The Hohenzollern Empire 3

Long ago, the kingdoms and empires of the world lived together in peace and harmony.

Then, everything changed when the barbarians attacked.

Only the Kaisers of Rome, masters of Europe and defenders of a united Christendom, could stop them. After hundreds of years of almost constant warfare, they succeeded.

Tales were told of how they heroically put the barbarians in their place and ended the long and costly wars with Persia and the Lithuanian-Ruthenian Commonwealth.

Friedrich the Great, Friedrich the Glorious, and Saint Wilhelmina joined the German Holy Roman Empire and Greek Eastern Roman Empire together into the Romisches Reich, a society where Christians, Germans, non-Christians, and non-Germans from all over Europe and the world can live and thrive together in peace and harmony.

Berlin was designated the capital of this great land, in the past a shining beacon of light and civilization in a sea of squabbling pagans and bloodthirsty heathens and now the pinnacle of human social and cultural progress.

The Kaisers accomplished many remarkable things in their lives, but sadly, one after another their times in this world came to an end, and each in turn was called to heaven. And like the cycle of the seasons, the cycle of imperial succession began anew.

However, things aren't as simple as they seem.

Only the Hohenzollerns can bring balance to the world. They most certainly did. But keeping it is another matter.

It has been 1836 years since the birth of Christ. Although the era of the Commonwealth Wars and the Sunset Invasion has long passed, the Romans are not living in a time of peace. Outside the borders of the Reich, tension and anger boil below a cover of peace and stability.

The Persian Empire convulses in the throes of revolution, weakened by centuries of war against its neighbors. The memory of the deadly but failed Persian Revolution and its radical ideas of liberalism remains fresh in the minds of the Persian people, eager to see the centuries of humiliations fired upon them by the Romans ended for good.

Scandinavia is but a shell of its former self. Land had been lost in Denmark to the Reich, and the end of the Commonwealth Wars over Finland saw the region divided with Russia. With the help of the Reich its Eimerican colonies gained independence, reducing the empire to its core northern territories. With the invention of new weapons of war, the prestige and importance of the berserkers and Vikings, long part of the Norse military and society, waned. And despite the Fylkir being the supreme spiritual and political authority and large reforms being enacted, the Norse peoples are not immune to the forces of nationalism and liberalism, some even daring to question his authority. The Russians and Yavdi are eager to defeat their age-old enemies in Scandinavia again, despite Roman attempts to preserve the peace.

The Romuva Kingdom of Lithuania's rise to greatness was swift and terrifying, but its decline was even faster and bloodier than anybody could have imagined. In the mid-17th century, while the Reich was distracted in the devastating Fifty Years' War, Lithuania, with assistance from Scandinavia, secured a surprising victory over Russia, annexing much of Ruthenia and proclaiming the Lithuanian-Ruthenian Commonwealth. Over the next several decades, though, as the Reich began to recover its strength it joined with Russia in chipping away at the borders of the Commonwealth, and although the Lithuanian military was among the best in the world and capable of standing up to the imperial legions, eventually the Roman and Russian forces overwhelmed the Lithuanian-Scandinavian forces. If Scandinavia in the nineteenth century was a shadow of its former self, Lithuania was a shadow of its own shadow, forced to relinquish many of its gains and retreat to its core Lithuanian territories. Its people are angry, demanding why they had fallen so far. They sought fervently the restoration of the Commonwealth to its former glory. And so, viewing the government as too reactionary to help them, they turned to revolution and liberalism as well.

In the Far East, the Ming Dynasty has almost total control over the Asian continent, with only the Indian Empire standing in the way of complete hegemony. Two other Chinese dynasties also exist in harmony with the Ming on both sides of the Pacific, but it is only a matter of time before they succumb to the forces of nationalism.

Empires and kingdoms dominate the continents known as the Eimericas. The once-mighty Triple Alliance has been reduced to a shell of its former glory, having lost territory to all of its neighbors. The Nahua are eager to avenge their humilation and get their revenge against the Tawatinsuyuans, Chinese, and Fox. In the north lies the only European colony to successfully gain its independence from its motherland, Kanata, which with Roman protection is in a prime position to expand against its neighbors. In the south, the Empire of Tawatinsuyu, a member of the Chinese tributary network, looks to the Reich's colonies and desires nothing more than to unite the entire continent under the banner of the Sapa Inca.

And in Africa, only two empires have managed to escape the colonial conquests of Rome and India: the Jewish Empire of Abyssinia and the West African Empire of Mali.

Not even the Hohenzollerns, safely in control of the largest and most powerful empire in the world, are safe from the forces of nationalism. In the next century, empires and nations will rise and fall, and new dogmas will arise to supplant older ones. Throughout this turbulent time of change and modernity, the Hohenzollerns will lead the world into a new age...or die trying.

