That's a shame - the idea the still pro-US state of Vermont surrounded by a sea of Commonwealth states sounded quite fun. Not during the war obviously, that would be the opposite of fun. Ahh well.Oops - thank you!
I am a bit surprised at the last line. What exactly did the Commonwealth leaders expect would happen after they seceded, that the rest of the US would happily wave them off with hugs and best wishes?
British backing as they are a anti-slavery force and just a hop and a skip across the border?I am a bit surprised at the last line. What exactly did the Commonwealth leaders expect would happen after they seceded, that the rest of the US would happily wave them off with hugs and best wishes?

I'm sure London is more well disposed towards the Commonwealth than the OTL Confederacy, but it is still a big jump from that to war. The CSA at least had the "King Cotton" delusion to cling to, I'm not sure what vital leverage the Commonwealth could have beyond being the "not slavery" side. Which is nice obviously, but not a reason to get dragged into a bloody civil war.Always possible, though depends on who is in power in London and whether the mills of Lancashire are getting enough cotton. Would probably be a little quixotic to bank on it without any sort of commitment from the British.
