Dogs of War....
Horde Council – Lorraine
All eyes were on the King of Lorraine, who seemed almost….paralyzed by the news. Since her first bold attack on the Low Countries of Spain, Lorraine had enjoyed success on the battlefield that made us the envy of Europe. Few nations, regardless of their size or position on the World Stage could match the Men of Lorraine for their boldness and tenacity in battle.
This then, represented the end of an era.
And a shocking, horrid end it was.
So all eyes turned to the bold Warrior King of Lorraine to see how we would meet this new time of darkness.
For several moments, he lowered his eyes to the table, thinking deeply…carefully.
Then he raised them and looked not at me, but at his son.
“Charles…today you have demonstrated that you are indeed worthy of the Throne when I am gone, so I ask you…if you were King…if you were King right now, what would you do?
Charles took his father’s hand and held it in a gesture of reassurance. “F…father….I am a simple boy…I…”
“You are not a simpleton!” Antoine shouted loud enough to make his son flinch (but I took note of the fact that he did not remove his hand from his father’s, which I thought said a great many important thing about the character of our fine Prince). “You are my son and the one-day King of Lorraine! You must begin to act the part! Now help me….tell me what you would do, if you held the reigns of power right now.”
Charles seemed to almost shudder with effort as he turned his mind on the problems at hand, and I watched him closely, curious to know what his mind was on the subject. As difficult as I knew it was, I found myself agreeing with Antoine’s course of action here so far. It was a fine, if not terrifying test for the boy.
The Lords of the Horde watched with equal interest, I noted, and all was silent as we waited.
Finally, the manling Prince spoke.
“We should…buy peace with France….t…to make them think that w….we are having….problems with our allies….and let the Horde….fight the French if they are….willing and….able to do it alone.”
No one spoke yet….all waited to hear what else, if anything.
“S….someone must ride to t…the Low Countries….to find out about this….rebel leader and w…what he wants.”
The Prince contemplated for a moment. “And we m….must send troops….back to Saxony.”
The Lord of Hessen, the largest and strongest of our Vassal-States stepped up to the Prince and regarded him for a long moment.
No one so much as breathed, although my hand did stray to my dagger just in case. There was simply no telling what would happen next.
The Lord of Hessen dropped to one knee and lowered his eyes. “My forces are at your disposal, My Prince. It is a good plan to make the French believe we are divided, and I for one, will carry the fight to them to relieve your forces currently in Paris so that you may defend your homeland.”
“And I.” Said the Lord of Hanover as he joined his cousin, kneeling before the Prince.
The Lord of the Palintinat followed. As did the Lord of Cleves.
“And there you have it.” The King proclaimed. “Our plan then, will be precisely as outlined by my son. Buy peace at any price with the French, move our army out of Paris and link it with the survivors of the Flandres massacre. I will personally lead this army to Flandres to put down the rebellion and meet with the rebel leader there to discern what he wants. In the east, we will wrap up our sieges of Baden and Thurigen, then consolidate our forces to deal with Saxony, while guarding against incursions from Bavaria and Bohemia, in order to prevent them from rescuing their beleaguered allies.”
Nods of agreement from everyone present, and once more, I felt as though my heart would burst out of my chest in sheer pride for Prince Charles.

A peace is signed with the French, and we pay 200d in war damages to them. The Battle Group that had been assailing Paris marches for Artois, where the remnants of the Flandres disaster are waiting. Antoine departs for the province as well.
July 3rd, 1542
A fresh Battle Group arrives in Bavaria and deals a severe blow to the 18k army guarding the Bavarian capitol, sending them fleeing. Our forces camp outside and lay in a siege, daring the Bavarians/Bohemians to do something about it. Meanwhile, sieges continue in Thurigen and Baden (-3, -1 respectively), and our remaining two Battle Groups begin marching on Saxony, intent on overrunning the tiny nation. Our report is that the Saxons are holding their position in anticipation of another invasion, and that heavy recruitment is occurring all through Bohemia, though the Bohemians have no sizable army at present.
August 6th, 1542
The rebellion in Flandres is put down, and the King requests an audience with the rebel leader, who as yet, has no name. No reply is immediately forthcoming, so the King elects to remain with his forces in our biggest and most prized city to keep the peace there.
August 20th, 1542
Defense works collapse at Baden. Walls breeched in Thurigen, and so a general assault commences.
August 30th, 1542
Thurigen’s defenders surrender. Our King orders that the rulers of both realms be brought to him in Flandres. They are captured, and driven to that fair city in chains to be presented to the King of Lorraine.
October 1st, 1542
Still no word from the rebel leader, but now the province of Zeeland is in open rebellion, with some 18,000 rebels storming our defense works there. The King vows to crush this latest uprising just as soon as he deals with the upstarts of our two, tiny captured kingdoms.

Antoine sneered as the two dirty, hungry, frightened Germanic Elecktors were half dragged into the throne room. “Ahhh…the upstarts arrive at last.” He said darkly.
“My Lord, King of Lorraine, the former ruler of Baden said from his knees. “Show mercy….spare our lives and make a peace with us.”
“Oh yes…there will be peace, and you both shall live.” He said definitively.
Looks of relief crossed the faces of both Elecktors.
“But your lands are forfeit to Lorraine. You will live out your days in your country estates, and if you play even a tiny amount of politics, or hire more personal guards than are needed to man your estates, I will hunt you down and hang your heads from the walls of fair Flandres….understood?”
Both men nodded.
“So be it. Send word to your people that they are your people no longer.”

Lorraine militarily annexes both Baden and Thurigen, growing her empire larger, but also incurring the wrath of Austria! The day that the proclamation is made, the Austrians declare war on Lorraine! Two days following that, the Hanseatic League also issues a formal declaration of war! The members of the Horde alliance immediately ask if they can be of assistance, and in light of the rapidly disintegrating situation, I ask their help on behalf of the King. As a single voice, they accept, and rapidly begin drawing up peace proposals of their own with the French, to free up their forces to deal with these latest threats.
Antoine releases his forces to deal with the Zeeland rebellion, and rides for Lorraine once more.

In light of the grim news in response to our latest territorial acquisition, I borrow 400d from the Order and begin raising troops (all infantry) in Lorraine, Artois, Lux, and Alsace. Somehow, my gut tells me that the troops currently being raised will not be sufficient for all the trouble that lies ahead.
In that, at least, I would be correct.
