23rd February, its seemed like an ordinary cold morning to the citizens in Mostar except that the city was flooded with Austria-Hungarian soldiers. Rumours was spreading in the city that the army would make an new offensive to take back the lost province of Foca, they were dead wrong. A long the river of Neretva temporary trenches were constructed and no less then 13 000 soldiers were assigned to defend the river, this was the main army of the defence force. Their reserves where located north-west near the city itself and it consisted of 5 000 soldiers. Their artillery support wasn’t has big as the Serbs but they had heavier guns that had bigger firepower, a total of two artillery brigades where available to them. The artillery where located south-east to the city. The leader of the defence was von Hötzendorf a skilled general that had valuable experience after a dozen battles in the east against the Russian hordes.

General Bojokovic’s army group consisted of 36 000 soldiers that where divided in three infantry divisions. “The 4th infantry division”, “the 5th infantry division” and “the second Reserve infantry division“. With them three artillery brigades was available for the attack and Bojokovic decided to put the artillery higher up than the Austria-Hungarians had theirs. This was because they could interfere when the Austria-Hungarian decided to bring in the reserves and still reach the trenches. Suddenly hell broke loss, artillery shells landed on the defence positions and a inferno of explosion appeared. The Austria-Hungarian artillery returned the fire with all means necessary , a big artillery duel was taking place. After one hour of constantly bombarding the Serbs started their attack against their well fortified enemy.

battleofmostar.jpg

The strategic situation before the battle of Mostar

The Serbs advanced along the main road to Mostar, no serious casualties were received by the Austria-Hungarian artillery because they were focusing most of their firepower against the Serb artillery. The resistance was growing for each meter the Serbs advanced and eventually had to stop one kilometre from the river. They were sitting ducks for the machine gunner nests along the trenches. After regrouping more to the north closer to their own artillery they started the attack against the trenches, the losses were staggering, everywhere corpses of brave Serb soldiers could be found. After two hours of devastating fights the Serbs successfully drives the defenders back to the other side of the river with big losses. After have successfully captured the trenches Bojokovic decided to make a swift attack cross the river so the enemy don’t have any time to recover. He also redirected the artillery fire to there he believed the Austria-Hungarian reinforcement would come, he was correct. The Serb artillery made huge damage to the reserves that lost approx. 40% of their fighting strength. The Austria-Hungarian artillery was now focusing on the growing Serb beachhead, it made some great damage but it was to late, to much Serb soldiers had crossed the river and even if the remaining Austria-Hungarian soldiers made brave counter-attacks they were hopelessly outnumbered and their artillery was regrouping so they had lost their firepower. The last resistance surrendered the 24th just outside of Mostar.

The Austria Hungarian had lost 8 000 soldiers (1200 POW) and Serbs had lost staggering 11 400 soldiers in one day. They had now cleared the way to the coast but they had received causalities they couldn’t fill up and the defence was very stretched. When the Serb soldiers marched in Mostar they glanced with pride, they had beaten big brother Austria-Hungary once more.

Very soon unfortunately :(, I have taken nearly all pops that can be converted to soldiers, but I’m waiting for further reinforcement by the United Kingdom now that I have access to the coast. You can only hope...

France struggles to survive, no doubt about it. They don’t have the luxury of reinforcement like Germany have, but in another hand they don’t have two fronts worrying about. In early February the French army made an breakthrough outside Lille in the former Belgium province of Brugge. The offensive was very successful and they advanced to the national border of Netherlands. Back in the mother land the French soldiers have a hard time to stabilise the front after a row of devastating defeats the manpower and morale are catastrophic low. Currently a big battle in Charleville-Mezières is taken place, and the German soldiers are proving that good training is a key element. Will France survive this horrible war? Only time can tell.

westernfrontmarch.jpg

The Western front

The Eastern front has more good news than the Western front, the Russian have finally made an breakthrough between Germany and Austria-Hungary. If they advance further a gap will appear between the allied countries. This would definitely be devastating for the central power that already have a very hard time on the Eastern front. The Russians have advanced so deep so they can take the strong German defence in the back to make the Germans abandon their well fortified border. Austria-Hungary are having big troubles to stop the Russian offensive in the north-east, 300 000 Russian soldiers are advancing to stop the pressure for the Serbs, Romania and of course France.

