This is only my second AAR. My first was a HOI one, which was as ill, conceived as Michael Jackson’s facelift. Anyway I would appreciate some feedback on this. Good or bad

Cheers:cool:

The Legacy of Rome

Part I: The Revival of Byzantium

Manual II stood at his palace window overlooking his city, the city of Constantinople, Greatest Metropolis of Eastern Europe. It Double walls so far impenetrable to enemy forces, its marvellous architecture and buildings. Its merchant navy's sailing in and out of the Harbour. Its many refined people traded in the markets, sang and danced and enjoyed life and all seemed good in Constantinople. Manual walked across his great hall and peered out the opposite window, and there, taunting him from the other side of the Water passage was the Hated Turks. There they ever patrolled the shorelines, always leering and taunting his great city. He hated them. He wanted to raise his fist and smite them, every last one. Much in the same way as they had smote his own realm.

How had it come to this? He wondered with amazement. How had the Mighty Byzantine Empire, Policeman of Europe that had survived longer than Rome itself! , Fallen to these... these savages?? Anger and Revenge burned in his heart. All that was left of his empire was Morea on the tip of Greece, and his city of Constantinople. But had the Turks risen from only humble beginnings aswell he suddenly thought. Had they not been in this very same situation long ago? Yet they have prevailed. Now a grand scheme was surging through Manual. His people where Loyal until the death to their king. They would follow him to whatever end would they not.

Manual the Second, decided then And there that he would restore the Legacy of Rome, whatever the Cost. Manual II was destined to go down as one of the greatest Kings of Europe in History.

He smiled and said to himself... "Someday"....

Man, that paints quite a lurid picture.

Your prologue is quite effective. It sets up the story by leaving the reader wondering what will happen next. For feedback, I would pay attention to capitalization -- especially when you begin a new sentence. And the word you are looking for is 'smote', not 'smoted'. :)

Keep it coming.

This looks like a very interesting AAR indeed, Byzantium is a great nation to compose AAR's on.

Just one question, are we going to see an update soon?;)

Yes I am back! Sorry I havened updated. I’ve been away for a week. But i am back now!!

Heres the next instalment.

"Its outrages!!"

"Nonsense!"

"The King has gone mad I tell you!"

"I never really did trust him"

These where the sorts of things being shouted around The City of Constantinople after King Manuel had posted his latest law and Decree all about the City.

By Order Of His Supreme Majesty Manuel the Second, New laws shall be enforced as of Next Tuesday. Firstly and foremost, The King has raised taxes and prices of goods shall increase 50%. Wages shall be minimized for the next 6 months and if the king desires it, wages will go unpaid. His Majesty has also introduced a Conscription law. All able men over the age of 18 Must Sign up for the Army by Tuesday. If Thou refuses you shalt be put to the Axe. A Curfew has been put into place, any man, women or child seen on the streets after sunset will be arrested. His majesty feels that these laws need to be put in place to Protect Our fair city and to help it prosper

This was not very Popular with the people of the city. Story's of the king’s sanity and mental health began to travel about faster than you could say "Mutiny".

Manuel Of Course Knew This. It had long been an Error of his Designs. Constantinople was Weak; the Whole of Europe now knew that. If it was to survive, Manuel would have to push it to the most absolute limits, and even further if he had to. The Rest of The Population did not however share his views and the King knew he had a growing rebellion on his hands. But this would all pass. If his plans went correctly.

5 Months passed. It was now may the Twenty ninth. Byzantium was Bankrupting. Its people where unemployed, scavenging in the streets, looking for scraps on which to survive. Thieves where common, as was Murder. Yet out of The Dregs of This Society, Manuel had pulled together an enormous army. He had emptied the entire city of its coffers in order to buy the service of Mercenary Company's from around Europe. A Good 2000 gold pieces had already been traded away. Everyday for the past month, boats had been sailing into the city, delivering Mercenaries, and hundreds more where on the way. This mercenary’s where perhaps the only reason the city had not already revolted.

December came around and Constantinople was overflowing with Mercenary’s. A good Eighty Thousand men where camped in or around the city, a force to be reckoned with. But at a terrible cost. His people where dying on the streets. They where Furious with Manuel and would gladly murder him many times over. But Manuel had a plan. If he could focus their Anger against one thing, they could become brilliant allies. He decided it was time to rally his people against a common enemy... the Turks

A public speech was a risky stunt for the King. Being hated throughout the city, he was prone to assassination, but there he was.

