The HRE just disbanded itself in 1540!

I don't have a screenshot of the actual event, so you'll just have to take my word for it. Anyhow, was in a war with Austria last night and presumably the Emperor snuffed it and suddenly the HRE was disbanded because there was 'no eligible leader'. Admittedly, most of the HRE had turned protestant and Austria had a female heir - but doesn't that mean the role should go to Spain, Portugal or further afield if there are no HRE based possibilities?

Female heir leading to HRE disbanding is a bug that we're working on a fix for.

Its a bug? Sounds like its working correctly if you ask me. Without any valid HRE princes to be emperor, the empire should dissolve Just because France or the Commonwealth is catholic doesn't mean that they should just randomly get the crown. Of course you could add a mechanic for when no one inside the empire is eligible to be the emperor, then the other nearby catholic countries could try to claim the title and even fight over it.

Wouldn't the title revert to the pope/' papal state if Far enough back pre-Napoleon era?

No. The Pope never personally held the title of Holy Roman Emperor; he merely had the power and authority to bestow the title upon the King of the Germans by coronation.

Yeah, had this happen in my current Iron Price run. Kind of hurt me some since I was allied to Austria who was the Emperor, yet helped me in other ways as it was obviously A LOT easier expanding into northern Germany.

If I should post the save somewhere, I can; although I'm way past this point now.

same here, HRE disbanded in 1469, which somehow helps my expansion (i'm silesia) but doesn't protect me anymore from hostile poland

How did this get added to the beta before release? Why isn't there script to disinherit an heiress if pragmatic sanctions can't be passed?

It's 1480-something, and I'm anticipating the HRE breaking up - the Emperor has a daughter, and I don't believe I've seen a message about pragmatic sanction so far. On the one hand we are allies, and on the other, it would make expanding in Germany easier.

I had the exact opposite bug happening in my current game - female HRE emperor. Austria got female heir, passed Pragmatic Sanction, the old ruler died when she was still below 15 years of age and HRE emperorship stayed with Austria.
/EDIT: Or is this WAD? I thought the HRE emperor could only be a male ruler.

Nope, historically, there were times when non-HRE nations tried to get elected as Emperor. It's unlikely to happen (because non-HRE nations get a significant penalty with the electors) but it's not and should not be impossible.

Sorry for bringing this back from the dead, bit it just happened to me. Religious War starts, the Austrian ruler is replaced by female, HRE gone. Playing latest version

holyromanempire.exe has encountered an unexpected error and will now close.