Oh good Italy joined the war.

I played the 1914 scenario as Italy last night. Took about two provinces and spent the rest of the game assaulting Austrian trenches. My marine landing didn't do too well either, although it certainly helped distract Austrian divisions while Serbian soldiers took ground.

BTW why does Russia always tend to strick south towards Vienna? They rarely seem to want to go through Prussia like they tried IRL.

Sure its possible :), but I doubt it would happen in my game and I have a very good relationship with USA so I think I can make them declare war on the central powers. The Entente is so strong it looks, many of their divisions/ships is in India/Asia/south America. They have a more territory to control. Im glad that you enjoy my AAR :)

Haha! I have the same experience with Italy, its rare that you can crack the Austria-Hungarian defence line in the 1914 scenario. I don’t have any clue either why Russia always attack there, but it seems to work so I’m not complaining ;)

Thanks for reading :D

Last night I played again and managed to capture the trenches. How? Well...I waited until 1915/16 when the Austrians had moved their armies elsewhere, then joined France in an alliance. ;) I quickly sent troops out and snatched those trenches. Poor Austrians were wasting manpower trying to get back their old trenches, it was so sad...

General Bojokovic sat in his headquarters over some battle maps, he sighted and walked to the big window in the office. All he could see for miles was a grey landscape that literary had been shot to pieces. He could hear the Austria-Hungarian artillery far away from the north, the war had made a turn to Austria-Hungarian advantage, they had now stopped the Italian offensive in the west and they had reinforced the Serb front with fifteen new division, the situation was grim.

Bojokovic threw is cigar on the floor and cursed loud. How many more Serb soldiers would die for worthless soil like this? The font wasn’t stable, far from it. The massive Austria-Hungarian reinforcement around Foca had made a hard blow on the defence line and tested the Serb army to its limit, the Serb casualties was mounting high, to high. One time they were near to evacuate the headquarters because the Austria-Hungarian was advancing at the direction of Mostar, but after an incredible effort the brave Serb soldiers some how successfully stopped the advanced against the three time bigger enemy. But the end was near, the last Reserve had arrived in Foca and it currently had approx. 23 000 defenders with two attached artillery brigades. The skill of the artillery officers had saved the Serbs many time from devastating defeats. For the moment the Austria-Hungarian concentrated their available divisions around the coast, the motive was easy, they tried to cut off the Serbs from the coast.

Bojokovic sighed again and picked up his cigar. Suddenly he heard a fast knocking on the door.

“Please come in” Bojokovic said tired

In steps an female secretary with an unusual face expression than Bojokovic wasn’t used to in the headquarters. She seemed happy?

“Herr General! The Englishmen has arrived!”

Once again Bojokovic’s cigar hit the floor.

“Olga, prepare my car”

“Yes sir!”, Olga saluted and walked with fast steeps out of the big office.

After driving thirty minutes to the coast in their fancy car with military escort they stopped at the Harbour. General Bojokovic stepped out of the car and is eyes were wide open. The scene was breathtaking, British ships were everywhere, Battleships, Cruisers, transports and even a brand new submarine was in the harbour. When Bojokovic just stood their and starred a small group of people was walking to the car. The group made halt in front of the car and made an salute.

britishnavy.jpg

United Kingdom to the rescue - The harbour of Dubrovik, May 1915

“Sir Bojokovic I presume?”
“Ye....es...”

They shook hands

“Sir William, pleased to meat you. We are here to honour our alliance against our common enemies.”

In the background British soldiers were pouring out from the ships, an endless stream of soldiers, Bojokovic had never seen so many soldiers in one place. The British army consisted of 52 000 soldiers with attached artillery brigades and was lead by Sir William.

“Me and the free people of Serbia is very gratefully for this action, Thank you”

Sir William smiled and shook Bojokovic’s hand once more, and they walked to the car to discuss. In the background more and more British soldiers marched out of the ships...

Quite good actually, the Australians still occupies Istanbul and the Russians are given them an hard fight in the east. The British are currently making an offensive around the Suez channel.
