I'll be playing the Knights, but with a completely new approach =)

It's AGGEEP with standard EU2 map and modifications I made for greater geographical/cultural accuracy. I also activated improved cruzader events and bizantium forever events (if the computer makes them survive).

Chapter 1 - A new path for the order

1419 was a great year for the Knights Hospitallars. Felipe de Portugal was elected the new Grand Master of the order with a crusading platform. There was a huge party in our island and the people was happy. Felipe, however, was very much worried, because the crusading cause seamed all but lost at this point. We were no longer crusading, but rather fighting a desperate defensive war against superior turkish forces. Not only that, but our extremely reduced territory could not provide resources to maintain a large army and the donations from the west were each time smaller, not to mention the kings of the west were no longer sending troops to help our holy cause. The future seamed dark, but things were about to change.

Some weeks after the election a large number of merchant ships arrived in our island, and they carried a man who claimed to be a tunisian priest!!! It was known that North Africa and Egypt had been Christian lands until the arab conquests in the 7th century, but since then the native Copta Orthodox egiptians were greatly persecuted by the arabs and were already a minority in their own country, not to mention that the berber Catholics were considered either dead or forcefully converted by the arabs at this point. Instead the priest talked about an underground resistance in Tunisia, Kabylia and Tripolitania, underground churches and an oppressed people needing rescue. Some were skeptic, but it if resistence had been possible in the Roman Empire, why not in Tunisia? The initial idea of the priest was seeking help to relocate his people (estimated at about 10.000 strong against 90.000 muslims in Tunisia) to a place without persecution, but Felipe had another idea. He called for a crusade to liberate Tunisia!!!

Tunisia was not only seeking liberation, it also had a great geographical position. The great desert would make sure that it wouldn't get surrounded like the Kingdom of Jerusalem was. It had much land to grow cattle and build and economy and it had many states forming a buffer against the Ottomans and Teclem forming a buffer against Morroco. Of the great council of 7, the Portuguese, the Castillian, the French and the Polish voted for the crusade, while the English, the German and the Italian voted against, wishing to fight the turks instead. And so it was set, we were to embark on a great journey to liberate Tunisia!

Yay, create a christian Empire around the Western Mediterranean and convert those muslim infidels!

Are you going to be making custom events like moving your capital to the newly conquered territories and adding cores after they have been converted?

Yes, I adapted a crusader event to allow moving to Tripolitania when I conquer it + 1 free conversion + berber culture =) I added a core in Judea, Samara (Holy land, of course, although I don't know if I will go there any time soon) and Tripolitania, and that's about it. All the rest will be blood and money to pay those conversion priests =)

About adding cores after they are converted, what is it for? Making it easier to reclaim them if they are lost?

Chapter 2 - The Conquest of Tripolitania - 1419-1423

Ok, so let the crusade begin!!! On May 29, 1419 our force of 6000 knights and 6000 swordsman loaded in our 13 gallays and embarked in a journey to conquer our new capital, Tripolitania! The journey occurred without major incidents, except that upon arriving at our target our scout ship saw a huge
tunisian armies stationed there ... The generals warned Felipe that although the Vikings and Normans were great at amphibious assaults, we had no such training, so we decided to disembark in unguarded Tunisia instead. Of course an armed fleet moving here and there in the tunisian coast alarmed the tunisians and their fleet spotted us and defeated us, preventing our disembark. After hearing of the battle our fellow crusaders in Cyprus joined our war, while Tlemcen dishonored the Military Alliance with Tunisia. The infidels really have no honor!

Despite our first loss we went for a second try, defeated the tunisian fleet and landed ... phew ... we were only able to start our siege in January 1420, 6 months after the war started! During our siege of Tunisia they attacked us with a huge army of about 13000 soldiers, but luckily they were composed by crazy muslim peasants armed with long knifes and a tiny light cavalry. Arrows from our infantry and a cavalry charge with long spear destroyed them completely with little loses. Our greatest loses were in the sea due to transports sinking and now our army had about 7000 solders, with an extra reinforcement of 3k archers and 3k knights being slowly trained in Rhodes. While our ships were returning to get reinforcements in Rhodes the tunisian ships attacked them, and destroyed most of it, but at a great price for them too =( From now on we would need to transport reinforcements of only 3k at a time.

