The Imperial Japanese Navy is quite high-tech

I never noticed this until now. The IJN in 1939 started out with a pretty solid navy with a lot of good ships researched. No wonder they were the third largest force at the start of WW2. Shame that all their ships were sunk to the ocean...

I had all DLC's from day 1 and I started playing more than a year before MtG was released. I just wish Paradox would include more features in the base game instead of a $20 DLC.
Yeah, but they do go on sale quite often so it kind of cancels out. At least I got 75% off on everything except MtG and LaR. You just have to follow PDX 2 years behind their schedule, you can get better polished games at lower price that way.

I believe they have a base radar researched. Which is good enough.

I was replying to this:
"No wonder they were the third largest force at the start of WW2. Shame that all their ships were sunk to the ocean... "

They did not have radar on any of their fleet. If they had, things might have been quite different with their CV advantage. It also helped that the US broke their code for Midway and knew their plans and location, and had radar on their ships.

The Greater East Asian Empire!

I have found that spreading your navy as wide as possible is helpful in reducing the Allied naval power per sea region. Especially once US joins the war, it is hard to offset their numerical advantage. However, it is useful to get good patrol force. For example, I used 2 CV + 2 BB/HC + 6 CA + 6DD based on the recommended screening ratio. Make sure you set it on medium/low patrol mode because you don't want it to run into strong US carrier force.

For example, in this sea region, I barely got a numerical advantage. Luckily, the AI is stupid enough not to deploy more ships in critical regions (where the invasion is likely to take place). So luck is quite important in winning.

While intelligence is extremely crucial, you still need to have the strength and skill to back it up. Midway is still a difficult fight for US because they were outnumbered. Had the US pilot not being so lucky in making the decision to attack the Jap carriers (instead of returning to his ship), there would not be such a catastrophic lost for the Japs.

The outcome would mostly likely be the same as Coral Sea, for the US at best.

@EliteWehrmacht

Major,
Instead of wasting valuable ships, especially CV and slow BBs on Patrol and burning tons of fuel, I like to build scouting frigates - which are DDs with engine, max sonar and radar, leave the battery on it and add AA. It can be built fast, is fast and can outrun most everything it encounters except planes (don't patrol along coast or in shallows), put 5 of those with a mine sweeping frigate (dd with engine and mine sweeping gear, and a AA DD and set it up to "never engage:" and send it out to patrol with your big boys set for "strike force".

When not doing a naval invasion look for natural chokepoint zones that the US and AUS will need to come through and patrol those heavily, with your strike force in a nearby port waiting.

Very smart move. I don't have the fanciful ship upgrades from MTG, but I agree with having the strike force + DD patrol combination. I had to import almost all my fuel from neutral oil-exporting countries. USSR did not export any because it was under invasion from the west. Luckily I conquered the oil regions of DEI before USA joined (Bypass Phillipines focus) so I had some oil produced.

That's right I forgot you don't have DLC. Good move on the Oil. I ended up going for Yemen and Kuwait as Japan. Well there is 3 little british colonies up there, and 2 of them have oil, but I took all 3. :)

Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq are also very good sources too. Iran has like only 12 divisions defending. I used the forces from India to attack there.

Yes, I was thinking about Iraq pretty hard, but ended up passing on it and taking South Africa and then moving to South America and eventually Panama and the canal, which sealed the allies doom.

I also think having way more heavy and escort carriers, more cruisers and more aircrafts helped the usa. They kept pumping new shiny ships out during the entire war duration; the naval industrial production and quality the USA achieved is simply stunning.
BY 1944 the US navy was more than 10x bigger than its japanese counterpart.

They did have radar, that the Japanese didn't adopt or try to adopt much stuff is a frequent misconception that tries to handwave all the more complicated matters that were in reality.

Some of the ships in Midway did have Radar, the Destroyers Akigumo, Makigumo, Kazegumo, Yugumo and Hamakaze for example.

The specific radar derivative technology they didn't have were VT fuses and Blindfire capable Fire Control but had better developed Optical Fire Control.

I took Siam first, for rubber. Then Iran for oil. And in the end of 38 China gives me reason to attack, after event Chinese provocation. So there's no Marco Polo Bridge debuf. It allows me to conquer and divide China without being in war with Allies.
