...To show interesting statistics, which, as I imply in the comment you quoted, is something PDX devs teams tend to do? The Hoi4 team has a statistic dev diary every year, and I think others are the same.

Okay, but where did you get the daily active users stat from? What's the source? Can I go and get these figures as well, so I can show them in their full context instead of just the small snippet you showed to make it seem good?

This data is collected directly from Steam

What other reason would there be to post it other than to counter the (more objective) steamdb and steamcharts numbers?

I'm not trying to be overly negative, but when we got third party charts that disagree this heavily with Paradox's numbers it's fair to question them. If they didn't exist I wouldn't be doubting at all.

The reason for posting it is to provide the metrics we are working with and to show that Victoria 3 player numbers are looking good. The numbers are still from Steam, but as mentioned: We work with Daily and Monthly active users. Not concurrent or average player numbers.

I think at this point paradox should change victoria 3's name to something else and release a normal victoria 3 game to stop insulting the victoria series. The path this company has taken in the field of ui design, game design and details, flavour, mechanics and graphics and gradual reduction of quality greatly worries me ever since the release of ck3.

I’m going to step out of my comfort zone for a moment and be optimistic for the game. I look at that chart, and this is my takeaway:

When the devs implemented actual hands-off laissez faire economics, reducing the amount of immersion-breaking micro needed to play, the number of players jumped up by about 30%.

I have no proof thats a direct 1:1 cause and effect, nor do I have proof that that is the direction they should continue in to see similar growth. I do know that if the game continues in that direction far enough, I will buy it myself.

So, bravo.

Imagine going to the official forum of a game and doubting their numbers that they get directly from Steam instead of some third party websites lol.

Anyways, very happy to hear you like the numbers and I hope we will see a bright future for Vicky 3 together!

I just spend way to long staring at the steamdb charts. My conclusion was that the first 6 months of Victoria 3 were kinda typical for Paradox grand strategy games. Way better than Imperator at least. Given the push back on some of the core mechanics of Victoria 3, I think they have reasons to be (cautiously) optimistic.

However I do think posting this graph, without saying what exactly the numbers are, to say "line goes up" is not the best communication strategy. One could argue that maybe the core of the message is "thanks for your support and input" and that such a graph would be how the effects of that support would be shown in-game, but that seems farfetched.

To soften the communicated output of the worries of the community here (which are fair to assume players with more extensive experience with prdx franchise),
some things in VIC3 need a much needed overhaul and take the good things from VIC2.
This is a legitimate concern, with supported by people who look differently at the look & feel of VIC3. I would step into this demand and create a VIC 3 Classic version with good looking GUI but not high graphic demands, designed for long play sessions and more nuts and bolts in any direction.
To agree with you as dev team rep, the game is undoubtedly a commercial success for prdx.

Ok that's nice. But it's not going up quickly enough. We need more Victoria 3 to satiate the consumption of the masses.

Couldn't you try another production method? How about building a few more Paradox studio levels in Sweden? Maybe annexing another game studio?

(All jokes aside, congrats!)

Paradox is literally saying they are content with the evolution of V3 and implying they will develop it further. This is the important part in contrast to the "Imperator"-narrative that it will be abandoned because it performed worse than expected.

Even if the numbers were false and it would be pure propaganda, this is an important notification that we can expect further enhancements like patches or DLCs.

I'm a bit surprised that we can't accept this as good news, one way or another.

You shouldn't take anything a billion-dollar corporation says at face value. They're not your friends; they're interested in your cash first and foremost. And we already knew to expect DLC since the special edition promised it...

I trust a third party source far more than a dev who has a vested interest in the gaming appearing to be popular. The trend shown by steamdb and steamcharts over the past two weeks in undeniable.

To further that, your graph didn't even label the x-axis...
Billion dollar mega corp v. two independent sources. I know which one the average person should believe.

Do you have any insight (or, maybe, is it possible to share some insight) about a fraction of players who don't always use steam? For example, I play with steam on only when I want to register an achievement, but when I am testing a game with debug mode, modding, testing a mod, I am launching a game from a shortcut without steam. There was no question about this behaviour in recent survey, but maybe it was in some other surveys?

They have a clear motivation to make themselves look good to consumers and shareholders. Steam stats have no motivations other than to show the stats of all games, good or bad. But by all means, keep blindly believing everything Paradox tells you, asking 0 questions, and enjoy pre-ordering their future unfinished, broken releases.

You are thinking I am naive, but I'm not. In fact I said that even if they lied it would be good for us, because the main message is: stay tuned. We are lied to every day but in this case it has even advantages for us if Paradox is lying, because it shows they have still interest to sell us a V3-product when V3 is really doing bad.

Wouldn't that be a small tackle towards the imperator players? If this is the case it is not very fair play towards the players of a game which has been abandoned without explanation and without warning the players.

As you can tell from the developer diaries and open beta, the Victoria 3 team hasn’t really stopped working since we released the game back in October. We are very lucky to work on this title and are full of ideas. We have so much we want to share about what we are working on, and we will share news on that very soon.

Our enthusiasm is sustainable because your response to the game has been equally enthusiastic. The numbers don’t lie.

View attachment 959743

Our data shows that tens of thousands of people are playing Victoria 3 every day, a humbling reminder that we have the greatest and most dedicated fanbase one could ever wish for. And, of this number, a third of these players participated in open beta - which is an extremely high participation rate!

These numbers give us strength! Your input, whether it is through the open beta process or constructive feedback on the forum, Reddit or social media, has been invaluable in pushing us to keep revisiting and revising our beloved game.

With 1.2 now live, we’d like to take this chance to thank everyone who contributed feedback and comments during the open beta. Your participation in this community endeavor makes Victoria 3 a better game!
Isnt Paradox is a public company?

The comments in this thread prove that the Paradox forums need a clown reaction.

"Muh, they are actually content with the player numbers, but I really wanted to see the game fail, muuuhhh. Big Paradox is lying to you and you should not play this game, muuuh."

This is a really useless unhelpful response

They have a clear motivation to make themselves look good to consumers and shareholders. Steam stats have no motivations other than to show the stats of all games, good or bad. But by all means, keep blindly believing everything Paradox tells you, asking 0 questions, and enjoy pre-ordering their future unfinished, broken releases.
With all your critique of big corporations and their lust for money, you are surely aware that concurrent player numbers are only deemed so important because they reflect the success in the big-money genres of MOBAs and multiplayer first-person shooters semi-accurately? You know, the kind of game were enjoyment and playability directly correlates to the amount of fellow players in the game? And that money talks, and as such makes their metric the "standard" for games, no matter if it is actually useful to gauge engagement over the genres?

Paradox does mostly single player games. Which may be played one evening of the week, because other days are busy with IRL (like kids and family). Unique players reflects that far better. On the flip side, you shouldn't measure MOBAs with that metric.
You can be suspicious. But you are going about it with gutfeel instead of analysis. Calm down, sit down, read a book about the troubles of finding good KPIs and then try again.
