In the land of gods: A Nippon AAR

Hello everybody! This is my first AAR, also my first time actually playing with an East-Asian country, so I don't expect to do all that well. My goal is basically to have some impact on the world, and to write a decent AAR. Also forgive my Canuckian spelling ;)

I'm playing with EU2 1.08 and one of the older post CK beta's. Also AGCEEP, most recent version.

Prologue: Visions of an Ancient Battle
Mon_Minamoto.jpg
Mon_Taira.jpg

The Minamoto and Taira mon respectively.

December 31, 1418. The Island of Honshu, Japan.

He stood watching the Shimonosaki shoreline. The night was dark and in the distance he could see the clouds gathering, as Hachiman prepared to unleash a reign of destruction across the lands. On the horizon small fires were burning. This was a most curious phenomenon as there was no land for miles across the straight, on such a cloudy night as this there was no way Shikoku or the smaller islands should be visible. Slightly disturbed the great man turned to look at his rear.

Towering above him was a monument to the spirits of the once great Taira. The temple, he knew, had been placed there to placate the restless spirits of a people who had died so horribly. As the flames grew brighter to his rear He found his mind wandering. Suddenly he was nothing but a spectre in the midst of a great battle, as wooden ships closed on each other, the warriors put down their bows and picked up their swords. Now, with the fire almost enveloping him, He watched as several of the lead ships converged on one of their smaller enemies, from that smaller craft, He watched as a woman and child jumped into the freezing water. A great cheer rose up, as the smaller fleet followed suit. There was not a single survivor.

As the fire receded around him, He heard a faint voice whisper; “Take heed, our fate awaits you. Your line will not rule much longer.”
As the temple slowly came back into view He realized that he had just seen the Battle of Dan-no-Ura, where the Taira were all but annihilated, and the Minamoto had taken power. He looked at the temple once more, then back to the sea where he saw the fires receding. Disturbed and annoyed, Ashikaga Yoshimochi, descendant of the Minamoto, Seii Taishogun, and De facto ruler of all Japan, turned back and rejoined his men as the sun began to rise over the horizon.

Thank you. I'm not entirely sure why I used that battle, other then the legends surrounding the site. It worked. Now to start the actual game :D

Yes, good start indeed. Hope you can weather the revolts well, I suggest you grab some land on the mainland ASAP. We need more Asian AARs!
Thanks, like I said, I've never played through before as an Asian country. I do know Japanese history in this era better then I know any other countries (in any era), so I know what is coming, but I'm not sure how the game simulates it. I was thinking of taking out Korea and getting China on my side as soon as I can, but I noticed when I tested a few years that I have 0 diplomacy to start, so I also need to work on that.

Chapter 1: Signs of Weakness

January 1, 1419
Abe Heita moved swiftly through the palace grounds, his bodyguards surrounding him. He flew through the all too familiar corridors, twisting this way, and that, yet another security measure against any unwanted guests. As Heita reached the final hallway he was stopped by a silent guard, sitting in his path. The guard motioned for him to wait as he went inside to tell his lord that his guest had finally arrived. Within a few minutes the door was slid open and this time Heita was motioned inside, where he quickly found his place, and bowed his head to the ground.
As he raised his head, Heita noticed a troubling look on his masters face. His master was doing his best to conceal it, but was failing, and he knew it.
“Abe” called the Shogun, “We have much that needs to be done today.”
“Yes, my lord” was all that Heita could answer.
“The winds are changing, we must prepare ourselves for whatever may come”
“My lord?”
“My spies in among the great clans tell me that all is not well within the land. They tell me of discontent that none of my other trusted servants have been willing to tell me
"The Traitors should all be hung my lord”
“Do you think that is what is necessary?”
This question shocked Heita, not because it was completely unexpected, but because of the way it had been asked. It was almost as though the Shogun valued his answer. Sure, he had been this close to the Shogun before, and had even talked with him. But never had the Shogun asked him his advice. Heita could tell that the Shogun knew what he was thinking.
“Come now Abe, I value the opinions of all those who serve under me”
“My lord, the Daimyo have been making noise ever since your ancestors first took the title Shogun. The Hojo even managed to control the Minamoto Shogunate. The only way to live with them is to make sure they know who has the real power”
“An interesting suggestion, however I have something I would like to try first. I want to focus our efforts on three areas. First, I want the Empire more stable then it has ever been. The only way we can beat the Daimyo is if we can keep them from acting together, keep them from having anything to demand, except power.
“Secondly, I want our trade improved. Trade is the most important thing. Without trade we will not have any money. Without money, we can not fund our operations to keep the Daimyo from gaining the power they so desire.
“The third thing we need is an alliance with the Chinese.”
Heita was having trouble thinking, his mind racing. “My lord, the Chinese have believed us to be their vassals for hundreds of years, we would never be able to join with them on an equal footing.”
“Abe” Said the Shogun “You know as well as I do that the dream of the Shoguns, one that I share in equally, has always been to take control of the Dragon Thrown, and declare a new Mandate from Heaven. This dream can not be reached in my life time, I must strive to keep what I already have to pass on to my own son.”
Hearing the worry in the older mans voice, Heita knew it was time for him to leave. He would do his part in setting about the Shoguns plans, though he was unsure if the Shogun was still mentally stable. Something must have happened at that lake the other night, but what could cause a change such as this?