Hello, and welcome to "The Hohenzollern Empire 3," the third and penultimate stage of my Hohenzollern Roman Empire megacampaign!
In the CKII portion of the story, the (custom) Hohenzollern dynasty, aided by their allies and loyal vassals the Habsburgs and the real Hohenzollerns (designated in this AAR as Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen) conquered, crusaded, and inherited their way to claim the imperial thrones of the Greeks and Germans, but battled for centuries against the barbarian hordes from the east and west for the very survival of Christianity and the new Roman Empire.
In the EUIV segment, the barbarian hordes have been defeated for good, and the Reich progressed into first the Age of Exploration and then into the Enlightenment. Colonies have been established all across the world, and the barbarians have been defeated and crushed in their own homelands. The Reich in 1836 is now the most powerful nation in the world, but that may change in the next hundred years. Will the Maximist movement finally make a move? Will the three Chinese empires unite into one? Will the Triple Alliance defeat its neighbors and retake what it lost over the centuries? Whatever the case, the world in 1936 will be vastly different from the world in 1836.

I will occasionally be updating with dev diaries, or modding journals, as we progress towards 1936, detailing the gameplay changes I have made to each part of the world. I will attempt to limit my own blobbing, and console commands/save reloading/save editing will be used for balance, better immersion, AI advantages, glitches, crashes, and emergency situations.

I hope you'll enjoy the next stage of our journey.

Saints Wilhelmina and Gunhilda, grant us victory in battle.

Yes, I will be exporting to Hearts of Iron 3, but that will be it. I think that'll be the best place to wrap up the story. Also, I've got plans for a certain Kaiserreich AAR in the works...

Finally! The mightiest and proudest empire on Earth returns! So... I think, that it'll be good to see how reactionary regime turns into proper democracy...:p
Of course - I've subbed this AAR.
Aaach, I forgot to ask - what do you do with scripted migration from Europe to North America? Every time when I converted my games to V II I got a terrible population losing - due to migration.

Well, everybody is an absolute monarchy (except Ryukyu, which is a constitutional monarchy), so I don't think there will be any immigration to the Americas. Also, I heard there's a place where you can mod the immigration modifiers/triggers, but I haven't found it yet. So I have been unable to mod the immigration mechanics at all so far.

It begins! May the Reich remain at the top of the world and never change it's ways... or convert to Communism so we can see what happens. :D

Oh, and it is hilarious that Ryukyu is still independent. They are the ultimate underdogs.

Well, this is a reminder that I need to keep reading through the past posts of your AAR. I'll try to stay current on this thread to answer any conversion/modding questions. Feel free to summon me, as well.
Glad you're still following the story! A quick question: do you know where and how to mod immigration mechanics? I heard NWO had modded immigration mechanics but I don't know how they did it.

I did a quick look just before I posted, but didn't find much of anything. There's a constant of some kind in defines.lua, and that's all I found. I had assumed the USA hard coding was in the data files, but I had no luck finding it.

I did some searching on Reddit and on the wiki, apparently the immigration data is in poptypes.txt, so I'll take a look at that. Update will likely come next week after I finish some more custom events and get back from my vacation.

Chapter 162: Census

"The Romans...you know how they are. Always acting like they're the good guys, upholding the status quo...but sometimes you need progress. You need a plot, darn it! There must be conflict. And I think there'll be one very soon. Sadly, it won't be me or my fellow brothers and sisters."
-Archangel Raphael

"Fight the future. You want the truth of what happens to all of you in a hundred years? It's out there. Go get it."
-Wilhelm

"Your Imperial Majesty, here are the census reports, as you asked for," said the official from the Bureau of the Interior, placing a stack of papers on Kaiser Sigismund II's desk.

Sigismund looked at the papers. "Interesting," he muttered, "Why didn't we bring back the census earlier?"

"Well, we didn't have the resources or manpower--" began the bureaucrat.

"That was a rhetorical question, but thank you for your answer," said Sigismund, "Now what do these graphs mean?"
20160320142444_1.jpg

"Well, as you can see here, the vast majority of Romans are Germans, Christians, conservatives, and farmers," said the bureaucrat, "Despite this, the Roman population is quite diverse. You've got shamanists in Mittelafrika, Jews in Arabia, West Africans in Mauretania, Confucians in Indochina and Mittagsland, Sephardim and Norse in Hispania, and a lot of other minorities. Vienna and Berlin are the largest cities in the Reich, followed by Constantinople, Alexandria, Budapest, and Baghdad."

"I'm a bit worried that almost a fifth of all Romans are liberals, though. But anyways..." Sigismund turned to the next sheet of paper.

20160320142502_1.jpg
"Our four brave generals are still with us, even as the Indian and Chinese generals all retired simultaneously yesterday," said the bureaucrat, "They'll serve us well in the next few years. Based on this information the legions are still arguably the best in the world, though our fleets may need some overhauls."

"And how do I read the trade data?"

