I am having a question that I do not see really in the ship tech tree and something that frankly, is missing from the Japan series.

The I-4000, a Sub that literally could have changed naval and air combat forever, I am just curious, will we get to see this engineering wonder of Naval and air combination? Or will this be up to the Mods? I know it was a pain to launch and land, but still, the thought of a sub able to launch sea planes is something of an interesting concept, in fact according to some Documentries I say, they painted their planes in the last days of the war in American Colors to try and confuse the pilots, still...

Will we get to see this in action? Or will we have to wait for the modders to add in this amazing Submarine?

sadly its not in the game but should be moddable. I feel like carriers only being able to launch 3 planes might not be that useful (unless they happen to be capable of carrying nukes ;))

Since quite a few subs could carry spotters, it's only sensible to allow that option in game, and from there a carrier variant isn't much different. Should come in in one of the early naval mods.

On it's war-changing capability, it's direct combat capability was meager, but used as a sub should be, in ambush, it could be good. The planes would be a massive advantage for convoy attacks and so on, and the ability to pop up anywhere in the world for a cheeky port strike is pretty nice. The 800kg bombs should be able to demolish pretty much anything they hit.

It's biggest wartime problem was deployment. If it'd been sent out to hit the Gatun locks as soon as it had been delivered, it'd be considered a massively better design than it is now, after them farting around for two years after delivery.

Don't you mean the I-400 class? At least from Daniel's stream of Japan, the 4th sub tech level was the Sen-toku / I-400 class. Althought from what the devs said, it will be a sub like the others, without planes.

Yes, you are correct, I seem to have an extra 0 there, sorry about that misplaced zero.

Woah, I, one of the big guys at Paradox actually replied to me? Wow, and yes, happy to hear that it will be doable as a mod. But sad that it isn't going to be using their sea planes in the actual game. Might have to try modding in the future.

And are you referring to Ballistic Missile Subs? because that would be scary, combining Japanese Naval doctrines with German missile tech. Still this is going to be interesting, but you never know if those three planes would make a difference, especially in places where they don't expect planes.

Hold on. The I-400-class is included as a late-war, conventional submarine? Wouldn't a 6,500-ton WW2 sub be a bloated, unwieldy mess in combat? They had a dive-time of 56 seconds, leaving them vulnerable to surprise aircraft attack. They had a test depth of 100 meters. Submerged, they could only make 12 knots.

I think @Orlunu might be right and the I-201-class might be a better late-war boat. Of course, 1 month from release is probably a bad time to start pointing out nit-pickings :)

It would be nice to be able to destroy the Panama Canal (one of the likely uses of carrier subs). Unlike the Suez the Panama needed vary large locks that would have taken years to rebuild (sink a few ships in the Suez it would not taken that long clear). It would give reason for Japan to destroy them & the U.S. strong reason to devote resources to defend them. I don't know if you can have a map change during the game?

There is the I-201 which coincidentally already got mentioned, it's actually a submarine not an impractical experimental toy that wasn't even used for commerce raiding like the I-400. The I-201 is in many ways similar to the German XXI type, including in the low numbers produced and the intended production method of assembling from prefab section. Fastest submarine in the war underwater.
