It seems to me that one of the earliest dlc will be adding options for democratic federations. Having a rotation in all honesty seems like an unlikely political situation, though a fun one gameplay wise. I obviously have no idea how achievable it would be to have a voting system such as pops vote for candidates based on views and opinion on that species and probably other factors.
They could call it Res Galactica maybe :p

I really like The Last Federation. It has its flaws and it certainly isn't a 4x, but it has some really interesting mechanics in the way the game reacts to the player trying to win. I feel strongly that the AI should avoid 'gamey' diplomatic reasoning as much as possible, everyone turning on you because you're winning just shatters your immersion.

I dunno if that's true when you're winning militarily; going out an conquering half the continent/planet/galaxy tends to get some diplomatic repercussions, but not when doing, say, a cultural or scientific victory in Civ.

DLC- Sunset invasion : You get the ability to weaponize stars, transform stars into dyson spheres and hunker down, add an event where stars on the map start going dimmer by a strange new race that feeds on light and wants to satiate its hunger. Unlocks new tech branches related to stars and their energy uses, ultimately leading your race to create energy generators that are basically stars in a box.

Grey Goo aka "Von Neumann's Plague" - Play as the end game calamity. Your faction starts as nanobots with little intelligence, but as more are fabricated a more sophisticated AI emerges from the hive mind.

Pros

  1. No economy - nanobots work as the ultimate hive without rest or pay.
  2. Multiple food sources. Biomass makes for such delicious energy, and when every carbon molecule in a planet is processed, radioactive or stellar energy sources can be harnessed.
  3. All planets are equal. While the lifespan of nanobots can be short, as long as they can replicate faster any planetary object can eventually be converted to Goo.
Cons
  1. Limited initial AI dramatically reduces research speed.
  2. Simple AIs will somehow need to research something like Spontaneous Thought before being able to open new branches of research or engage in diplomacy.
  3. If enough of the goo is destroyed or prevented from accessing the hive, cognitive abilities will be dramatically reduced.
  4. Replication errors may spontaneously appear, resulting in unexpected events. With civic options to permit the threshold of change.

Bioform - Opens possibilities to play races that depend on their biological evolution for galactic conquest. There are no technology but genetic selection, morphing and sheer obnoxious ways of evolving your species.

Think aliens, zerg, tyranids, instectoid's from starship troopers..

Stern messages could get out of hand...

I just hope the A.I. isn't like most ofther 4x games and keeps spamming you with vague threats and insults. I have a rule in all of my 4x games. When someone issues a threat to me, I attack them.

When I issue a threat to someone else, and he refuses to do as I say, I attack them.

If someone insults me, I attack them.

So far, no game has successfully allowed the A.I. to learn that insulting the most aggressive power in the galaxy/world is a bad idea.

There should also be a DLC that allows royal marriage between species, which would increase relations but lower the fertility of the married couple by 100%, should still have the possibility to produce an offspring if there is someone with the seductive focus.

Also, castration. I want court eunuchs.

pretty much this

i always hated when i am playing like civ 5 is strongest in game have nukes and shit and then Pedro II is like "ah my favourite city state" as he is stuck in industrial age

DLC "The Senate" : Adds depth to the diplomacy, administration and peaceful gameplay.
- Creates a senate for each empire (think of CK2's council) which helps ruler to govern the empire. For autocracies this senate might limit their power, for oligarchies it may represent the rest of the oligarchy and for democracies it would be something like the U.S's congress. Loyal senate would give different bonuses, while disloyal might prevent ruler's increase in power and/or plot a revolution.
- Federations aren't just bigger alliances with benefits, but something more like HRE, with different reforms, rules and laws which appeal to every member of the federations. Also, it would possible to increase the president's power or even annex every member of the federation under one rule.

In Stellaris there's actually a 'talk back' weight, so if you insult an AI they're more likely to insult you back.
So can you further insult them until one of you just says: "That's it, you insulted me too much, now prepare for war"?
And then a war declaration follows.
