And Hohenzollern.
original

The dust has settled, and the guns have fallen silent on all fronts. After the second war to end all wars, the old order has been thoroughly reduced to ash. In its place a new order rises like a phoenix.

Gone are the days of the Concert of Eurasia and the Imperial Century. Gone are the fascist regimes in Asia, Africa, and the Eimericas, which hastened their own downfall in their mad bid to conquer the world. Three titans dominate a world that has just emerged from the horrors of war.

In the east, the mighty Chinese Empire remains the undisputed master of Asia and the Pacific, with the Ming dynasty, the House of Zhu, ruling territory spanning three continents. But this behemoth of industry, boasting one of the largest armies in the world, is not infallible. The Chinese did not lose the war, but they didn't win it either. Four years of warfare took a toll on the Celestial Empire. The ambitions of Wang Jingwei and his Guomindang Party have subverted Chinese democracy, and the Chinese people languish under an effective military dictatorship carried on by his successors, General Chiang Kai-Shek and his son Jiang Jingguo. The Empire's western borders, which had been a thorn in Nanjing's side during the war, still threatens to escalate any small skirmish with the Soviets into war. And the colonies, having contributed much for the war effort, are growing tired of being ruled from Nanjing...

The newest superpower and most dangerous threat to world peace is the Commune of Soviet Socialist Republics, or Soviet Commune. Established after equalist revolutionaries overthrew the weak democratic republic which itself overthrew and sent the House of Rurikovich into exile, under the leadership of the chairmen Lenin and Trotsky the Soviets have spread the revolution worldwide, toppling the monarchies of North Eimerica and inadvertently giving rise to fascism in the Old World. And with the Soviets' decisive victory in the war, they have now expanded their influence deep into Europe and Central Asia.

20170518121002_1.jpg

The oldest superpower, the Roman Reich, led by the Hohenzollerns and their new chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, is exhausted by six years of constant war both around the world and at home. Its capital of Berlin lies in ruins; the temporary capital, Constantinople, isn't better off.

index.php

Berlin, 1946

In 1939, the fascist Angeloi dynasty and their supporters attempted a coup against the Kaiser, starting a terrible civil war which devastated most of the imperial heartland. In 1941, the Angeloi invaded Russia and soundly lost. The Reich was powerless to prevent the loss of its eastern provinces to the Soviets not only because it was in no shape to wage another war but also because of a new terrifying weapon stolen "invented" by Soviet scientists.

20170504153132_1.jpg

Multiple nations had attempted to split the atom and harness unimaginable amounts of power for use as a weapon. India, China, Rome, the Angeloi, and Russia all sought to control the atom, but it was the Soviets who got the bomb first, with horrible results. Nuclear weapons annihilated the cities of Warsaw, Dresden, and Königsberg, ushering in the atomic age.

In 1946, the Reich's long road to recovery is just beginning, and it will take years before it returns to its former glory. But with the rise of nuclear weapons, any war with the Soviets to free its citizens in Eastern Europe could potentially end in the annihilation of the Reich. If the Reich develops its own nuclear weapons to country this, any war could possibly cause the complete extinction of the human species. Both the Romans and Soviets know this. Instead of military action, both now wage war in the diplomatic sphere, competing with each other for influence over regional powers. The winner of this Cold War will decide the fate of the world. The Reich stands for the cause of freedom, capitalism, monarchy, and meritocracy, while the Soviets want nothing better than to finish what Lenin and Trotsky started and spread the proletarian revolution to the rest of the world. There is also a third option, the sleeping giant of China. Turning inwards and away from the world, the dragon slumbers in isolation. Should it turn outward again like it did before the war, it could form a third bloc in the Cold War. After all, Wang Jingwei's ambition to "restore" a Sinocentric world order hasn't been finished...

An Iron Curtain is descending across Eurasia, and with it the curtain is rapidly falling on the Reich and its ruling dynasty. The House of Hohenzollern, which had ruled the most powerful empire in the world for almost a thousand years, risks being consigned to the dustbin of history. Centuries of achievements are now coming under fire. Will the Hohenzollerns reclaim their glory, or will they die in nuclear fire with the rest of humanity? Or will they be deposed by their own people and their empire torn asunder by the godless equalists?

Who will create the New World Order?

(I did not create this, obviously)
(Edit: link seems to be dead, but it's the intro credits for The Sixties, an old documentary series on CNN. I'll find a replacement link at some point.
Probably.
Eventually.
Maybe.)

Hello, and welcome to "The Hohenzollern Empire 5," the fifth stage of my Hohenzollern Roman Empire megacampaign, which was begun in 1066 in CKII and played through EUIV, Victoria II, and Hearts of Iron 3 (not 4!). This will be the first stage stage of the extended megacampaign, spanning the years from 1946 to 2100 and bridging the gap with Stellaris, which will begin in 2100. I am using a heavily modded version (1.09 I think?) of the New World Order mod by simsulla as a base for this campaign.

