DECEMBER 1944
After five years of struggle throughout Europe, North Africa and Russia, the Allied Armies have managed to push the Axis forces, until almost the borders of the prewar period
-Strategic Situation
By December of 1944, the strategic situation for Germany is desperate..As the year opened, Axis cities burned under the bombs of British and Allied airmen. The second half of the year was catastrophic: On the Eastern Front, Soviet offensives obliterated the once-mighty Army Group Center an cost the Axis nearly three qurters of million men, while in the West, the Allied swept from Normandy nearly to the pre-war border within six months.
The loss of the vital Ploiesti (Romania) oilfields forced the Axis to rely on a trckle of synthetic fuels, strangling efforts at the front and cutting into war production.Neither could Germany expect help from its fellow Axis members: Mussolini had been deposed the year before and was clinging to control of a puppet state in North Italy, while the Japanese had almost been pushed back to the Home Islands and were fightinh for survival. The question is: Does the Third Reich will perish or will be reborn from the ashes like a phoenix and will win?