"I have no idea...let's just skip that for now."
20160320142515_1.jpg

"So I take it that the Concert of Eurasia is holding?" said Sigismund.

"Yes, your Highness, the people over at the Bureau of Foreign Affairs have compiled a list of the eight most powerful nations in the world and the next eleven nations, ranked based on military and industrial strength. Our sphere of influence stretches around the world, and the Kingdom of Kanata are our allies in the Eimericas, helping to keep the Jin and Fox in check."

"Why is the Alliance still a Great Power? And why does it have the Arapaho tribe in its sphere of influence? Didn't the Fox annex the Arapaho some time ago?"

"I'll make a note to tell the Foreign Minister that."
20160320142527_1.jpg

"On to politics, sir," said the bureaucrat. "Our schools and safety regulations are the best in the world, and we are one of a handful of nations that have banned slavery. Romans can hold public meetings, as long as they do not advocate for revolution. The Imperial Diet is currently dominated by your family members, though there are other factions seeking to gain your favor, including the German and Greek dynatoi. Our policies and values of equality so far are preventing the Maximists from making moves, but we must be careful in dealing with them. Bear in mind that they have a liberal-leaning faction in the Diet, and some Habsburgs and Hohenzollern-Sigmaringens have Maximist and liberal sympathies.
20160320142538_1.jpg
"And to finish it up, Your Imperial Majesty, here is last year's budget and a list of our factories. For some reason the Bureau of Finances has taken out loans from the AOG, Socotra, Hanseatic League, and itself. You should repay them soon. And the Bureau has projected that the current tax rates won't be enough to maintain our expenses, so you should either raise tax rates or decrease funding in several areas. Perhaps finance more factories to balance out the costs?"

20160320142622_1.jpg

"Thank you for your time," said Sigismund, "I shall take your advice into consideration for drafting up the new budget. You may go now."

The bureaucrat turned to leave the room, but at that moment the doors flew open, revealing a servant--holding a kitchen knife. The servant blinked, and his eyes became completely pitch black.

It was a demon, Sigismund realized.

By the time he had finished formulating the thought, the demon had already slashed the bureaucrat's throat and was advancing on the Kaiser. Remembering his Inquisition training, however limited it was because of budget cuts, he grabbed a vial of holy water which he always kept on his desk and flung it at the demon.

The glass shattered against its head, and the demon screamed, its skin burning away where the holy water made contact.

Sigismund chanted an exorcism liturgy in Greek as he reached for his Kurdish anti-demon knife. The demon fell to his knees and began thrashing around, black smoke foaming in his mouth.

"You can't stop us," said the demon, "We are many. With the angels in isolation in Heaven, there's nothing stopping MacLeod and us from rampaging across Earth and claiming as many souls as possible!"

"In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, begone, servant of Lucifer!" shouted the Kaiser, and black smoke--the demon's true form--erupted from the servant's mouth.

Sigismund advanced quickly, and before the smoke had fully escaped from the servant's body, he placed the knife over the man's mouth, directly in the path of the smoke. As the smoke billowed out of the mouth, it hit the knife, giving off sparks of red energy which grew in intensity with time. Eventually, no more smoke emerged from the servant's mouth, and what had escaped sank the the floor, coalescing in a single spot near the fomerly possessed man. Sigismund walked over and plunged the knife into the middle of the smoke cloud, and it dissolved into fine particles of sulfur.

"Your Highness!" shouted the Varangians. "We ran up here as quickly as we could! Are you in need of assistance?"

"Yes, help me take out the body and take this man to the nearest chapel," said Sigismund, "He was possessed by a demon."

The lead Varangian nodded. "As you wish, my lord."

The Varangians picked up the bureaucrat's remains and helped the servant to his feet. As they turned to leave, Sigismund said, "One more thing."

The lead Varangian turned.

"Get them to stop mothballing the Inquisition."

"Yes, sir." The Varangians left the room.

Inquisition Headquaters, Berlin

Theodoros Shah Mukhtar threw open the doors to his ancestor's office. Everything was where he had left it several days ago. On the desk lay anti-angel weapons and books on angels and their weaknesses. Theodoros sat down in the chair and put away the books and weapons. He took out a book titled "How to Fight Demons" and began writing down orders to mobilize the thousands of Inquisitors who had been discharged from service over the years.

"So the Inquisition is back, huh?" he muttered. "I guess nobody expected that."

No one expects the Spanish Roman Inquisition!

Looks like the Reich is going to have to move quickly to balance the budget. That's one nasty deficit.

As always in Vicky II you begin with vast deficit and limited way to prevent it. But - what are decisions, which you can choose currently, as Romisches Kaiser?

There are two prestige-giving decisions that I can take, but they won't do much else. One is the German Walhalla decision and the other is an Italian "Royal Order" decision.

Well, the deficit is quite nasty, but you're also the richest nation in the world. It won't do to let it stay like that, but you're not in desperate need to change things either.
