When a communist sympathiser gunned down Sentor Kennedy in 1955, few could have seen the impact it would have on the world. President Eisenhower had largely been a failure in his role; the economy had sunk beyond repair and the U.S. had been humiliated by their failure in Korea. The Soviet Union however had gone from strength to strength, conning President Nixon during the Cuban Missile Crisis into removing their Missiles from Turkey. From President Nixon to Johnson to Ashbrook, the U.S. continued to decline. By the time President Reagan took over from President Carter, collapse was imminent.
Almost immediately after Ronald Reagan dissolved the United States and retired to his ranch, did several states band together under various political ideologies. After five years of minor border wars and unions, several independent states, several minor unions and three major pretenders to the United States emerged:
The American Republic, more commonly known as the Remnants, is the "official" successor state of the United States of America. As Vice President, few thought George H. W. Bush charismatic enough to be a dictator. However, after the U.S. was dissolved, he rallied all loyal patriots to the south and established a Republican dominated political system. In total George Bush spent 14 years as President of the American Republic, before handing over to Donald Rumsfeld who still rules today. Unrecognised by most it is centred in Atlanta.

The American People's Commonwealth is a nation of socialists who swear no loyalty to the Soviet Union, condemning it as a fascist abomination. In 1987, when the US finally collapsed, these like-minded activists enforced their iron grip, expelling all upper class living civilians (or at least the ones who hadn't left yet left). But now the economy was in shambles, and the industrial might of the Commonwealth has collapsed. Caught up in a never-ending political deadlock between Noam Chomsky and the Central Committee, this unusual enemy of the Soviets must get back on its feet before the Soviets or the southern Remnants take it all away.
The Union of American People's Republics is a communist nation occupying the West Coast, they claim to be the successor state to the USA. although they are recognized by the USSR and much of the world, they are very dependent on Soviet aid.
As communism swept most of Europe, Asia and blotches of Africa during the 1980s and 1990s, only three notable, European countries remained out of far left hands: Sweden, who blended into the background by declaring neutrality, Spain, which entered royal martial law in the 1970s and Britain, which has remained under the constent but stable rule of Queen Elizabeth II and SDP Prime Minister David Owen.
The UK was for years a close ally of the US, joining many of their interventionist wars and cherished the 'special relationship' between the two. However, the many adventures of NATO took their toll on the nation and strained the relationship. With the Spanish Crisis, the UK left NATO. Seeing Europe and the US get influenced more and more by far-leftists, the UK and Ireland began peace talks in 1980 to establish an independent Ulster, ending The Troubles and making the IRA irrelevant. They also isolated themselves from the rest of the world and formed the British Isles Protection League.
After succeeding Harold Wilson in 1976, James Callaghan would limp through the 1979 election with Liberal support. His second term would see continued stagnation, however the Falkland War in 1982 would redeem the otherwise lackluster government of Jim Callaghan. He would lose the 1984 election against Margaret Thatcher. Being replaced as Labour leader by the hard left Tony Benn, the Gang of 4 (David Owen, Roy Jenkins, Shirley Williams and Bill Rogers) would split from the party to form the Social Democratic Party. The SDP would overtake the Liberals and then Labour in the opinion polls. David Owen was set to become the next Prime Minister. Owen would win the 1989 election and would dominate British politics for decades.
David Owen has been Prime Minister since 1989
Presiding over the formation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, following the Ulster Accords, Owen would seek not to align with any American successor state, instead preferring to increase relations with the two Irish states.
