probably cut out somewhere during the creation process, which means they had a reason to do so.
