Hey Yogi, love the alternate AAR. I am a bit of a lurker as my posts show.
I could see Germany secretly plotting with pro-Monarchy forces to bring the UK back into a traditional imperial nation. Many of the monarchy were closet Nazis and I wonder if this would play into their plans to block recovery plans in parliament.

Being a closet Nazi in mid-1930´s is one thing, supporting postwar Third Reich ruled by Himmler(!) is something completely different. I really doubt that there´d be any notable pro-German politicians left in the British parliament in the situation of this AAR. True, some might argue for mild form of detente based on the acceptance of new status quo in order to be able to focus on wellfare reforms and saving the Empire, but even these politicians would definitively not be willing to do any kind of a co-operation with the Nazi regime. And the common British people and the personel of the armed forces are definitively too hostile towards Germany to accept such theoretical coup attempts anyway.

Hi all,

In 1947 I ran into the event-wall, which more or less put the history of the world on hold until Germany was defeated. So I've had to make duplicates of all these events and chage the NOT { exists = GER } trigger for something else, and this has taken a while. I'm now testing that the events trigger as they should. As soon as this problem has been fixed, whitin the next few days, I'll be back with an update.

Thanks for your patience!

I've got a question that's not got to do with an update. Since the war ended favourabley for Germany, that is, when Himmler took over, what do the German people now make of Hitler? And, since Himmler was the one to actually lead them to victory, and the postwar period, what's his standing like abroad? Still seen like the sinister figure in black, or has he become more sympathetic?

To the Germans, Himmler is the guy who nearly lost them the war, after Hitler, the real Führer and genius was treasonously taken away from them. Then came Himmler and all the retreats (except Stalingrad had already happened, but anyway...)

Abroad, Himmler is seen as a vily and ruthless politician. He's less dispised than Hitler was because he allowed (pretty much forced, actually) the emigration of the Jews of Europe, rather than executing them all.

Well, India IS a member of the commonwealth, just going by the rules of not being a commonwealth realm (read: not accepting the Queen as HoS) :)

OK, thank you all for your patience. A new update and a new chapter (1948) will come relatively soon (a week, ten days at most). Things will heat up soon enough!

Also, like I did in the EOFM-thread, I'm asking you all to go vote in the AARland Choice AARwards (see my sig). If it's for one of my AARs, well, HOORAY! but in any case, go there and cast your ballot. If you have no idea on what to vote for, have a look at the ones many other people like and choose among them.

THANKS!

CHAPTER III
1946-1947

Refugees, India 1947

1947: Decolonisation and deoccupation

Egypt leads the way
The end of the war brought turmoil to Egypt. The Egyptian population, including King Farouk II, who had stolidly refused all British proposals to join the war on the allied side, were solidly pro-German, and London feared that if nothing was done, a full scale popular nationalist rebellion, possibly backed by the German SD, could oust them and place the Suez canal under German control. The alternative, to maintain a military occupation of the entire country did not seem either feasible nor justifiable to the Atlee government, as Britain maintained its hostility towards the German Reich precisely on the grounds that it occupied and oppressed other nations. Defending it through the distinction between “white” nations and “indigenous” ones was not an option in the mid XX century, as it had been in the XIX.

In an attempt at soothing the Egyptians and reducing the aggravating presence of British troops in Egypt, Britain decided to grant her de facto full autonomy in internal and external affairs, although still based upon the principles of the Anglo-Egyptian treaty of 1936, i.e. continued British military control of the Suez canal and of Sudan. This of course was deeply unsatisfying to Egyptian public opinion, although since no formal agreement was required, Britain could push through the new Egyptian status unilaterally. The Atlee government did make one important concession to Egyptian Nationalism; the mutual defence pact from the 1936 treaty was rescinded, as was Britain’s obligation to arm and train the Egyptian Army. While this played to Egyptian national pride, London decided on this step knowing full well that the plans for a Jewish state in Palestine were progressing quickly, and laboured to stay well clear of any resulting military entanglements.