Sorry for another non-Game AAR post, I just wanted to us this one to tell my Strategy (insofar as I can have one at this point), Next one will be gameplay and I'll even post a map (even if it looks like Japan from the start ;))

Oh aye, don't apologize, 'cause you've just got me hooked on this one!

How far have you actually played in the game?

I have played as far as March 18 1423 (Which will also be considered the end of chapter one). Probably three more parts out of that. Probably write some more this afternoon. Need to look a few things up which may be very obscure for the part after that.

edit: Good to hear I have people hooked :)

Are you saying you will close this on me because Josh followed my instructions to say "moo" here (Which I never intended for him to do)? I've heard worse threats. :D

Anyway, just searching for one piece of information before I can start an update.

Couldn't find the Info so I will give it to you anyway, and put a certain forum member in place of the historic name :)

September 2, 1420

Yoshimochi stood gripping the handle of his wooden sword in his right hand, watching his opponent carefully. Then he struck. Stepping forwards in one fluid motion, he brought the sword down. SNAP. Blocked, Yoshimochi quickly did a 360 degree turn, once more taking aim for his opponent and
SNAP
. Wood on Wood again. Bringing the sword up and around, he prepared for another strike, and succeeded. His opponent was beaten.
The two men bowed to each other and parted ways. Yoshimochi and a few of his Hatamoto headed back to his chambers where they were to meet a senior member of the Shimatzu family.

On the way he thought to himself how great his plans had been going. With the help of Abe, now one of Yoshimochi’s most senior advisors, Japans diplomacy had been increased to levels not seen in years, they had even managed to send diplomats overseas. Yoshimochi’s third daughter, Mayuko, had been wed to the 2nd son of the Chinese Emperor, a usual first step in cementing an alliance of equals. Militarily, the nation was ready for anything. The Shogun had split the army and sent one half to Kyushu, while leaving the other half in the Kanto. Income had also been increased with the emphasis on trade, the Shogun had also had permanent Tax collection agencies set up in Kyushu and the Kanto, two of the richest areas in his realm.

Unfortunately not all was well in the world. Pirates had been spotted in the Bay of Korea. Obviously this had something to do with the bitter rivalry between China and Korea, ironic allies. He did not like it at all. If they could send pirates into the Bay of Korea they could send them to waters much closer, and more important, to Japan. Yoshimochi did not want to think about that.

Yoshimochi entered his meeting room now, still deep in thought, his movements automatic as his thoughts turned to Togashi Mitsushige, an assassin he had used against his eldest brother. Togashi was unfortunately someone he couldn’t keep around, so Yoshimochi had to have him killed as well. The Daimyo had heard about it and appeared quite upset; Yoshimochi was still trying to smooth things over with them, Though he believed that they only made an issue of it for the purposes of posturing against him. Finally, and not completely unrelated, had been the Ikki, peasant groups refusing to do any work. Yoshimochi believed that the Daimyo had their hand in this as well. He had been forced to subsidize with food from the Shogunate’s stockpiles at a heavy blow to his treasury. If he could he would make those halfwit Daimyo pay dearly.

Yoshimochi was suddenly brought from his thoughts by the young officer who had been standing guard outside the door.
“My lord, Abe has come, he says he has an urgent message for you”
“Alright” replied the Shogun “Let him in.”
The guard left and was quickly replaced by Heita who bowed his head to the tatami before looking up at his lord for permission to continue with his message. Yoshimochi nodded.
“My lord, I have just received word, Iyo, on the Island of Shikoku has revolted under the banner of Lord Tomatocow Osahiko!”
“BAKA NA!” Yoshimochi shouted, forgetting all about the others around him. Quickly remembering his place he looked back at Abe.
“Bring him to me alive. If you can not do that, then bring me his head as a trophy.”
Yoshimochi realized that the prophesy of the Taira spirits had begun to unfold.
