This is the journal for the HLA Airport build. For more of my full city build you can visit my artwork stream on steam. https://steamcommunity.com/id/nickvet419/images/

Basic layout is complete. Had to move the river along the railway, flattened, and cleared the land. Laid out the first runway and taxiway and then started working on the terminal positioning and connections. Then installed the second runway. Put in some holding aprons and a small pond for runway rian collection.

The map is "Cedar Lake" http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=631860292&searchtext=

Here is what the area looked like before anything was built. Rotated clockwise 90 deg from the pic above.

Finished off the terminal buildings. Terminal 1 at the top is an edited vanilla international, Airlines routes includes Skylines and Cimair from the better planes pack, it also houses the private aviation pad and admin offices. Terminal 2 in the center center houses CS airlines as a main hub. It also is the location of the main baggage security handling area. Terminal 3 on the right is the international terminal and houses Transcon Airlines. It features 5 large plane stands. It has a separate entrance with a double decker road. Also attached in between T2 and T3 is a small regional pad for the local hoppers. Roads accessing the terminals are a Taxi lane, a bus lane, and a general traffic lane. The bus and taxi lane merge in the lower level of T3.

Also what you see added here are the service hangars and fuel area on the left.

Here is the flow diagram. you will see that the planes will land via the top runway 68R and takeoff via the bottom runway 89R. Different terminal areas are separated when enter the holding pads after landing and before takeoff.

The service hangar also houses a fire training area. and yes, it is built right next to the fuel depot but separated by a big brick wall for safety.

The service area is accessed by workers through a back entrance to the airport. There is also staff parking available for the main terminals.

The airport now has a loop road that connects directly to the freeway. Also added some main parking areas, A monorail from the city, and a cargo hub, and a metro system that services the terminals. Planes can also now land via runway 89R so they can easily access the cargo hub. Not visible in the overview, but the taxiways were also named and marked.

The cargo hub houses KLM, UPS, DHL, and FedEx. This area has a separate entrance from the main airport. There are 2 security checkpoints entering the secure airport grounds. The checkpoint at the far end comes off the access road the leads to the service hangars. The terminal metro service garage is also housed in this area on the bottom right. A new taxiway was also added to service this area.

The freeway entrance also has an airport code sign. HLA code for "Highland International airport". I have a tendency of letting the game name places when the area is zoned.

Parking areas are a paid feature if you want to use them. This one has underground walkways to T1 so you dont have risk your life crossing traffic and a monorail station that has express service to downtown for those who don't like city traffic. Also notice the new taxi holding area.

ps.. I just realised I need make a cellphone lot somewhere....

The airport runways were extended because big planes look better using big runways and a more realistic feature. The plane flow is still the same as before. The canal and railway had to be pushed further back and the service hangars went a layout redesign to better accommodate the longer runways.

Here is a closeup of the new service hangar layout. The access road now has to cross a taxiway. I might change that to a tunnel, but for now vehicles will have to wait until plane traffic is clear to cross.

If you were wondering how you can get exclusive airline traffic at your airport, look no further. Here is the route map for airline and ground traffic at HLA. This also shows you better the plane flow from different terminal areas. The white lines are 3 ground support routes using the "Airport Service Vehicle Pack "Functional Hack" by vasimr22

    5C5F2CDE8DDD2ED8E5692F626E983831E7A4DACD

For exclusive airlines you'll also need another airport to connect to. I like to put mine on the far edge of the map. Careful not to put them too close to the outside plane connections as planes may end infinite circle loop above the airport. I have two of these border airports, one for cargo planes, and one for passenger planes.

ps. I also have exclusive bus and train routes that service outside connections as seen on the right.

For my outside passenger airport I create foot traffic by using a train connections. Check out my guide here http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1210406703

The rental car facility is accessed through the parking entrance. You obviously can get you parking voucher validated by the rental agents. The facility has a vehicle pickup area, dropoff and inspection area, storage garage, and storage lot.

    6BCC0C8CDA0A3AE0EB9978650E6AF458C9508060

Travelers who didn't bring there pocket-cars along are brought via airport shuttle to the pickup area where they can view and pick out a car to rent. After an agent sells a rental, a service tech will park a new vehicle in the pickup viewing area from the storage lot. Each morning, or when a line type is depleted, a new line will be brought from the storage garage to the storage lot.
Enterprise and Hertz are your main vendors at this airport, but they also provide vehicles for the other rental agencies listed on the garage.

    8B950110B8A98120070FA7446EAEB95DA3CEBE01

When a vehicle is returned, it is thoroughly inspected, refueled, and cleaned. It is then returned to the garage. Passengers are given a receipt and can take the free shuttle back to the terminal.

    8B9E3BF561565C3C12103CF7480BE114EAD8E7B0

The mini car wash stations are great for return service. With my road design, you might even see a cars using them. ;-)

    081D2E60D823BC7FBDCFC420116D4E5C8470DF9F

To create a little more traffic in the area and to make the garage more functional, I added a road through it with a taxi depot. The depot uses the uber cars by ninjanoobslayer as they look more like rental type cars.

Long-term parking is a necessity for your travelers. We opted for a contract with Park 'N Fly by KingLeno. It uses the same entrance as the main parking area but by using this lot you can pay your parking voucher at the pay stations for a long-term Park 'N Fly discounted price. It also has shuttle service to take you to and from your terminal of choice.

Needed just a bit more.. Some self sufficient power generation and a helipad, located on the bottom left. I'd say the Airport is quite complete now, but if you think I missed anything or have any new ideas, let me know.

The power generator is necessary for running a self-sufficient airport, but it also can sell excess power back the grid for some proffit.

This is typically to service the wealthy and business class, but it also dabbles as a coast guard station. The heliport is technically a separate facility, but it also has service access to the main airport via the service road. This allows fuel, catering, and limo service to the main airport.

The heliport also has its own terminal building. The main entrance features the Monster Bird Helicopter Park.

Some updates have been made to the airport since it was finished.
-The canal that was rerouted around the airport was removed and no longer connects the two rivers.
-A tunnel was added under the taxiway that leads to the maintenance hangars. .
-Some airport road striping was added.
-Blast shoulders were added to the runways and taxiways.
-Additional cargo loading areas were added to comply with industry standards

To reduce the need for vehicle taxiway crossings, a tunnel was installed.

This also shows a closer view of the blast shoulders that were installed.

It also shows the new airport road markings.