A Cambodian puppet Kingdom
By 1947, the strain on the colonial Empire of France was becoming unmanageable, and all kinds of solutions were considered by the Government of General de Gaulle in Algiers to keep it together in some form. In the most valuable province of the Empire, Indochina, it was decided to set up Cambodia as a formally independent puppet state under the Royal House of Shianouk, thereby facilitating the use of its manpower for keeping the more valuable provinces of Vietnam, Cochin china and Laos in line. Thus the Kingdom of Cambodia was proclaimed in may of 1947.

The independence of India and Pakistan
After the surrender of Japan, the opposition in India to continued British rule had become too intense for London to ignore and in early 1947 Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten was dispatched as last Viceroy of India to oversee the formalisation of Indian independence. From the beginning it was clear to him that the deep-rooted antagonism between Muslims and Hindus of the former Raj would prove the major stumbling-block on the road to a peaceful separation from the Empire. Mountbatten was able to form a relationship of mutual trust with both Congress Party leader Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohammed Ali Jinnah of the Islamic League. Despite the efforts of the three, sectarian violence exploded during 1947 as minorities were persecuted in both emerging nations and millions of refugees clogged the roads. As 1947 progressed, however, the war in China, where Soviet troops drew ever closer to the northern borders of India did much to cool of internal passions – and although by the time of independence on November 1st 1947 both countries had gone through a measure of ethnic cleansing, a potential border war over the contested province of Jammu and Kashmir could be avoided through a village-by-village plebiscite after British mediation. The majority of the contested areas voted for joining Pakistan. For the moment, the new states of India and Pakistan remained in the British Commonwealth with King George VI as official head of State. In India, he continued to be represented by Lord Mountbatten acting as Governor-General, while in Pakistan Jinnah would hold that office. As their first act of foreign policy, India and Pakistan signed a treaty of non-aggression and initiated talks on a mutual defence pact (also to include the United Kingdom, Afghanistan and later, Burma) clearly aimed against the Soviet threat. For a short time longer, while the situation in China clarified, the British remained in Burma, finally withdrawing in April of the following year.

Birth pains of Israel
From the end of the Second World war in 1945, the Jews of Europe took advantage of the opportunity to escape Nazi oppression, for while the Holocaust had been put on hold from the time negotiations with the west began, ill treatment and persecution had not. Millions of Jewish Poles, Ukrainians, Hungarians and Romanians flooded into Italy, Greece and French Algeria but above all Britain. From there, many sought passage to the United States, which was however as reluctant as Britain to receive such a deluge of destitute refugees (in the tradition of the Catholic Kings of Spain, Germany did not allow Jewish refugees to bring more than two thousand Reich marks out of the country). As a result, Britain lifted the limitations on Jewish immigration to Palestine, brushing aside Arab opposition by military force. Several Arab revolts were firmly put down, initially by the British, but soon the swelling ranks of the Jewish defence organisation Haganah allowed it to cow all opposition to continued settlement. By January 1st 1948, in the “Sixth Aliyah”, an additional four million Jews had settled in what would become the Republic of Israel, outstripping the Arab population of Palestine by a factor of at least 5:1. Already Palestinians were fleeing their homeland for Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt.

The European Union
During 1947, Germany put the final touches on the launching of its great political project, the European Union, which would include all the occupied nations of Western Europe, plus the Reich Protectorate of Lombardy, the former Italian Social Republic in northern Italy (after the Reich had annexed South Tyrol and Venice, in order to gain a “breathing hole” into the Mediterranean). The reluctant acceptance of the ageing Duce was bought with the position of a life-time appointment for the doyen of fascism as Head of the Grand Council of Europe (the legal assembly), a position equivalent to Head of State but mostly ceremonial in nature. Real power would be in the hands of the executive, namely the President of the Union. The first holder of the office was to be Léon Degrelle, Himmler’s stooge through and through and the man Hitler had declared was “the son he would have wanted”. The interests of the German Reich, “a member of but not subordinate to” the European Union were to be represented by an Ambassador-General with power of veto in the Grand Council. Other prominent collaborationist leaders of occupied Europe such as Pierre Laval and Vidkun Quisling where offered briefs in Degrelle’s cabinet. The launching date for the Union was set at January 1st, 1948.