"Fellow Romans!" Shouted Manuel from his pedestal in the Marketplace. "Friends" He said with a grin. "The past few months have perhaps been the Darkest in our nations history. Never before has Constantinople been in such Shambles. Yes indeed I have created this. But I ask you, who is really responsible?"

Muffled curses echoed around the crowed. The obvious answer was "The King"

"What has Driven The Great Byzantine Empire into the ashes in which we now stand"

"Barbarians" some muttered

"Yes!!! The Barbarians, but not Just Barbarians, The Turks! They have pillaged our land, killed our families, destroyed our homes and now they have the NERVE to taunt at our city."

Enthusiastic cries of agreement began to sound about the square. Manuel Smiled to himself. Everything was Going To plan.

"Will we let them steal and take what is rightfully ours?" Cried Manuel

"NO"

"Will we Sit by and Surrender?” he cried again while raising his fist

"Never"

"And that we will never do. Rally to My Cause, to Our Cause, to The Legacy of Rome and Constantinople Will Shine brighter than ever before. We Will Be Victorious!!! We will triumph over Evil!!! Our Glory, will be Restored!!!!"

A Tremendous cheer arose from around the Square and streets. Many had gathered to hear his speech.

"Yes" he said to himself with a smile "Our Glory will be restored...."

June 15th 1420.

The Byzantine Army Was Ready. 80000 Soldiers and 20000 Cavalry strong. A Large number had been forced to camp upon the fields, as there simply was not enough room in the City. They No longer where camping upon the fields however, for their services where now needed.

Thirteen days Ago an Emissary from the Ottomans rode into Constantinople (Stoned on the way through). He Had Been granted an Audience with Manuel.

His terms where simple. "Take this Rabble army back where it belongs. The Great Sultan sees it as a threat and a gesture of War. The Sultan wishes you disband this army immediately, else suffer the Consequences. Manuals Response was Explosive. The Young Turk did not know what had hit him. "DO NOT TRY AND INTIMIDATE THE POWER OF ROME!" Shouted Manuel as he jumped up from his Throne. He half ran up to the emissary in anger, his robes flying after him. "Long have I waited for this day, the day when your Filthy Sultan will bow down at my feet, at the feet of my People.” He said while gripping the front of the Mans shirt. "If you survive the stoning you will receive on your way out, I want you to do this. Tell your Sultan that The Byzantines are Ready for war!"

The Emissary, shocked and shaken, pushed away from Manuel and quickly hurried out.

That was Thirteen Days ago, and now the Day of Judgement was upon Constantinople. The Turks had gathered an Army of 40000 men and cavally in Rumelia. They had appeared to be doing nothing and so in his rashness, Manuel ordered a force of 20000 to besiege the unoccupied Macedonia, a decision he now rued greatly. Over the Sea of Marmora the Turks had been occupied with Abstemious. Manuel had hoped that the Turkish army in that area would be too late to join the battle. But it was not so. Winter had subsided unnaturally quickly in Abstemious and the City had fallen. Now Manuel would have to prepare shore defences against the 20000 Turks across the sea. His Force in Macedonia, commanded by General Diogenes was returning to Constantinople with great speed, but would only arrive long after the battle had begun. The Turks where also much more efficient in Battle Then Manuals soldiers, and 60000 could easily overwhelm 100000

This Battle was to be a turning point in world history. If Manuals army was Victorious, the Turks would fall and Byzantium would be restored. If He Lost, The Turkish victory would be so complete that the Smouldering embers of Rome would be extinguished at last and forever.

Now Manuel Sat upon his horse in His Glittering Royal Armour. Behind him was his Army, All in Formation upon the field in front of the City. Spears and swords Glittering in the sunlight, Shields at the ready, and in front of him over the Hill, The Turkish Army could now bee seen marching towards the City.

"Sire"

"Yes Colonel Basilues, what is it?"

"I must insist you leave the Battlefield. You have named no heir and if you Fall..."

"My Place is Here With My People Basilues" Manuel replied Firmly.

"Of... of course sire. Forgive me"

"The Turkish Army was now very visible in their many blocks and arrangements and the sound of their marching filled the areas of all. They had a line of Mameluk camels and horsemen at the front. Behind them were a few lines of infantry and archers, and the mass of the force was all in one gigantic square at the rear and sides, much the same as Manuals formation. His 20000 cavally where in the front line with him. The Turkish Army arrived upon the opposing hill. Between the two hills was a great ditch. The Turkish army Halted. The Battle was about to begin.

