Playing Spain in the Grand Campaign (well, I was Castile, it's now 1480 or so), I've come across a silly little anomaly. I noticed that the army screen showed I was supporting roughly 14000 of each (cavalry + infantry), when in fact, I was supporting no army at all. I disbanded my army long ago to save costs. I looked all over, pressed F6 to bring up the demographics, brought up the screen that lists where all your armies are, and I had none, just as I expected. However, I'm still getting charged a ducat or two a month for a phantom army. What to do, what to do?

Also, Aragon took Granada (drats!) and that's okay, since I didn't get the BB for annexing. However, the Granadian army is in perpetual retreat towards the sea. Odd. a 1k army has been marching endlessly towards the Mediterranean for the last half century. How can I fix this?

Hmmmmm. Both issues were fixed when I reloaded the game. :) The Magic Reload did it again.

Look at it this way: You have to pay pensions to your old officers.:D

At some point in the past, did you load the game while troops were under construction? If you do this, the troops under construction spawn phantom doubles who must be maintained, and who are immortal until a save/reload. This is a known bug.

Maintenance for troops that don't exist

Background
- Started this game with Patch 1.03 installed.
- Playing GC as Sweden and the year is 1518.
- Control: Bremen, Mecklenburg, Jämtland, Finnmark, Hinterpommern, Danzig, Prussia, Mazovia, Podlasia, Wielkopolska, Poznan and Silesia in addition to the starting provinces. All provinces have been controlled for at least 30 years.
- Not involved in a war.
- No war exhaustion.
- Stab +3.
- BB: Slightly Tarnished.

Here is the problem:
The Army Maintenance shows 7,000 cav and 40 cannons that I do not have.
I have checked by disbanding everything I have. The only thing remaining is Hemming Gadh (leader) with 0 troops. The logs also show that I have no troops but the maintenance says differently.
This makes - and, I suspect, has for a long time cost me much extra maintenance since I've been quite a bit over the normal limit for decades now.

- Is this bug known?
- Can troops "disappear" so that you can't see them?
- Can you recommend a utility with which I can (safely) edit my save file to fix this? I don't want to have this extra load on my maintenance for the rest of the game.

Just restarted game and the maintenance now shows the correct figures when I start from the autosave as well as from the latest normal save.
Thus it would seem like my problem can be taken care of by restarting the game.

"Reformation happened to us" came as soon as I started the game in both cases so it would appear that these rather important events get put on "hold" until you restart the game.

This bug can be quite painful to your economy so it needs to be acknowledged.

EDITED:
I now found a previous thread on this bug:

Perhaps a moderator would like to move my two posts here to the end of that previous post... or you could leave it as it is. :)

If you're running into the problem others have reported (which is on the forum bug-list), you can avoid this problem by not reloading while troops are under construction, or by reloading immediately after all troop construction is complete. The problem is that reloads while troops are being built cause those troops to count double for maintenance purposes -- but the total gets corrected at the next reload, as you've found.