On May 22, 1421 we captured the province of Tunisia and after some more battles against large amounts of crazy peasants we invaded our primary target: Tripolitania. The siege lasted between September 14, 1421 and October 10, 1422. At the same time our small fleet managed to get our reinforcements on ground and we were marching to Kabylia. In 1423 we captured Kabylia finishing the insane resistance of Tunisia. The Tunisian Emir signed a peace treaty with us giving up his tirany in lands of Kabylia and Tripolitania =)

There was a great party in the streets as the catholics from North Africa were free from oppression. We moved our capital to Tripolitania, including the council, barracks, even whole churches and castles were transported to our new home! Despite this success, the promised underground community was less then impressive for Felipe. In Kabylia the community immediately embraced catholicism as the true church and all mosques were destroyed and burned, but in Tripolitania they remained stubborn and rebellious. The tunisian priest was called to answer for that and he promised us to bring them to light if we would fund education efforts. He was sure that if they heard the words of our Lord, they would believe.

On the economical side our conquests reduced our funds from 400k gold coins to a little over 100k and after paying our army and our military alchemists studying gunpowder weapons there was nothing left to increase our funds. Also many tunisian pirates sacked our ships transporting gold from Kabyilia, which reduced our collected taxes.

Here is an overview of our empire:

Our new neighbors in Tlemcen were very unhappy about our conquests and sent a piece of paper with lot's of small curved lines on it which our monks interpreted as a treat. Felipe preferred to interpret it as toilet paper and put it to good use. Another such hygiene item came from the Ghazi turks and we heard of a great alliance being formed threatening to attack us in case we invaded Tunisia again.

Chapter 3 - Interwar Period - 1424-1435

Following the peace agreement with Tunisia a period of much needed peace started in the lands of the Knights of North Africa. The position of the Knights was comfortable, well established in North Africa with weak neighbours, but on the other hand very unstable, because the majority of the population was composed by angry muslins, unhappy about being ruled by infidels. To solve this problem a large portion of our savings were invested in the hands of the tunisian priest, which promissed success in convincing our subjects to return to the true religion.

Despite peace in our borders, the same cannot be said about the rest of the world. The Hussite wars agains heretics in Bohemia lasted for decades, with many heretic victories. In Tlemcen there was Tribal unrest and then an invasion by the weak Tunisians, which forced Tlemcen into vassals. Soon after there the governament of Tunisia was overthrown by rebels, Tlemcen entered a Civil war and the Mamluks launched invasions against neighbours again and again: First against various arab countries, then against nubia, then against Sheep Turks, and so on. In fact, they did so many wars that in 1427 the population of Cyrenaica decided to join us! Because so much of the muslim male population died in the never ending wars, the christian underground minority managed to rebel and join our borders =) The same happened in 1428 with Quattara. Both were provinces with small populations and a muslim majority, but this was greatly celebrated, another sign that our mission was inspired and blessed.

But not everything was great news, due to a military defeat, the Kingdom of Cyprus, our ally since centuries, decided to break our alliance and become vassals of the Mamluks!!! Very sad news indeed ... To secure our kingdom against a Mamluk a military agreement was stablished with Portugal and Castille.

In 1433 another blessing came to our kingdom: The last mosque in Tripolitania was converted peacefully to a catholic church. Felipe was greatly satisfied by the sucess of the tunisian priest and he decided to reform to reform the council to give berbers power, for they were now considered a faithful christian people! The priest became bishop of Tripoli and the new council would be composed by: 2 berbers, 1 portuguese, 1 castillian, 1 french, 1 polish, 1 italian, 1 english and 1 german, to a total of 9. Unfortunately, as it was becoming tradition to have bad news right after good ones, just one day after this good news the Kindom of Cyprus was conquered by the Ghazi Turks and the great council stablished the goals of the new Kingdom of North Africa:

* Convert all our provinces in north africa to catholicism
* Conquer Tunisia
* Restablish the Kingdom of Cyprus
* Restablish the Kingdom of Jerusalem
* Defend fellow christian lands against muslims, when possible
* Move towards greater power for the grand-master and the council, greater army quality and greater focus on land instead of naval military

In the last year of the peace period there were revolts in the Kingdom of North Africa. First the arabs killed our missionaries and revolted and after a huge heretic rebellion started in Rhodes. The arabs were clearly not as easy to convince as the berbers, but our armies managed to silence them at least. In Rhodes the huge rebel army fortified themselves in our castles and made any reconquest impossible.