In Relation to killerdude's question, I raised an army of 100000 by taking lots of bank loans and recruiting mercenary companies. Now please take your seats ladies and gentlemen and enjoy the battle.

The Trumpets Sounded from both sides, The Byzantine Heralds Rode Forth to meet their Turkish counterparts in the ditch. It was really quite pointless. A long planned and anticipated battle was not going to be called off just like that. As the Heralds fruitlessly tried to arrange a truce, Manuel looked out to the west over the rolling plains in hope of seeing General Diogenes and his men. Alas no, only the open lands for miles around.

Suddenly a faint cry issued from the centre of the field. Some sort of Commotion was apparently taking place. Manuel squinted and saw a single horsemen galloping back up the slope. It Seemed somehow Smaller than a usual horsemen. The Horse rode up past Manuel and the front line and then he saw it. The man had been decapitated severely. Manuel recoiled in disgust. And then it began. From the opposing hill, arrows began to fly. The Battle had begun.

The Turkish Cavally Charged, with many men following their lead or advancing around to the sides of the charge. Manuel drew his sword and yelled, "The Hour of Doom is upon us, now ride, Ride for the Empire!!!!" and with that, the Byzantines charged as well, following Manuals lead. The Two forces rumbled down the slopes, kicking up a dust storm as they went. The bloodthirsty war cries of the Turks could now be heard. Both sides reached the centre and struck. The Clash was spectacular. Arrows and spears Whirled, horses crashed and swords clanged, No mercy was shown by either side.

The Byzantine army had the numbers, and the Turks found themselves being flanked upon the sides of the front line. As Manuel fought, the unthinkable happened. An arrow flew forth from out of nowhere and struck his horse in the Side. The Horse Reared and fell backwards, knocking manual to the side, luckily not crushing him. He immediately clambered up and went to draw his sword, but before he could do so he was hammered hard on the back of his helmet by something hard. He did not stumble however, and he whirled around to come face to face with Murad the Second himself, Sultan of the Turks. Murad reared his horse around and came at Manual with a charge. Manual drew his sword and swung at Murad as he passed, barely scraping the edge of his sword. Murad Turned and charged again, but this time, Manual was ready. The horse was almost upon him. Murad raised his sword but before he could strike, Manual Fell backwards as the horse crashed into him. And thrust his sword upwards in the beast’s heart. It screamed a cry of pain and fell clear over Manual, again not crushing him. Murad climbed out of the mess and drew his scimitar. He ran at Manual with a great cry and the two clashed swords and began to fight.

The Battle raged around them as they did. The Turkish where still holding their position, but they could not last for long. For every man that was killed, 3 more would take his place, Numbers where with the Byzantines.

The Two Royals Continued to fight, Swinging Furiously at each other and as their swords clashed, sparks issued forth from them. Manual swung at Murad but as he did, Murad ducked and he fell forward. The Sultan raised his sword above his head and went for the final blow, but Manual kicked and knocked him back. He jumped up; He fought an exhausted Murad backwards, punched him in the face, knocked his sword from his hand and pointed his blade to his neck. Murad froze; Manual simply stared, as if to say "I Am the Victor". Manual was about to strike when He was knocked to the ground for a fourth time by a passing Turk on a horse. Murad quickly clambered onto the back of the horse and then he was gone. Manual Got up and began to Curse. If Only he had not waited, Murad would be dead. He Was Furious with himself. In His anger he went and felled a few nearby Turks who where duelling with Other Byzantines. He had just finished off yet another Turk when a trumpet blew. The Turks where running back up the hill. Thinking that the Turks where defeated, the Byzantine soldiers followed.

During the Time in which Manuel had been Duelling, The Turkish line had been broken and had begun to retreat, However this was Feigned, For the Commanding Turkish General knew that they could win if they had elevation on their side. He made a wall of spears with Troops in the back lines. The Byzantines would there be defeated. Fear Struck Manuals heart. His soldiers would be slaughtered on the slopes by fresh Turkish troops. They would run straight into a wall of spears and what was worse, the Turks had the advantage of Elevation. He recalled that something Similar had happened at the Battle of Hastings in England, almost 400 years ago.

Colonel Basilues Rode Past and Manual cried out to him "Basilues! Tell The Men and the other Commanders Not to run up the hill! Bring them back out of the slope onto our own side of the ditch. There we may wear them down with our Longbow men"
"Yes Sir" Cried Basilues as he rode of on his errand. The Troops began to heed these Commands and withdrew to the other side of the ditch. Manual Had Been sent a new Horse and had ridden back to the top of the Hill. The Air was thick with Arrows and he had to keep a shield up in case one flew at him.