In the CKII portion of the story, the (custom) Hohenzollern dynasty, aided by their allies and (somewhat) loyal vassals the Habsburgs and the real Hohenzollerns (designated in this AAR as Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen) conquered, crusaded, and inherited their way to claim the imperial thrones of the Greeks and Germans, with Friedrich the Great and Friedrich the Glorious uniting the lands of the two heirs of Rome and Saint Wilhelmina uniting the eastern and western halves of Christianity, but battled for centuries against the barbarian hordes from the east and west for the very survival of Christianity and the new Roman Empire.

In the EUIV segment, the barbarian hordes have been defeated for good, and the Reich progressed into first the Age of Exploration and the Renaissance and then into the Enlightenment. Colonies have been established all across the world, and the barbarians have been defeated and crushed in their own homelands.

In the Victoria II installment, the Reich under Kaisers Sigismund II and Franz Joseph I quickly caught on to the winds of industrialization blowing out of Tran Vietnam and led the world into the industrial revolution, ushering a long era of (mostly) peace and prosperity known as the Imperial Century. Much of Africa and South Eimerica were brought under Berlin's control, expanding the empire to a size no previous empire ever reached. However, this era was not without its problems. The barbarian empires continued to collapse, inviting dangerous ideologies to take root in their lands. The various Chinese dynasties united together under one banner which rapidly became a force to be reckoned with.

The First World War, also known as the Weltkrieg, and its horrendous slaughter ended the Imperial Century for good along with countless other kingdoms and empires. As old ideas faded away, new ones took their places. Fascism and equalism grew in popularity, sweeping away ancient regimes in North Eimerica, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia and replacing them with horrifying totalitarian dictatorships. Even the Hohenzollerns have ran into their own set of problems, obstacles that they had to overcome to ensure their empire's continued existence.

The Second World War, which took place in HOI3, was even worse than the first. Beginning when the Indian Raj under the madman Mohandas Gandhi invaded Turkestan in 1939 and escalating when the fascist Markos Angelos and his followers rebelled against the young Kaiser Otto a week later, the world was plunged into chaos over the next five years. The Reich tore itself apart in a brutal civil war that laid waste to hundreds of cities and killed millions of citizens. The Indians embarked on a systematic and downright evil campaign of genocide against poor minorities, most notably Muslims and Turks. The Chinese Empire succumbed to military dictatorship when the Angeloi launched an invasion of mainland China and its many colonies. An ill-fated invasion of the Soviet Commune by the Angeloi resulted in three Roman cities being reduced to rubble in one day and large swathes of Roman territory being occupied by the equalists, who have no intention of letting go of their conquests.

Since the darkest days of World War II, the world is still recovering from its war wounds, and the Cold War has developed from its modest beginnings to a hot competition between the weakened Roman Reich, the military-dominated Chinese Empire, and the rising Commune of Soviet Socialist Republics, which has seized large parts of the Reich's land in Europe. Along with increased testing of nuclear weapons, this created a politically conservative climate. In the Reich, Konrad Adenauer, a staunch anti-equalist who nevertheless pushed for center-left social reforms such as civil rights for all Romans and expanded healthcare for the elderly and the poor, was appointed to the Chancellery after the resignation of his wartime predecessor, Franz von Papen. Kaiser Otto I von Hohenzollern rules over an empire broken by years of civil war, with millions of his citizens suffering under Soviet oppression. Tensions are on the rise both within the Reich and around the world, and even if the Soviets or Chinese do not make a move, his own people may decide that nine centuries of Hohenzollern rule may be more than enough...

Every beginning of the decade I will post a world update and a "look back" on the previous decade's events (for the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s), with a focus on culture and society instead of politics. I will also post story updates from the point of view of certain characters instead of the usual gameplay chapter.

I will attempt to limit my own expansion (no declaring war on anybody without an appropriate in-game event/decision or a justifiable in-universe reason), and console commands/save reloading/save editing will be used for balance, better immersion, AI advantages, glitches, crashes, and other emergency situations. Due to the nature of this campaign's mod being based on an old version of New World Order (older than 2017) and the extensive modifications I have done, there are bound to be bugs and glitches at some points. I apologize for any inconveniences in narrative this may cause.

I will also attempt to disable most if not all attempts by the AI to declare war on their own; they can declare war when the relevant event or decision fires for them. Once we pass the modern day (18 May 2017 as of this posting), I will slightly relax this rule and cut back on custom events to allow for a dynamic evolution of the world in preparation for the final transition into Stellaris.

I hope you'll enjoy the next stage of our journey.

Saints Wilhelmina and Gunhilda, grant us victory.

Technical details

I am playing on beta patch 3.04 with all major DLCs/expansion packs. As for NWO, I'm pretty sure I'm using version 1.09 or 1.11 with some additions from 1.12 and the latest version. I've also added some features and mechanics from the Cold War Enhanced mod by Settin to Trieste.

Credit(s)

Thanks to @simsulla for creating the brilliant mod which formed the basis of this campaign. Without them I would have just directly skipped to Stellaris. Though I am a bit disappointed that I couldn't get the HOI-NWO converter to work.:p A shoutout to @Settin to Trieste for developing Cold War Enhanced.

Thanks to @dragoon9105 for letting me take some "creative liberties" with his own megacampaign. There will be some characters and references from his megacampaign in this AAR.

