Roman Empire vs. Zombies, I'm sure Hollywood will make a film about that sooner or later. I think the Zombies would lose; after all, the glory of Rome is everlasting!
...or, if they're really wanting to hit the top of the charts, they could opt for the ultimate blockbuster: Zombie Roman Empire! (ZRE for friends)

With the coming of patch 2.0 I face a dilemma. Do I play through as fast I can, or do I make a backup and hope that 2.0 doesn't wreck my save. Also, since we are coming up on the 1200 I'm gonna ask my readers if you want me to enable Sunset Invasion, just for the lulz

I say with the zombies, the Aztecs invading would be a bit too much to narrate and for the health of the map. That's just my two cents though.
Just to clarify, the zombie thing i added was "a nightmare" that Sophia had, i'm not adding the zombie mod ;D

Doesn't that not work though? The one time I tried using it the game proceeded to update anyhow. What I did what just not launch Steam at all, and play the game from the launcher in the folder.

Oh, and my vote is not to enable Sunset Invasion, and as interesting as it might be, no Zombies either.

EDIT: According to the 2.0 Change log, older save games should be compatible.

Chapter II: The Road to Rome

At the opening of 1164 the Empire was at a crossroads. With the East mostly pacified, many in the Empire sought an end to the near constant warfare that had marked the previous eighty years. Although nearly all of those wars had ended in victory, the cost in men and material had still been enormous. The vast new lands needed to be populated, and more importantly administered, creating a massive drain on the intellectual resources of the central Empire. Peace being attained at last, many of the Doux now called for a halt to any further campaigns until the new territories had been fully integrated into the Imperial fold. Sophia recognized this feeling, and decided to put off any immediate plans for an assault on Rome. Since the Bishop of Rome, called Pope by the Latin’s, in theory commanded the loyalty of all the Catholic states, a war against him could draw in the entire West against her. Despite her husband’s position as Kaiser in Germany, Sophia felt sure that he would be forced by his vassals to defend the Pope in the event of an attack on Rome. The Empire’s must be ready for full scale war before they marched on Rome, and such a mustering would take many years.

Here follows the account of Empress Sophia’s aide, the eunuch Micah, on her triumphant return to Constantinople.

The Empress returned to the City at the head of her Legion, and the populace gave them a hero’s welcome. These men had marched into the heart of the heathen lands and ripped it out, definitively restoring the Empire’s power and prestige. Treasure and slaves had flowed back to Greece from the conquered lands, greatly enriching the nobles, and the new lands required colonists, giving the crowded masses a chance at a new life. I saw the look of surprise on my lady’s face when she saw the gold and black banner of the German Empire hanging from the palace gates, indicating that her husband was in residence. She had not seen Konrad for several years, since he had left to rule the distant Germans. As the procession grew nearer to the place gates, a feeling of anxiety began to grow in her mind. Did he still love her, or had he been seduced by some northern whore with pale hair and snowy skin. Her own skin, which had been pale in her youth, was brown from her many months on campaign, and her hair was in desperate need of cutting. She quickly tried to straighten her hair and steel her nerves. As her litter passed through the gates, a great cheer went up from the assembled nobility. They lined the great courtyard, leaving a clear path for her to walk to the stairs of the great palace. At the top of the stairs stood her throne, and on the step below that stood her husband. Her knees almost gave way at the sight of him, but somehow she kept walking forward. He had aged greatly since their last meeting, the stress of his position obviously weighing heavily on him. However, the same quiet confidence she had fallen in love with still emanated from his dark eyes. He smiled as she mounted the steps, and went to his knees as she drew level to him and stood before her throne. I watched as she turned, holding the scepter of her office in on hand and the sword of her father in the other. She looked like and avenging angel come down to smite the infidel, but of course that is what she had done. For the first time in our memory, our eastern frontier was secure, and it was all thanks to our beloved Empress…

mdaVsYf.jpg

Her joy at seeing her husband was evident, as nine months later her third son Konstatios was born.

Despite the halting of any foreign expansion during the next five years, the Imperial Army was not idle. The conquered territories had always had rebels and malcontents festering in the hills and forests, and now the Army was sent to root them out all across the Empire. From Judea to Africa and in far off Alania the army fought against the domestic enemies of Rome, keeping its skills sharp and the Empire prosperous. Sophia also sought to consolidate her control over the Kingdom of Alania, defeating a rebellion of the Greek upstart Dermokaites and placing the old Alan Halani dynasty back on the throne as Despots. Some saw her favoring an Alan over a Greek as an act of betrayal, but Sophia did not like her vassals seizing land for their fellow citizens, especially since her grandfather John II had promised the Halani clan continued rule of the kingdom as a condition for vassalage. After crushing the forces of the usurper, Sophia stripped him of the title of Despot and sent him back to Wallachia, penniless and humiliated.

Rebels to be crushed.

nRsUBxa.jpg

Fools to be humbled.

Italy at this time was divided by two great powers and several smaller states. In the north, the German Empire maintained a tight grip on the Italian city states, save for the coastal republics of Venice and Genoa. To the south, the Greeks had become the majority, save for Apulia where the Normans still ruled under the Empress. Finally Sicily remained divided between the Greeks at Syracuse, Italians at Palermo and the Moslems at Messina. Finally, the area immediately around Rome was controlled by the Papacy, which held the ancient city in a perpetual state of squalor and ruin. All of the vast monies gathered by the Catholic Church flowed not to the glory and betterment of the city, but straight into the pockets of the Papacy. The city had to be reclaimed if the Empire wanted to reclaim its place as the undisputed center of Christendom.

WNNeGiS.jpg

As 1170 dawned, the Empire was ready to take the first step on the road to Rome.

Standing between Rome and the Empire was the ancient city of Capua, ruled by the Genoese republic. The money grubbing Italians had refused to assist the Greeks of Syracuse against their Moselm enemies, seeking to preserve the profits from trading with the heathens. They could muster almost ten thousand men to fight for them, although most were merely mercenaries. The Empire had to take the city in order to march overland to Rome, and seeing as the Genoese navy was based in the harbor a seaborne attack would be far too risky. During January and into March, hundreds of soldiers were brought to Amalfi in secret, consisting mainly of local levies. Finally, the Varagnian Guard arrived from The City, and the Emperors Legion followed soon after. Eleven thousand strong, the Norsemen and Legionaries marched north towards Capua, joined by the local levies of the Norman and Greek lords. Finding no sign of the Italian army, the Legion marched into the city without a fight and laid siege to the citadel. The generals retired to Amalfi, thinking the battle already won. Unknown to them, the full might of Genoa had been assembled in Rome, and now marched on Capua. The Legion was caught off guard, but once again God smiled on the Empire’s forces, for the Genoese were slow to attack and the Legion was able to form up for battle.

All through the day and into the night the two armies clashed, in the fields and through the streets of Capua the sounds of battle drowned out all others. Finally, the Italian mercenaries decided that the money just wasn’t worth it, and began to withdraw. At that moment, the heavy cataphract’s arrived on the field at last, and immediately the orderly Italian retreat became a rout. The Immortals rode down thousands of the Genoese, crushing any hope they had of reclaiming their lost city. The road to Rome was open at last…

You should totally try to inherit the HRE!

My eldest son is the heir, but Alexios is the young genius, and the chosen Heir in the east. Gregorios and Alexios will inherit one Empire each.