Manual Was Quite pleased with himself. He thought he had saved the day, Saved Constantinople. He looked around to the city for a moment and something caught his eye. Boats! Their where boats in the Straight! Some were still sailing to the shore while others where already unloading their troops upon the shore near the city. Horns blew in the City and men turned to see what was happening, and dismay overtook them. Manual ordered men off to the city to fight at its gates. About 20000 detached to battle the 20000 that would land, leaving 40000 behind. The Turks had about 30000 troops left, and seeing that their reinforcements had arrived, they charged up the hill after the fleeing Byzantines. Manual ordered a wall of spears but he knew that it might not hold.

He was in dismay. His troops where confused and panicking, he now had 2 flanks to fight upon and it was now his 60000 against 50000. Victory was being snatched from his hand as he reached out to grab it. He looked around west in despair, and then he saw them. General Diogenes and his forces. They where already charging towards the Turks in the ditch. The Turks had not noticed them until it was to late and Diogenes was able to crash into them without so much as a sword clang from the Turks. Hope now filled the men. The Turks turned from the hill to fight Diogenes and now Manual ordered his forces to charge back down on the Turks while his archers fired upon them.

The Rest is noted quickly. The Turks at the walls of Byzantium where caught between Manuals forces and the archers on the walls. They either fled back into their boats and where sunk or went to drown in the river. The Turks in The Gully where simply overcome by the two forces and the few that survived fled far over the hills and across to Maybe Bulgaria or Rumelia. The Battle had cost much. 50000 Byzantines and 75000 Turks where dead. The Gully was transformed into a lake of blood. Manual never again saw Col Basilues or many others that he knew quite well. But the victory meant much. The Roman Empire was saved! And it could now take the fight to the Turks.

I see you changed from Marilyn Manson's children to Michael Jackson's facelift.:) But LD's comment applies just as well in either case.

That was quite a battle! What a slugfest! Now you need to clean up the mess and press on for victory. Good luck!

Very nice job against the Ottomans. A somewhat different strategy than I usually use, but it worked well.

Playing and writing on Byzantium myself right now, I'd like to know what your inflation level is after hiring all those mercenaries. Also, what patch and settings are you using?

It Was July the 22nd 1425 as Manual walked through the Gardens of The Now Shining Constantinople. Since The Battle Of Thrace over 4 years Ago, The Turks Where put Constantly on The Defensive. The Decimated Turkish Army was In No Condition to go on the Offensive, rather retreat to their fortresses and try to wait out Sieges. The Areas North Of Constantinople all but fell in mid 1923. The Byzantine Army then turned their Attention south to Asia Minor, where the Turks had Rebuild A Modest army to fight with. Smyrna had fallen, but The Ottomans Still held Anatolia, Abstemious, Angora and Morea, which they had captured 2 years ago.

It was a Beautiful Sunny day in Constantinople. All the Plunder from The Turkish Cities in the North was carried back to Constantinople, Filling the city with jewels, wealth and Beauty. It Was Once Again The Shining Metropolis it used to be. His people who now lived in Luxury praised manual throughout the City. For all this, One Would Assume That The King would Be Overwhelmed with glee, But it was Not so. The King Was Almost 60 years off Age and he was beginning to feel it. He Had Named No heir, and if he did not do so before death dealt its blow, petty power struggles would tear apart all that he had accomplished in the past five years. After the Turks where defeated, the Future of Byzantium looked more uncertain then ever. How would the Rest of the Muslim world react? Would Manuals Armis be able to keep the Muslims in line? What will the Reaction of The Christian Countries of Europe be? Will Byzantium Fall back into bankruptcy once the plunder stops coming in? All these Questions Haunted Manual.

In Two Days he was Due to Sail over the Straight over Marmara and join up with the Army in Smyrna. There they would ride to Anatolia and Battle the Turkish army and Put The City of Bursa Under Siege. Manual feared he would be killed there, and he decided he MUST name an Heir Before he left. He Had Two Choices. One Was a Distant Relative in which the same blood ran Named Konstantinos. He Had Commanded Many Sieges against the Ottomans in This war and was The Ideal Choice. The Other Was a more Shady Character named Ioannes. Ioannes was also a distant blood relative of Manuals. He Was a Very Ambitions man who knew what he wanted, and was worthy of the title of King. Manuel could Not Decide. His head was Aching and he needed his rest. He still had a day to choose. Nothing to worry about yet he thought.

How Very Wrong he was