Thanks to /u/Ludie_Engmann for writing the NWO AAR on Reddit that inspired this segment. I never would have gotten the idea to write a NWO continuation if I hadn't read that AAR.

And thanks to all of the readers who have stuck with me through five AARs! I couldn't have gotten here without all of you! Thank you all so much!

Disclaimer

This AAR will cover the modern era, especially the events of the last seventy years up to the present day, and as such can and will cover, intentionally or not, topics that may be controversial in the current political climate, to say the least. I do not do not endorse any extremist political views that may be featured, and if I do unintentionally, please don't start a flame war. Please remain civil.

Also, some story arcs may have been inspired by existing works of fiction (that are copyrighted). In that case, I do not own said existing works of fiction or claim to own them. Don't sue me.

And so, the Hohenzollerns enter modernity. Monarchy, equalism, democracy; who shall emerge victorious?

Also, I know that there have been several references to Supernatural, but I just realized that the section containing previous installments is called 'The Road So Far'.

I Spy a Black and Gold Flag, Looks like the Austrians might be having quite a bit of influence on this AAR already

I hope you're ready for "Economic Warfare 101" because that's the only way I've found to effectively get things done in NWO.

I'll just hop into this ;)

The fifth stage is set, three superpowers vying for absolute control (or "balance", as the Reich says). You and China have roughly the same population, but Russia has the best toys. The Reich should be clear of radical factions considering how the last one went, but China seems to have some and it's possible Russia does as well.

Now we just have to see how things play out before moving to the final stage... Who will be the first to grasp the stars?

Carry on my Wayward Son intensifies:p
That was a great ending to HOI and a great intro to NWO.
Thanks. I had been planning that ending (minus the whole Supernatural plot arc) and the NWO introduction for a long time, and it's nice to hear that it doesn't feel too forced.

That's the war flag of the Reich. Not that the Reich's going to go to war anytime soon, but still...:D
I hope you're ready for "Economic Warfare 101" because that's the only way I've found to effectively get things done in NWO.
I may or may not have broken a lot of the economic mechanics of both NWO while "converting" the campaign and integrating CWE, but it'll probably still be there. Plus, I can also do espionage and a whole lot of other stuff.:D
The stage is set.Maestro, choose your instrument and play!
P.S.:I noticed, that population is in two-three times lower than before 1936.How you would cover it?
I retconned that. The prewar censuses are inaccurate, and the data was messed up by the war. Plus a lot of people died in any case.:p
Wait a second, why are the Chinese democracy when the Romans are significantly more democratic than they are?
Because the Reich leans towards meritocracy (and technically doesn't have elections or a constitution), and China has democratic traditions. The military junta retains a facade of democracy despite its, well, dictatorship.
I'm wondering what will be this world's Yugoslavia
You'll find out soon enough. But let me give you a hint: who does Ousabe Wyota Witko look like?
I'll just hop into this ;)
Very Interested...
Welcome! Glad to have you onboard for this ride.

Well, if the Reich was clear of radical factions, I'd have little challenge and would end up with a WC by Stellaris. Then I'd have to go full Anniona and embrace the worm start killing everybody.:p
There are quite a few nations, that would play it's role. And not all of them're in Eimerica...

Have you noticed that Reich's population even with occupied lands is twice lower than population of whole Reich before WWII?Also,I'm curious what is "Kaiserreich" gov type. All in all, you're right. But what'll be when Vietnam will happen?..
Kaiserreich government type is just a custom government type for the Reich equal to absolute monarchy, except I have all political parties allowed. Other meritocracies have a meritocratic monarchy government type which is exactly the same as "Kaiserreich."

You'll find out soon enough. But let me give you a hint: who does Ousabe Wyota Witko look like?
I don't know. But I'm guessing like a famous communist resistance leader turned president?
Edit: reading the relevant parts again, it gives some subtle foreshadowing. Nicely done!

Damn it, sorry Zenphoenix, couldn't get the speech done in time.

However, I have decided to do something a little more... interesting.

"Have you ever fought two civil wars?"
"Well, er, technically, er, nah."
"Have you ever fought the Chinese, y'know, a real superpower?"
"Nah, nah."
"Have you ever tried appointing someone based on their merit, rather than noble lineage?"
*shakes head*
"Alright! It seems I am going to have to teach you, how to be a real Hohenzollern!"

HEY!
We are the Hohenzollerns!
HEY!
We are the Hohenzollerns!
HEY!

Now listen closely....
Here's a little lesson in meritocracy,
This is going down in history!
If ya wanna be a Great Power number one,
You have to catch a Angeloi on the run!
Just follow my moves, and attack their armies,
careful not to annoy the Soviets *steps on Polonia*
No, don't touch that!

Now look at this nuke, that I just found,
When I say go, be ready to drop,
GO! *drops on Konigsberg*
Drop it on Gabriel, not me! Ugh,
Let's try something else.
Now watch and learn, here's the deal,
We'll kill the Soviets by Angel spells! Ha ha ha- *Soviets nuke heaven*
WHAT ARE THEY DOING!?

Na, ma na na na na na,
Na na na na na na na
